Who will win the tournament within the tournament at US Nats?

By dutpotd, in UFS General Discussion

Ok, you all know what I'm talking about. I'm talking about which Chun-li player is going to come out on top and win the Diversity tournament at US Nats next week.

Off the top of my head (please add to the list of achieved - correct names or statements below-, or add yet to be achieved but strong players planning to run Chun-li and at US Nats) and not trying to disclude anyone, we have the following...

Matt Kohls. Famous for a lot of things, but more recently famous for playing very well with Chun-li but not coming out on top of the diversity in many of his recent showings (I think one or two regionals but not Path or Cannats?)

John Macek. Famous for placing 4th, then 3rd, then 2nd, then 1st with his Chun-li and for using some unconvential tech in his decks. Word is he also avoids the 1 check like the plague!

Nick A. Diversified at Can Nats, I only played him once but I am quite sure he also uses a few special/unexpected cards in his Chun-li. Will he be running her again?

Mike Lowe, Winning the mini-tournament of Chun-lis at Cannats, Mike runs a very solid Chun-li deck that a) gains life, b) gains momentum c) readies stuff, all with free enhances!!! Will he follow up his North of the border top 8 with a South of the border top 8 and a consecutive Diversity battle win?

JChang. Winning the GB WI regionals with the Blue Beauty, he has since gone with Kyshiro at a more recent regional, only to finish very well but not topping the event. Will he be at Nats? Will he enter his bid into the Tournament within the Tournament and play his Chun-li???

Who will win? Who will place the spinning bird kick to your face on your own turn! Only time will tell. But here, on the forums, we can still have fun with our meager predictions.

Also, who else is going to run Chun-li and enter into this tough crowd? Speak now or forever hold your peace, and by that I mean don't show me Chun-li when I sit down across from you at US Nats next week. In fact, don't even bring it out of the sideboard!!!

Please post your following predictions:

1. Number of Chun-lis played at the event.

2. Will at least one Chun-li top 8 - yes/no.

3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event.

4. Which player will it be that wins the tournament within the tournament and plays top 8 as Chun-li?

5. Will SoS or an equivalent tie breaker play a part, like I think it did for Chunster, at the Cannats?

6. How many Chun-li Sandbags will be in the top 8?

7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol?

8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing?

---

My own guesses at the questions that will define the torunament within the tournament at US Nats.

1. I think we will see at least 7 different players playing with Chun-li as their starting player. I wouldn't be surprised if it is as high as 10.

2. Yes... or I will kick myself for not playing as her lol.

3. I think 1 will be diversified. i.e. two in the top 8 before one gets the boot.

4. I honestly can't say.

5. No, I think they will have a 1 point differential but both be in top 8.

6. 1 sandbagger. I know that this is pretty much saying that there will only be 2 Air decks of the top 8 contenders, that is my prediction.

7. No, I hope to see one or two of the 7+ played as void or water, but I don't think it will be one that top 8s or is diversified out.

8. The real (non bagged) Chun-li will top 2, if not win the whole thing.

Too many Chun-Li's IMO

Everyone loves that hoyoko-sen

1. With the bans not taking place until July, expect Chun-Li to be played in full force before she receives the big blow of losing, well, all 3 cards. I'd say 5 minimum.

2. Duh, yes.

3. Well if my prediction of 5 is correct, then I'd say 1 or 2 are DQ'd due to DV.

4. Hopefully a no-name, because I'm about sick and tired of the over-appraisal players get in this game.

5. Nah, I think one Chun-Li will outperform the others.

6. Oh lawl. Well, with everybody and their dog now miraculously discovering the awesomeness of Mignon and Olexa, I'd say 3, because I imagine Olexa, Mignon, and Chun-Li will all top yet again.

7. No.

8. I'm going to go ahead and say no. My money's on Akuma.

1. Number of Chun-lis played at the event.

Being fronted by Chun Li? I'll say around 5-6. Someone with Chun Li in their sideboard? 10-12

2. Will at least one Chun-li top 8 - yes/no.

If one doesn't I'll have lost all faith in Matt Kohls or Mikey Lowe :P

3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event.

One, because those who don't wanna try to be king of the hill will be sandbagging into her.

4. Which player will it be that wins the tournament within the tournament and plays top 8 as Chun-li?

As I've only seen Matt and Mike play, I'm gonna say one of them.

5. Will SoS or an equivalent tie breaker play a part, like I think it did for Chunster, at the Cannats?

It usually does.

6. How many Chun-li Sandbags will be in the top 8?

Too many

7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Oh... Er you were being serious? No.

8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing?

Top 4: Yeah she'll be there, even if it is in the sideboard.

Top 2: Potentially... It'll all depend on if she faces an Order deck in the top 4

Winner: No probably not. As much as I hate her (almost as much as I hate Jon Herr's character), Order just has TOO many ways to commit her.

I dont think Macek is going, but if he was my money would be on him. But I dont think hes going.

1. Number of Chun-lis played at the event. - 5

2. Will at least one Chun-li top 8 - Yes

3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event. - 1 or none. None if the chun li in second realizes he can't make it past the undefeated one and gives the other guy a win.

4. Which player will it be that wins the tournament within the tournament and plays top 8 as Chun-li? Matt Kohls as long as he remembers to use LotM's free enhance.

5. Will SoS or an equivalent tie breaker play a part, like I think it did for Chunster, at the Cannats? Quite possible.

6. How many Chun-li Sandbags will be in the top 8? 2-3. Kirk and Andrew most likely.

7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol? No.

8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing? Yes.

Also, how can anyone hate Jon Herr more than Chun Li. That's crazy talk.

PaulBittner said:

I second this sentiment. Unless it is a legging contest you can't honestly harbour any hate for Herr in relation to Chun-li. (No offense Jon).

A Chun Li will definitely top 8.

  • 3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event?

H eaven knows!

  • 7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol?

  • 8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing?

L ikely. Very likely.

S o which player will win the diversity battle then I wonder gui%C3%B1o.gif

Wow Hewitt, just wow haha.

You switched the "H" and the "O" around but I won't fault you for it, since that is pretty **** funny

It is quite clever isn't it. Thank you Hewitt for a) gracing my topic with some creativity and thought, and b) actually answering the 4th question gran_risa.gif

- dut

1. Number of Chun-lis played at the event. - 6

2. Will at least one Chun-li top 8 - Yes

3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event. - I think there will be 3 that would qualify for the top 8, so 2 will get Diversified out.

4. Which player will it be that wins the tournament within the tournament and plays top 8 as Chun-li? Matt Kohls (Just cause I won't be there :) )

5. Will SoS or an equivalent tie breaker play a part, like I think it did for Chunster, at the Cannats? Yes, I think there will be two Chun-Li's with the same record.

6. How many Chun-li Sandbags will be in the top 8? 3

7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol? No.

8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing? Yes, I'd say top 4 at the very least.

sucks that you can't make it John, I will try not to let you down

1. Number of Chun-lis played at the event. - 7

2. Will at least one Chun-li top 8 - Yes

3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event. - 1 or 2

4. Which player will it be that wins the tournament within the tournament and plays top 8 as Chun-li? I think it will be Kirk sandbaging as mignon again.

5. Will SoS or an equivalent tie breaker play a part, like I think it did for Chunster, at the Cannats? yes always does

6. How many Chun-li Sandbags will be in the top 8? 4 any combination or Tira , Olexa , and Mignon

7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol? No.

8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing? Yes.

my vote goes for Protoaddict. It HAS to HAPPEN.

1. Number of Chun-lis played at the event.

A little less than 25% of the decks at the event will be Chun li-that combines sandbags/sideboards and main boarded. I'm guessing about 40-50 people will be there, so as outlandish as it seems, I'm saying 8-10

2. Will at least one Chun-li top 8 - yes/no.

Stupid question is stupid =p. Sorry, dut. I'm not saying you are stupid (that right there would be flat out false), but the answer is a no-brainer. Yes, she will

3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event.

I'll say 4. Some of the sandbags/sideboarders will make the top, though.

4. Which player will it be that wins the tournament within the tournament and plays top 8 as Chun-li?

If Macek goes (and with all due respect to the other Chunners out there), he will. He has already diversified Matt Kohls at a previous major event.

5. Will SoS or an equivalent tie breaker play a part, like I think it did for Chunster, at the Cannats?

No. It will be close, however. Assuming 6 rounds, I'll say the winning Chunners will have at least a record of 4-1-1, with the runner-up coming in at 3-1-2 or 4-2-0

6. How many Chun-li Sandbags will be in the top 8?

I'll go with 3. Yes, this implies that I am saying half the top 8 will be comprised of Chun-li.

7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol?

No. Maybe off of water next month. Void doesn't have what it takes to make her work right.

8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing?

At worst, she will top 2. To be honest I don't know how the matchup is vs. HanzoKick, because that is my other pick to win it all.

Thanks for that clever little thing you did there, Hewitt. Quite amusing.

1. Number of Chun-lis played at the event.
8

2. Will at least one Chun-li top 8 - yes/no.
duh

3. Number of Chun-lis diversified at the event.
2

4. Which player will it be that wins the tournament within the tournament and plays top 8 as Chun-li?
Jeremy Ray isn't playing Chun-Li

5. Will SoS or an equivalent tie breaker play a part, like I think it did for Chunster, at the Cannats?
yeah screwy bsnss always happens

6. How many Chun-li Sandbags will be in the top 8?
1

7. Will we see a top 8 (or diversified) Chun-li off of either Void or Water as a primary symbol?
nah

8. Will Chun-li top 4, top 2, or even win the thing?
top 4

I want Jeremy Ray to win this one. Me and him in finals! :)

There is no real point to this thread as everyone is just going to name someone they like or a local guy to win the chun li diversity battle.
But here we go
1) 5
2) Yes
3)2
4) Mike Lowe, He's mah boy, and He's Foxhound's babyface!!!! And he proved his worth at can nats.
5) You bet.
6) 3
7) you'd have better luck milking a bull
8) top 2

Hehe. I think there was a lot of point to this thread. I agree though, there isn't really a lot of point to asking which 'player' will win - other than to stir up some competitive spirit and all ^^

Where the point comes in is that a lot of people are answering the same thing, or in a very similar ballpark, for most of the non-player specific questions. Which begs the question, will the expectations of the masses be fulfilled or will the Chun-li's cave under the pressure!?!?

The way everyone answered my question 2 seems to indicate them Chunners will stand tall and represent the Chinese vixen yet again.

It's also interesting to me to see some of the funnier responses, and adds some lightheartedness (is that even a word?) to the forums. Which was actually my main point in the thread 'tournament within the tournament' = I find it comical that there is this 5-10 man mini tourney going on between all the players that play Chun-li. Of course I respect the process, it, for some odd reason, just makes me laugh out loud when I think about it.

That is all.

- dut

ps. maybe I will have to run my void Chun-li just to prove everyone wrong ^^ well, except question number 2. As HDC stated, stupid is stupid, even I can't prove that one wrong short of hiring a 100 man crew to thieve away all of the Chun-li character cards in the world before the event (and then I suspect proxies would be allowed on account of this unnatural disaster) mwahahahaha!!!

...

It's been a really rough week for me, apologies for the manic behavior.

Yo! I was reading this interesting thread which pretty much what I have been thinking about also. Then I noticed that I was actually mentioned since I did run Chunli. Dutpotd did say if I was going to be at Nats playing with Chunli. Well, I would love to be there but as of now I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. Chances are not so good for me making it. But would I have gone with Chunli again? I have no clue. I usually go crazy about who to run at events. Also this is Nats so it'll drive me even more nuts because it's a bigger one.

I went with Kyoshiro in the last regional because my friend was the one going to run Chunli. I let them have their options before me selecting who to play. They went with Chunli and Astrid. If my friend didn't go with Chunli would I have ran her at that event? Most likely, yeah!

But yeah, I'm really interested in seeing the turn out of Chunli's and how many is going to get cut from top 8 and so on...

Good Luck Everyone!....

Not only are you going to be there, you will make top cuts even if you do play Chun-li. Jack Chang and Adrian Bautista are the 2 most consistent players in the game they always make top cuts. Now if Bautista and Chang play the same character they will both make top cuts because there tiebreakers and unwritten abilities will make the computer explode or something along those lines.

Hehe, ****! I want you to be there Jack, if only to meet someone as solid as you.

Shaneth - I also agree that a lot of people are secretly routing for Mr. Ray to pull some stuff together and Top the Top of something, myself included. Of course, I also cheer for a lot of other stand-up individuals that I know that play the game, and it can often be summarized as - want to see everyone do well -

dut -- toss some Leaping Commando Kicks in that Void Chun Li, and I guarantee you'll make top 8. :)

As long as nobody notices that, hey, that card rotated last year...
