Lets see your FIRESPRAYS

By Gadge, in X-Wing

I stumbled onto a second Firespray over Christmas break. Since I don't want two Boba Fetts flying around, I repainted one with the generic Bounty Hunter hull pattern. I went with a muted color scheme so it would fit better with ordinary Imperial ships. I also added a pair of scratchbuild Heavy Laser Cannons, because why not?

Here's my Kath Scarlet repaint.

The Firespray is the first X-Wing model that i've tried to repaint. I went with green because it's my favourite colour and i'm pretty pleased with the overall finish. I've written a blog post about how I went about painting the Firespray here.

And one more. I added a heavy laser on the side since I normally add one when playing Firesprays. I also painted the base with a star field.

I tried my hand at painting the Andrasta last night.

I'm fairly happy with it but I may strip it clean and try again since I think I can do better.

Not very bobalicious - just a generic paint scheme as I normally fly a "Bounty Hunter" + "Recon Specialist" ingame:

Question for those of you who've done a Kath. How do you wash the mini and keep the white white? Every time I wash something it darkens significantly and/or it pools up and I'm left with an ink ring. Am I going too fast? Should I be doing the whole model at once?

Let me recommend doing an oil wash instead of ink.

The pros are:

- The oil takes a lot of time to dry so you have room for error fixing

- The wash does not darken the overall model

- No pooling or ink rings

The cons are:

- Your female room mate will hate it due to the smell of the turpenoid ;-)

I followed this simple tutorial and the results are great:

.A trick I learned with water based Ink/Glaze washes was to add a tiny amount of dish washing liquid to the Ink/Glaze you are using, along with watering the Ink Glaze down a bit if going over much lighter colours.

The dishwashing liquid helps break the surface tension of the fluid which help it to run off the flat areas & pool in the recesses.

Great tip, I've heard this before, just haven't tried it out yet. When I finally do my own Kath repaint, I'll be doing that for sure

Nice blending on that yellow, sir. Well done.

Was planning to turn it into Kath's, but wasn't sure of how the whole pattern looked, so instead used similar colours in a different fashion. Now, I think Kath's Firespray with similar weathering could look great.. well, there may well follow a second Firespray at some point.
