Decimator Dullness( or how I stopped worrying and learned to fly in circles)

By Ashley, in X-Wing

So I had my first few games with my new Decimator the other night and my first impression was " God what a dull experience".

I tried Rear Admiral Cheerio, with Issard and determination alongside a couple of Ties and a shuttle, won hands down twice with this build, then swapped sides and I scraped a win against the same list.

In every game the Decimator moved forward a couple of times and then simply flew around in circles for the entirety of the game, taking out whatever it fired at, in the past 12 months I don't think I have been more dissapointed with a new ship. It was the least interesting three games of X wing I have ever played.

Is this the case with all turreted ships? Is there more interesting builds then this?(I have been told Oicunn can be fun) I am being unfair to the big grey monster?

On a side note, it also doesn't help the X wing experience when you have to keep taking the **** thing of its base all the time, between hitting other ships and not staying in place on the stand, it spent most of its 12 dozen circles as just a plastic flying stand. Now I come to think of it a tournament I was at a few weeks ago had several tables of circling plastic pegs of doom, very cinematic.

Seems like I have a right downer on the new kid on the Imperial block.

Oicunn only adds a few dashes when you try to ram a ship, but like all turreted ships he too flies in circles a lot...

... and yes from y-wing to yt-2400, all turreted ships only fly circles if you let them

as for the stands issue: unlike the Lambda you can remove one or both pips with Decimator, so it can pass under ships on two pips (or like I do it, only use on pip with small ships, so they can pass under the Decimator)

If you are the kind of person who like outmaneuvering your opponent with intricate and swirling dogfights then I can certainly see why a turreted ship would be boring. I on the other hand love Oicunn and his ramming ability, it gives me the opportunity to yell 'RAMMING SPEED!' every time I manage to use his ability. :D

I mount mine on four pegs so it can look down on all the other ships.

Use a huge ship peg and base with the decimator a time or two and it will manipulate the female end of the peg enough that the peg for the decimator will fit better

Flying in circles? You make a compelling case Ashey, where do I sign up??

Mmmmmm.... sounds snappy.

Dash is funnier to play, but turret ships are what they are. They all run circles to minimize return fire. To me its boring too.

The Decimator does literally fly in circles and hammer things with laser blasts. It's a very straightforward ship. It's also not that hard to take out with concentrated fire, mangling weaponary and blocking.

The other two "pancakes" (the YT-1300 and YT-2400) play quite differently. The Outrider is a much more green dice based ship which behaves more like a 360 interceptor. One setup with Kyle Katarn effectively makes a large based 360 Soontir Fel.

The 1300 plays about halfway: you can set it up as a tank that flies in circles and it can be set up to ignore damage like nothing else, but the prevailing form uses Engine Upgrade to dodge arcs. Turrets pay for their 360 arcs and thus have to avoid concentrated fire lest they fall to the superior attack dice of larger numbers of arcships.

Turret ships are in general boring where a fighter has to try and avoid arcs while getting a bead on something turret ships just have to avoid rocks and arc dodge the best they can.

The decimator is designed to storm in weather anything you throw at it and come out the other side smiling, it's a direct and brutal ship.

Yea, I've been less than impressed with it, I'd rather have a loaded Defender going for that price.

I never fly my Y-wings in circles, I fly them with the rest of my fleet for support. In fact, I don't think I've ever flown a turreted ship in circles, I use the turret as a way to make me less picky about maneuvers, and not worry as much, but I don't fly in circles.

I used mine with EI and expose it was brutal in one game it killed leebo a b-wing and a headhunter all by itself.

There were alot of two banks during that game though.

Yep, large turreted ships bore the hell out of me too. It's just running away for an hour while taking potshots at the ships dumb enough to follow you.

If your playing a hard enough list and a good enough player you really need to toll the decimator up right and fly it appropriately or its dead. If your just flying in circles then why bother. It has a decent dial and you can fly figure 8s if it's that bad. I wouldn't call most rebel ships much or than this for range of used moves. But if you want to try out some real fun load it up with a tactician or 2 and try and keep it in arc and range 2, something a bit more skilful for you to try :)

Well , if you want minimize return fire, you should. It's completely normal for Ywings and Hwks to break formation once combat starts. By the way don't take this as criticism, i am just stating that i find them boring to play, i don't expect you to find them boring. To each their own.

I agree that flying in circles would be boring. What I don't understand is why turreted ships have to fly in circles? I mean, sure its an easy way to avoid getting blocked (once you've passed the enemy ships anyway), but flying predictably is well, predictable. I never fly my turrets in circles for this very reason. I mean, most turreted ships have poor agility and do not stand up well to concentrated fire, so flying in circles only telegraphs to your opponent where you're gonna be, making it easy for him to maximize his shots against you. Doesn't seem like a winning strategy to me, and if its working for others, perhaps its a case where many players just have not figured out how to best take down a turreted ship?

So reading some of this, I think I need to go three ways

1 load up on loads of crazy crew and gizmos to keep it interesting

2 Keep it simple, basic ship and use the rest of the squad points for non circling tactics

3 put the plastic stand of doom back on the shelf

3 put the plastic stand of doom back on the shelf

1: Use an Epic flight stand. (ohwait...)

2: turn and shoot and turn and shoot and turn and shoot and turn and shoot and turn and shoot.

3: Oicunn SMASH.

I love the Deci. Always have. Love the Aesthetic, love the turret. Love the ramming. Love the HAH, HOW DO YOU LIKE IT YOU REBEL B***tards! Falcons and dash still prolly do it better, but I love that imps have something that can give 360 doom.

I love every ship in the game... even that Crappy Ole Crow.

Hey the HWK has it's place. Before scum came out i often used it for "pirate forces".

It is also part of anti phantom...

Said I love it...

:P:D;)

I mount mine on four pegs so it can look down on all the other ships.

That gives you a reroll on offense and defense due to height advantage.

Large base 360 turret ships are a bore to fly and play against. All my experience of flying against are:

Reveal a three bank.

Am I in range 1 or 2 or something?

Yes? No?

Barrel Roll and/or Boost Focus and/or Target Lock

Ignore rocks because Dash said so. Ignore arc because 360 said so. Ignore range bonus because secondary weapon said so.

Did the ship you fired upon die?

Yes? No?

Go back to step 1. Go back to step 1.
