What would you ask Alex Davy?

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Hi guys.

The owner of my awesome FLGS Paradox in Fargo ND told me that for our store championship in Fubruary Alex Davy (one of the lead designers) is going to be there!

Alex is a Fargo native so he'll be around or something. I don't actually know the details of how they arranged it all, but during or after the store champion tournament he's going to be doing a little Q&A.

I'll be doing my best to cover the Q&A session. I don't really have much in the way of recording devices besides my phone, but in any case I'll be keeping notes of everything as well.

We'll be discussing it on The Jodo Cast afterwards, and I'll probably write up an article about it too.

I don't wanna be asking all the questions at the thing, but I'll do my best to get some in.

What questions would you ask if you could be there? I'll pick some of your responses and do my best to ask them to Alex during the event!

I'm 90% this is during our store championship in Februrary. Otherwise it'd be at this big local flavor tournament Paradox has cooked up in a couple of weeks. Either way, i'll do my best to ask your questions!

"How yo hair look so good?" :)

Seriously, I wouldn't ask him too much of anything, but I would thank him a bunch of times for his hard work.

p.s. Loving the Jodo Cast. More jizz-wailing discussion though please, yeah?

why did you create cards like ACD and C3P0 and Yssane?

What are your plans for X-Wing EPIC?

:)

Why haven't you made any prequel/clone wars ships for the game? And I want a better reason then the "era it's set in". They already have old ships in the game (z-95, firespray, y-wing, falcon) as well as ships past the era (e-wing). The EU has already established that several prequel/clone wars ships are in use during the game's "era" so give a better reason.

It's also not an issue of ships not filling any roles, as previous discussions about it have already established that several could have unique roles/abilities that are not in play right now.

I think the real reason is they don't like those movies/tv shows and/or are worried that customers who hate them won't buy the ships, even though that hasn't been the case yet for any EU ships that were obscure.

Where do you see the game of X-Wing in 5 years?

P.S. Really looking forward to listening to that one on your show!

Boo!

:P

Ask about EPIC... cause people care about that.

How much influence does they forum community actually have in your design decisions? How much of what OS posted here gets filtered up to you?

Fair point...with Armada coming where will that leave Epic in FFGs plans for X-Wing? Will Epic tournament play ever be something we would see and if so, will that also be supported like the do standard games? Will there ever be an Epic World Championship?

I'd say pretty strong, considering how many user's ideas have magically come true. Biggest being a negative point card for the a-wing, and the "free" system slot for the advanced.

Probably he doesn't wish to answer these, but still:

- are we going to get a 4th faction?

- are we going to get Cloud Cars?

- are we going to get more repaints / aces packs?

:-)

- how far before release do they design an expansion?

- how long does it take to play-test new designs?

- how much of the idea's survive play-testing?

Who's your replacement (since you are no longer working on X-Wing)?

Will the upgraded X-wings from Episode VII be showing up in some way (title, new ship, etc.)?

Are Clone Wars and/or Rebels ships available to FFG?

What are your plans for X-Wing EPIC?

And this.

Ask them if they are secretly OT supremacists.

Seconding the question about his hair. He's got some pretty epic hair. Please do ask about his hair.

More substantive questions:

What concepts have they tried to make work and just couldn't?

What releases were used in the most unexpected ways?

What did you learn while working on Armada that got brought back into X-Wing (and vice versa)

How much design time is spent on new concepts for new ships, vs new concepts for older ships?

And finally:

Ordinance: why do they think Ordinance sees so little competitive play, do they think that's a problem, and how will they address it?

Tactfully, we could ask them what parts of the Clone Wars and Rebels Cartoons caught their imaginations. Gets the same information to us, but doesn't put anyone on the defensive. And asking people about what they love is more fun than asking people what they hate. :)

Ordinance: why do they think Ordinance sees so little competitive play, do they think that's a problem, and how will they address it?

That's one I'd like to see answered as well.

As far as the prequel stuff... James said the same thing when X-Wing first came out, so did Christian Petersen in one of the GenCon interviews, so it's not really up to Alex of Frank.

I feel like ordinance has been addressed already. Between munitions failsafe, and cheaper options lately, there's been some help at least.

I would ask if thought has been given to create a campaign rule set that features Armada, X-wing and Imperial Assault (or whatever the new board game is)?

Not to put to fine a point on this but the truth is, Disney doesn't like the prequel movies. Once they officially took over they put the kibosh on just about everything that isn't directly related to the OT time frame. This includes the selective removal of the EU. What is interesting though is that all of the ships available (and many of the pilots) are referenced from the Star Wars video games NOT the books. This includes the canceled Rogue Squadron games (there were two in development) as well as sequel games (I saw concepts for at least one game but I heard it was going to be a new series) to X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter that got canned in the early 2000's in favor of supporting the new movies.

For whatever reason the guys at FFG are finding solid material from the games and Disney is supporting them. I can't say I blame them for dropping support to the prequel movies, they are a creative morass.

Can I be a playtester?

Disney/LFL doesn't hate the PT. They are just putting their years of marketing experience to work. They are shifting the focus onto the OT because ramping up the OT nostalgia can only be good for Episode VII. Besides, from what I've heard, the Clone Wars was going to have issues anyway due to Cartoon Network's shifting focus. Just be glad that Cartoon Network treated it better than Beware the Batman. When it is time for them to profit off the PT, you can bet that they will.

Do you have any plans/have you considered releasing card only expansions for the game? (re-vamped damage deck, pilot packs, pilots in alternate ships ect.)

I think one of the issues with the era is that there is a bit of a faction shakeup with those ships and that might be the point about the "era" issues. Even though they've released ships from the EU and from the past, most of those ships have been easily identifiable with the faction they are tied to and were prominent features of Episodes 4-6, the lone exception being the Firespray, which always felt odd as solely an Empire ship but now has a better home.

Regarding the creation of the Raider and the collaboration with Lucasfilm:

Was this a one-off creation specifically for the game or can we expect or can we expect an equally excellent Scum huge ship?

I am excited to see the Raider (even as a Rebel player primarily) because it shows a vested interest in this game from the creative minds at FFG and LFL/Disney. I would however, like to see a Scum huge that is not just a Hutt Space Sail Barge or repurposed Action IV transport. In all honesty I would rather see the Action IV enter on the Imperial team as the Suprosa.

Second question is:

Are there plans to release FFG acrylic tokens, rulers, and movement templates as products for purchase? Maybe the possibility of reviving the cancelled Starfield Game mats?

I'd like to know for sure though...see how much of the smug around here is actually warranted. That and it would be good to know so we all have a better idea of how much our ideas and opinions are utilized.
