New Subforums

By Moore84, in X-Wing

With Scum coming out soon should FFG make faction specific Subforums for each faction along with a faction specific "list discussion" Subforums? I personally think this would be a great idea, what do you guys think?

If you have too many sub forums, you end up with no forums at all. Turns away new people and fragments the community, resulting in less posts per topic.

no more subforums. FFG made a stupid decision to not allow the viewing of inner subforums in the general forum. those subforums will be much slower than the main. just watch.

they can still run if they dont crreate too many more. once it becomes too many they will become deserted.

i think it would be cool to have a painting and modelling sub-forum. i think people would be more likely to post their cool swag there as well as custom work and such....and it would keep it out of the main forums

I'd like a General/OT one and a customization forum but anything more than that would indeed be stretching us pretty thin.

I guess I just browse PP Warmahordes forums and wish it would be the same for X-Wing

same here.

I haven't been on the PP forums, but I'm guessing they have MUCH higher traffic than we do here. That's why they can support specific faction sub forums.

Ask and you shall receive! Great move adding the squad list sub forum!! Whether you want them or not it's still reassuring that FFG LISTENS to the player base!

I'm wondering if they didn't just make too many new subforums already. Making faction specific forums for list building really doesn't help much if you consider all the cross talk that sometimes goes on when discussing lists.

Guys i did ask everyones views on this.

Some people responded to that thread. I compiled the most common requests in the 'which sub forums would you like' and sent them to the mod i was chatting to.

They agreed that painting and list building were good ideas.

I've flagged up that 'what would you like to see' thread several time over december and nobody said 'leave it as it is'.

So if you're really upset about them its probably my fault, sorry as i was in discussion with the mods on here, but given how popular the repaints thread is there was clearly a need for it and also 'look at my list' is possibly half the posts on the front page so detracted from talking about *playing* the game.

Given that *this* was my orginal suggestion:

Hi Evan
As we discussed earlier I asked the player base what they would like to see in the forums.

I think one thing , and you’re not going to like this, a lot of people wanted to see was ‘more moderation’. I realise you chaps are quite pushed to read and check it all.

If there any possibility of giving a limited pool of forum members the ability to edit/delete/move posts and have perhaps five to ten ‘player/reader mods’. Perhaps their only power is to temporarily move questionable threads to a pending area for one of you chaps to go for. In other forums I’ve done moderation for there is an additional forum for moderators/forum administrators to discuss issues around potentially questionable posts so that moderation can be consistent and fair.

It would be tricky to know who to choose though. I think you’d need people with no real axe to grind and also those who were quite moderate. (i've deleted here a para where i recommend some people i think would be good player mods)

As for topics and forums.

Well you gave us off topic, thanks for that, its brilliant.

The key things people seem to want are a :

New Players Area (with possibly a pinned glossary of common abbreviations and terms)

List Building Area (with possibly pinned list of common ‘competitive’ builds)

Repaints and Conversions (this seemed to be the most popular request I’ve seen since becoming a member of the forum about six months ago, it crops up time and time again. I know FFGs business model is to supply ‘pre paints’ but clearly a large amount of forum users are customising their ships so you may as well acknowledge it as ‘added value’ to the hobby/game)

Less popular sub forum ideas but still contenders were:

Scenarios and Epic Play
House Rules

Well anyway, thanks for reading this. I’m really grateful you created ‘off topic’ and I think that its proved in a small space of time that it was needed, helps build ‘community’ and also makes the main board less confrontational.

At the moment I feel the board is quite heavily biased towards tournament players who should perhaps post more in organised play but I know players like myself if given ‘repaints’ as a sub forum and ‘list builds’ would be very happy. So Evan, if you can talk the guys into anything (and if in fact you even want to) my personal suggestion to round it up and make people happy would be

List Build and Critiques’
Painting and Modelling
New Players/Rookie Pilots

As additional sub forums

At the very least a pinned post in the main page for the repaints thread and the addition of a pinned post for ‘common forum terms and forum code of conduct’

Thanks for reading, hope you had a great Christmas and that you have a good New Years Eve tonight.

Cheers

Im just amazed they responded so quickly so thanks FFG for putting in the two extra bits a lot of people wanted.

There is an issue when unofficially asking a question. You ask "what do you want to see?" the natural instinct is to give a response with something instead of simply saying "we don't really need to make changes." A question such as yours is easy enough to miss except by those who wanted to see the changes.

If I put this another way it is like when you look at unpopular politics happening because 90% of the people are fine with the way things are and aren't paying a lot of attention while say 9% want to make some big changes and actively pursue that leaving just 1% to try to "wake up" the 90% about what is going on.

The new subforms may not be the end of the world but they are a pretty big change and change isn't often received well.

Sure, not everyone read/reacted or noticed the question of Gadge about the subforums.

But I honestly think those who replied are a representable sample of the community as a whole.

With the people who were fine with how it was included. There has been some positive goading for answers from the community. This was not a simple 'what do you guys think?' question where five answers were collected and used to make up a recommendation.

It has given several major subjects their own place, but it still leaves the general forum open for speculations and reviews.

It gives people a straight road to the major subject they are interested in. It will also simply prevent some topics to be drowned off page one in a matter of seconds. The major topics are logical choices. Rules to begin, organized play to find opponents, squad lists for ideas, battle reports to tell us how it went, repaints for your personal touch, mission control and technical support and feedback to increase variety of play, and off topic to blow off some steam.

It can guide everyone from the newbie, through the casual re-painter, to the fanatic tournament veteran to a section where they will find those who are even more like-minded than the all of us togethe already are. (after all we all did start X-wing for a reason! :) )

Thanks Evan, thanks Gadge.

Happy 2015 to all,
