i've painted all my rebels orange, and all my imperials red (royal guard for life).
I was thinking yellow, as the middle ground between red and orange, but I'm not sold on it yet.
A swampy green was also on my mind, but another player in my area has already done that, so I'm not married to it.
I like green, tan, and gray for Scum.
now i'm thinking a blue color. wildly different.
If Imperial ships are clean, uniform, and intimidating, Rebel ships a rougher mix of worn military w/exhausted maintenance crews, then I see Scum ships as a combination of "junkyard" and "flashy." Some are shiny badass hot rods, some are rusted-up heaps from Road Warrior.

They're Scum, they personalize everything. Some will be factory gray, others will be red and shiny, and yet others will be garish color mashups.
I agree. I think a lot of the appeal of S&V is its hodgepodge...ness, and I think a paint scheme should reflect that.
One trick I've heard for something similar was to basecoat everything in brown; at the end, it looks worn, and that brownish element helps to tie them all together. But if you're dead-set on a specific color, I would say something in the yellow to brown to bronze range; these are battered old junkers, not sleek new Imperial ships.

I'm personally doing an entire Black Sun theme for at least one of every ship in Scum minus the IG-2000 which I might leave alone. It should be easy enough to pull off! The Firespray is coming along nicely and I was thinking of having my second HWK be very magpie inspired. The ship I feel that will give me the most trouble is the M3-A, but I've been wrong before.

I don't think you want uniformity instead go for flames on one bright stripes on another's wings Tec.
They arnt generally a military organization so each ship can be personalized.
Basically go nuts.
