Upgrade cards in booster packs

By bokkendo, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm guessing that the expansion pack ships that come in the starter have different upgrade cards in them to make people want to buy them. Can anyone confirm this?

No confirmation yet, but i would say there is a VERY strong probability that there will be cards unique to the expansions.

Well, we know the fighter expansions for sure have different upgrades (Wedge and Mauler Mithel) for core set ships. I would bet that some (probably most) of the upgrades for the caps will overlap, but that some will not. I would assume that the title cards will be distinct for sure, as will the commanders, as these will serve as the different "pilots" you would be getting in, say, an X-Wing expansion.

As always, this is purely speculation, though...

Does X-Wing have faction neutral upgrades that can only be acquired from one factions expansion?

I can only remember two examples of this off the top of my head, though I bet there are more. Only the TIE Defender has predator, which is one of the best EPTs in the entire game and is faction neutral, while sensor jammer only comes with the Lambda shuttle. I'm sure there are others, but I remember predator in particular because I don't want any more stupid TIE Defender's (one is enough) but I need more copies of predator!

I don't have the latest wave, though, so the new YT and the Decimator may change this.

Another big one is Engine Upgrade. It's only available with the YT-1300, which annoys us Lambda pilots like you wouldn't believe >.<

Methinks this thread should be moved to the X-wing section :P

Or it could just get back on topic, which the answer sounds like yes - there (like in X-Wing) will probably be unique cards (upgrades/crew/leaders/pilots) in the expansions to entice people to buy them.

I'm fairly sure that the FFG CEO said that there would be upgrades in the expansion packs that were not in the core set at GenCon.

There's a ton of neutral upgrades in X-Wing that you can or could only get in a given expansion pack.

Push the Limits, Engine Upgrade, Heavy Laser Cannon, Advanced Sensors, ect... In fact most upgrades are neutral faction wise. I would expect the same to be true of Armada.

If you check out the Armada products on the products page, you can see additonal cards - the CR90a expansion comes with Raymus Antillies, which is pretty sweet.

I have no doubt that this will follow X-Wing and encourage people to get one copy of each expansion for the full experience!

This question is why I joined the forums. I would LOVE got get an official answer from some FFG staff.

I will also note that I don't think it's a very consumer friendly option. I want to play Imperial (because Star Destroyers) and if there's an upgrade card in the Coriilian Corvette that I want it's pretty bad to have to buy a whole expansion that I'm never going to use just to get a card.

I know it's what they do with X-wing, and it's why I don't play X-wing. It would be great if everything were faction specific and a player could have all the options by buying all the ships and squadrons of their given faction.

I know, that design decision has already been made, and likely everything is printed and probably on it's way to distributors, so there's not much I can do. But It's vexing nonetheless. And an answer would be appreciated.

Edited to add: I've got no issue with upgrade cards for the faction being only in expansion. So, maybe the VSD pack will have an upgrade or commander that isn't in the core set. Totally fine. My issue is having to buy rebel ships for an upgrade.

You will get your answer as soon as they post a news article for one of the Wave 1 expansion ships. So in due time (and I expect before the core releases) you'll have your answer.

I'm sorry to disappoint, but it is almost assuredly going to happen. There are many cards that are (or were) faction-less and yet only found in a single expansion. Engine Upgrade, Stealth Device, and others. Later Waves often corrected this by putting these upgrades in the other factions expansion, but many are still available through only a certain faction. The upcoming Scum and Villainy expansion is going to exacerbate this issue to extremes, as there are already 4 or 5 upgrades that I think look awesome that can be used on Rebels or Imps, but they will (for the moment) only be available through Scum and Villainy.

You can hold on to the (imo vain) hope that Armada will be different, but it is made by the same people who designed X-Wing (some of them anyway), published by the same company, and targeting the same audience. Chances are things like this will occur. My suggestion is to play both factions (make lists for both and just have fun with it) or get a friend who doesn't want to invest in X-Wing to play with you using your unwanted factions models. Or just collect them and make them look pretty.

Have people not been looking through the released product images? This is an older post, but it's got all the images together in one spot: http://www.phdgames.com/imperial-armada-spotted/

Seems pretty straight forward, they'll put different cards in the expansions. Still it'll be nice to see FFG release formal writeups.
