I like throwing an engine upgrade on the decimator. It's really fun to fly like an interceptor, especially against an HLC dash. If you fly just in circles, you're dead. You've got to be unpredictable with a 0 agility ship. If not, I'm going to block you and then focus down to kill. Sure, a 360 turret means you rarely have to worry about being able to shoot, but low agility and a large base means you really need to make sure no one else can shoot at you, which is where fancy flying comes in.
Decimator Dullness( or how I stopped worrying and learned to fly in circles)
If you watch some very high-level games involving large ships (Worlds final, some of the final TCO games etc) you do see some key moves being made that change the outcome of the games. Paul Heaver made a very nice run with the Falcon through the middle of the board in the final of Worlds. Dallas Parker made a clever move with Kenkirk against Sideslip in the final of TCO where he charged into the middle of the board into an obstacle to catch Sideslip in a 2vs1 situation.
So, there are potential moments of brilliance flying large ships, although you can get pretty far by simply playing them safe and fly in circles.
At least if it's circling you can't complain that it's owner is using self-blocking maneuvers to keep it in one place.
Flying them predictably may be easy but were things get interesting is when the unexpected breakout occurs.
I don't think the OP literally flies in circles, choosing the exact same maneuver round after round. But these ship do tend to fly around the board; it helps them do what they do. Normally, that would bug me a lot, seeing as how I stubbornly clung to TIE interceptors all last tournament season. So I caved and decided to try Decimator and I'm winning. I'm actually winning again!
...and I like it!
there was a suggestion in another thread I found helpful for keeping Desi on her stand. saran wrap or scotch tape over the peg befor inserting into the socket, then trim off the excess.
Worked great for me, now Loch Desi is good to go.
Try the Rear Admiral with predator and engine upgrade (i like to add Mara too). Fly it like an interceptor, keeping it out of firing arcs. Once you see how far a large base ship with boost can move, you'll never fly it the same.
RAC with predator is perfect for this. You can boost every turn and still get serious dice modification. Add Mara and rebel captive for control, Isarde for some extra survivability and you're golden
Fly the rear admiral with ptl, engine upgrade and Izard. Being able to boost in the combat phase after everyone is set up opens up some really interesting options and makes it legit to fly through the middle of everything. I find it fun at any rate.
So I had my first few games with my new Decimator the other night and my first impression was " God what a dull experience".
I tried Rear Admiral Cheerio, with Issard and determination alongside a couple of Ties and a shuttle, won hands down twice with this build, then swapped sides and I scraped a win against the same list.
In every game the Decimator moved forward a couple of times and then simply flew around in circles for the entirety of the game, taking out whatever it fired at, in the past 12 months I don't think I have been more dissapointed with a new ship. It was the least interesting three games of X wing I have ever played.
Is this the case with all turreted ships? Is there more interesting builds then this?(I have been told Oicunn can be fun) I am being unfair to the big grey monster?
On a side note, it also doesn't help the X wing experience when you have to keep taking the **** thing of its base all the time, between hitting other ships and not staying in place on the stand, it spent most of its 12 dozen circles as just a plastic flying stand. Now I come to think of it a tournament I was at a few weeks ago had several tables of circling plastic pegs of doom, very cinematic.
Seems like I have a right downer on the new kid on the Imperial block.
I've only had a few games so far, and it certainly is a different beast to my usual interceptors and Defenders and phantoms.
That said, I like to be agressive and fly it straight down the enemies throat. That lovely dauntless title lets you be pleasingly psychotic.
It's a fun and as involving as you want it to be.
But the peg issue is annoying.

Maybe this is a lot of my problem, I started playing this game with interceptors and have always had a fondness for the dodgy little tykes, also A wings, even losing games with these types of ships I think I and my opponent have always enjoyed them.
I'm a big fan of the ship. Having 3 slots for crew gives you a LOT of options. It's really the upgrade slots that make the ship fun, imo. Rebel Captive on a turret? THAT itself is a blast.
Also, Oicunn and RAC have pretty solid, fun abilities. Crits in general are fun, and getting to dish out crits ALL the time is great for Chirey. And for Oicunn, it's really a blast to see your opponent squirm as he tries to avoid his Soontir Fel being rammed into for 1/3 of his HP. Also really fun to make your opponent think twice about using that 1hp Tie Fighter to deny actions to Oicunn. Changes up some of the game play quite a bit.
