What would you ask Alex Davy?

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Where is/are my Assault Gunboat expansion(s)?

I imagine that Alex is going to try to be tight-lipped about a lot of future stuff, so it's probably useless to ask him any of that.

You might want to ask him process questions, such as:

  • How do you go about deciding what to fix, and how does that play into the 18-month planning schedule?

Regarding the creation of the Raider and the collaboration with Lucasfilm:

Ooh along those lines, and I've seen it pop up in these forums

"Is the Raider the same class as Tarkin's private vessel? (I think the Carrion Spike is the name)"

Or perhaps more generically,

"Will the raider be showing up in other, non-FFG material?"

Can I touch your hair?

Why haven't you made any prequel/clone wars ships for the game? And I want a better reason then the "era it's set in". They already have old ships in the game (z-95, firespray, y-wing, falcon) as well as ships past the era (e-wing). The EU has already established that several prequel/clone wars ships are in use during the game's "era" so give a better reason.

It's also not an issue of ships not filling any roles, as previous discussions about it have already established that several could have unique roles/abilities that are not in play right now.

I think the real reason is they don't like those movies/tv shows and/or are worried that customers who hate them won't buy the ships, even though that hasn't been the case yet for any EU ships that were obscure.

Not to put to fine a point on this but the truth is, Disney doesn't like the prequel movies. Once they officially took over they put the kibosh on just about everything that isn't directly related to the OT time frame. This includes the selective removal of the EU. What is interesting though is that all of the ships available (and many of the pilots) are referenced from the Star Wars video games NOT the books. This includes the canceled Rogue Squadron games (there were two in development) as well as sequel games (I saw concepts for at least one game but I heard it was going to be a new series) to X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter that got canned in the early 2000's in favor of supporting the new movies.

For whatever reason the guys at FFG are finding solid material from the games and Disney is supporting them. I can't say I blame them for dropping support to the prequel movies, they are a creative morass.

Disney hates the prequels? Have you watched Rebels? It's loaded with references and stuff to the prequel era. The man behind the show, Dave Filoni, (who was also the man bechind TCW), doesn't differentiate between Trilogies. It's all Star Wars.

I assumed Disney canned TCW because it was a Cartoon Network show. Probably some licensing problems or something.

I don't think they hate the prequels, they're just trying to win back, or re-interest fans who were put off by that stuff.

I pictured the Carrion Spike to look like this. I think they reference this ship, or episode of TCW in the book. For reference the episode is called Cat and Mouse. S2 E16

I imagine that Alex is going to try to be tight-lipped about a lot of future stuff, so it's probably useless to ask him any of that.

He might be willing to talk about some of their plans in a vague way, the way he and Frank did for Team Covenant at GenCon. He's excited about that stuff, and he loves the game, so he'd probably be happy to talk about it…

if he didn't need to be very careful about making promises he can't keep or giving hints about stuff that could easily change before it hits the press-release stage.

So specific, content-focused questions like "what are you doing about ordnance?" are likely to be met with polite non-answers (and you risk not getting called on again). "Why do you think ordnance doesn't see a lot of competitive play?", on the other hand, is a much better question, because it gives him room to talk about his opinions and design philosophy without talking about specific game elements.

Following up more on Mikael's comment, asking "what else is on the list of things to be fixed?" is much less likely to get an interesting answer than "how do you decide what should be fixed and what should be left alone?"

Will the tie bomber and/or the defender be getting some attention this year?

My question:

I have been thinking about making ordnance (torpedos and missiles) ignore shields. What effect do you see this having on the game? Ordnance is not often considered due to being too unreliable. Could this help with that?

How much influence does they forum community actually have in your design decisions? How much of what OS posted here gets filtered up to you?

I'd say pretty strong, considering how many user's ideas have magically come true. Biggest being a negative point card for the a-wing, and the "free" system slot for the advanced.

I'd like to know for sure though...see how much of the smug around here is actually warranted. That and it would be good to know so we all have a better idea of how much our ideas and opinions are utilized.

We know he at least checks out the repaints, he's mention either Millennium Falsehood or Rodent Mastermind in a recent podcast.

But yeah, I can help but see some of my homebrew elements showing up in S&V, which is cool and I wont have to but Action Fleet ships off ebay to play them.

Another vote for a tactful Ordnance question, as Vorpal suggests.

BTW, I think Frank is the one mainly working on Epic now, so Alex might not be as willing to answer those questions. The guys working on the RPGs tend to skirt questions regarding another writer or team's project, so I'd imaging it might be the same in this case.

What's your favorite ship in the game?
Also What is a list you enjoy flying?

It's also featured heavily in the new book, Tarkin.

Ask him what his favourite colour is.

I'd ask him if he wants olives on his sandwich .. 4 years working at Subways will leave that scar on you.

In seriousness, I really want to stress the importance of 'how' you ask the question as opposed to asking a black and white question. Vorpal and Michael's posts should be highly regarded.

In addition to their points you are more likely to get a slip of interesting information from a generic question than you are a direct one. For example, if my wife asked where I keep my 'adult material' my shields would go up and I'd deny having any. Should she engage in a conversation about how bad she is at usa computer, and then ask where I'd hide the naughty photos we took last week .. I'd probably slip up and tell her.

Ask him if he read this forum topic.

Given the capital, snub and ground elements in their SW portfolio; will FFG look to do a tiered EPIC level campaign which incorporates all three systems?

Will there be a forthcoming update to the Tourney rules to address the inclusion/exclusion of the debris fields for the SC & Regional events?

Please don't ask anyone on the team where they keep their naughty photos.

More substantive questions:

What concepts have they tried to make work and just couldn't?

What releases were used in the most unexpected ways?

And finally:

Ordinance: why do they think Ordinance sees so little competitive play, do they think that's a problem, and how will they address it?

Those are all awesome questions id love to hear an answer to

What are some examples of player behaviors that surprised you in a positive way?

In an interview, during Worlds if I recall correctly, I got the impression that Alex had moved on to Armada and left the rudder to Frank.

Are you back on the X-Wing team again or just side-kickin' when your skills are needed?

What releases were used in the most unexpected ways?

How much design time is spent on new concepts for new ships, vs new concepts for older ships?

Why do you think ordnance doesn't see a lot of competitive play?

how do you decide what should be fixed and what should be left alone?

Going through the thread with scrutiny I ended up with the above, especially Vorpal´s have a high chance of elaborate, enthousiastic, and, above all, interesting answers (if you read this Davy, no pressure! ;) )

He said specifically that he wasn't working X-Wing much anymore as he has been diverted to Armada.

It's interesting that everyone missed that detail.

Ask if fantasy flight will be signing Vic Davis.
