Missing Characters in 4th Edition

By JediKnightAmoeba, in Talisman

So, I was shocked to discover, we have 61 characters so far to choose when playing! But we are missing some obvious choices and races from previous editions that I know some of us would love to have!!! Let's look at this a little further..........
The 61 we have:

What are we missing? Here is a short list from previous editions and some others..... Some, we may have a similar character but others are a glaring absence.
Archaeologist
Astronaut
Astronomer
Astropath
Barbarian
Beastman
Black Orc
Centaur
Chainsaw Warrior
Chaos Dwarf
Chaos Sorcerer
Chaos Warrior
Cyborg
Dark Elf
Goblin Fanatic
Halfling
High Elf
Hobgoblin
Inquisitor
Martial Artist
Ninja

Witch Doctor
Witch Elf
Wood Elf
Zulu

What are those characters that we really want to see added to the game? Will their abilities be different from the choices we already have? There are some that I would really like to see; I would like them to be official but it looks to me like that may never happen since they have kept everything relatively generic in 4th edition. Loudo put up some nice characters for us to peruse and I really enjoy them. Maybe, making our own fan-made characters is the way to go for now. So I ask, What absent characters pang your heart?

For me the characters we have yet to see that I really miss are: Skaven, Black Orc, Goblin, High Elf, Dark Elf(Drow), Pirate, Ninja, Beastmen, and a Chaos Warrior. If anyone would like to help "create" these characters so we could make them in Strange Eons that would be awesome! Our group made Characters but based them solely off previous editions so they are pretty basic. What are some ideas for special abilities, artwork, starting stats, etc? Why? I went into strange eons to make a High Elf and ended up typing up a special ability "If another player wins the game, roll a d6. On a 4+ you win the game instead." Clearly I am biased and should not be making these decisions! :-D

I would like to see the Timescape characters recreated, to work with the great Timescape expansion homebrew

Also I loved the Pirate, so seeing the swashbuckler recreated would be great

Several of these characters are obviously GW and Warhammer related, so I don't think we are going to see them in this edition:

Beastman
Black Orc
Chaos Dwarf
Chaos Sorcerer
Chaos Warrior
Dark Elf
Goblin Fanatic
High Elf
Skaven
Warrior of Chaos
Witch Elf

Then, there are the Timescape characters, both WH40k related and not, which we're probably not going to see unless Timescape is done again (which I sincerely doubt and don't hope for):

Archaeologist
Astronaut
Astropath
Chainsaw Warrior
Cyborg
Scientist
Space Marine
Space Pirate
Then, there are the characters that belong to cultures and settings different from the European Middle-Age, which could be introduced in a thematic expansion but would feel out of place if just thrown in the mix:
Martial Artist
Ninja
Samurai

Saracen

Zulu

Many of the following could have been ok within the Woodland Expansion, but they were not introduced so I think we shall not see them if not in a "character pack":

Centaur
Ranger (somehow covered by the Scout)
Satyr (Leywalker is actually a Satyr character)
Shaman
Wardancer (Totem Warrior does fill the spot though, even though it's not the same character)
Witch Doctor
Wood Elf
Woodsman
This is what remains:

Astronomer
Barbarian
Halfling
Hobgoblin
Inquisitor
Orc
Pilgrim
Pirate
Soldier

Of these ones, I think the Barbarian and the Halfling are the 2 iconic fantasy characters I miss the most. I would also like to see a Pirate and an Inquisitor. The others don't bother me too much.

Spot on with the Halfling. The Halfling definitely needs a spot in the character deck. I think his card needs to incorporate the use of food and drink.

Of the older editions I've only played 2nd edition base game as that's the only thing translated into Swedish, hence I've no idea what abilities older characters have. But an orc with bloodlust would be nice. "Discard 1 life to gain 3 extra strength for 1 battle".

Otherwise astronomer sounds interesting. But we already have gypsy working with events. But perhaps we can find another event ability to use for him.

Pirate and Ninja are coming to Talisman Digital soon, so they should do at a push. I'll be putting them on the site as home-brews for download.

Pirate.

Yep. Pirate.

Someone did a poll here a few months back but it didn't go over well in its function, so I redid the poll here: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1186770/character-wanted-and-eliminated

I like the poll but a few of the results are surprising. Why is everyone opposed to the Skaven? And I would like all the Timescape characters to come back! :-)

Yeah I am a Timescape fan too.

Could someone link me where I could find a detailled description of all these characters?

The Saracen have its spot taken by the warlord.

Timescape - consign to the space dustbin!

I would love to see Barbarian, Ninja, Orc and Pirate characters myself. Ninja could be reworded to avoid using the Japanese word, maybe it could be called Shadow Warrior or something and still be a ninja in every sense of the word.

We also have 10 more characters from the Digital Edition: Exorcist, Courtesan, Devil's Minion, Genie, Martyr, Gambler, Black Witch, Apprentice Mage... and now the Ninja and Pirate!

Bring back the Inquisitor in all his fine red robes.

One of my favourite 2nd edition (Dungeon expansion) characters with his ability to imprison people for Heresey

I never win though, as the other characters gang up on me for my "holier than thou" attitide and putting everyone in the clink

:)

I will patiently wait for FFG to bring back all or most of these characters, but I do, so, fancy a Pirate! (okay, maybe that didn't sound right, but you get it)

I've been thinking for some time that this might be a future pod. What do you think?

I don't know about other games, but right now, all Talisman POD were without minis.

That said, we might be luckier with a small expansion character wise if any more are in the works, only the power that be and some "in the know" people know the roadmap for future release of expansion for Talisman and this is probably tentative and closely relative to sales figures versus production cost.

Now let's hope Jon New keep up the good work, and see if we get something for the next holiday or earlier :D

Cheers
