Optional deployment, side missions, story missions cards...

By ErikaDeSouza, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi, I'm sure the answers i'm looking for are probably in the rules reference guide or learn to play booklet but... i'm getting tired of reading so many references!! I'm totally new to FFG, never played Descent... I love Star Wars, my 9 years old kid loves Star Wars and i decided to give him Imperial Assault for Chistmas, we have played the tutorial mission and another mission from the campaign guide but i can't find when do side missions come up or story missions... Don't even know when do the Upgrade Stages occur!!!

Please, feel free to give me a hand

The big books of text can be quite daunting. It took me forever to find the setup for the tutorial.

In the L2P guide, see page 13. It details the steps on what to do after a mission.

There it lists how to spend credits/xp/influence.

The first story mission should have been Aftermath. After that, as directed in the Campaign Structure section, draw 2 cards from the Side Mission deck. The heroes choose to do one of the side missions. The next story mission is dictated by the outcome of Aftermath, 'A new threat' if rebels win, and 'Under Siege' if Imperials win. This is listed under 'End of Mission' in the campaign guide for Aftermath.

There should essentially be 2 available side missions at all times (after the introduction mission, Aftermath). When the heroes finish a side mission, redraw from the Side Mission deck.

Refer to the Campaign log on the back of the Campaign Guide, as the heroes cannot choose to do endless side missions. This is to balance threat level to cumulative xp strength.

as felkor pointed out, side missions are not optional. Edited to reflect this

The heroes can choose to do one of the side missions, or the next Story mission.

I don't think the heroes can choose to skip a side mission. I think they have to go Story Mission, then Side Mission, then Story Mission, etc. as laid out on the back of the Campaign book.

Ah you are right, something in my head just made the assumption that 'side' missions were in nature optional. I re-read the rules and they are not optional. Thanks

Thanks,

I'm going to play now and follow your instructions :)
