List-building for epic...

By StarWarsDad1138, in X-Wing

So I have played a fair amount of standard play, but very little epic. I'm looking for some general rules on list-building for this format.

I will likely be building for empire, though I do own enough for a rebel list as well. No epic ships however.

My Imperial collection is fairly extensive:

1 firespray

5 TIE/Fighter

5 TIE/Interceptor

1 TIE/Bomber

2 TIE/phantom

2 TIE/defender

3 albino void manatees

2 decimators

I'm looking for list ideas and/or general rules for list-building for epic.

Kagi is invaluable in Epic.

Royal Guard PTL Ints are really good at just kind of weaving through traffic, to clean up wounded enemies.

If you only have 1 bomber, it should be Jonus, particularly with 3 shuttles and a Firespray on HLC duty.

Decimators are funny, but die swiftly to the Single Turbo hardpoint. 2x0=...

With so many points available, it may be tempting to slap on a bunch of fancy upgrades, but keeping it simple and maximizing your ship count goes a long way. Making any one ship too much of a target will cause it to get focused down pretty quick.

Keep in mind what ships you want to have flying together, and how you want your flight groups to relate to each other on the starfield.

I would love to field 300 points of tie fighters. That would be 25 academy pilots. I can dream.

Thank you for that particular reminder! I hadn't considered that (haven't played against it often enough).

Not to mention that while Ocuin can ram the whale for a damage, the huge ship can ram back for removal.

Also if you can get within the 2 range after surviving proton torpedo shots from range 5 to 3 you might be facing at quad laser cannons that can reroll if they roll all blanks.

I've had good success combining Ion Turrets, Ion Cannons, and Ion Pulse Missiles in Epic, but I was playtesting my Imperial DP20, and equipping your Imperial squad that way might not be as easy:

Captain Kagi (27)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Ion Cannon (3)

Intelligence Agent (1)

Ysanne Isard (4)

Colonel Jendon (26)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Ion Cannon (3)

Intelligence Agent (1)

Fleet Officer (3)

ST-321 (3)

Krassis Trelix (36)

Ion Cannon (3)

Gunner (5)

Ion Pulse Missiles (3)

Captain Jonus (22)

Predator (3)

Ion Torpedoes (5)

Ion Pulse Missiles (3)

Munitions Failsafe (1)

Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)

Ion Cannon (3)

Ion Pulse Missiles (3)

Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)

Ion Cannon (3)

Ion Pulse Missiles (3)

Sigma Squadron Pilot (25)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Intelligence Agent (1)

Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Sigma Squadron Pilot (25)

Advanced Sensors (3)

Intelligence Agent (1)

Advanced Cloaking Device (4)

Total: 300

I'd propably go with this:

Howlrunner (22)
TIE Fighter (18), Determination (1), Hull Upgrade (3)

Academy Pilot (12) x 4

Captain Kagi (35)
Lambda-Class Shuttle (27), Sensor Jammer (4), Flight Instructor (4)

Omicron Group Pilot (24) x 2
Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Ion Cannon (3)

Delta Squadron Pilot (37) x 2
TIE Defender (30), Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Saber Squadron Pilot (24) x 3
TIE Interceptor (21), Push the Limit (3)

299 points

Swap Shuttles to Decimators, if you want to use them. Downgrade HLC to ions. Just take Patrol Leaders + Gunner.

Not to mention that while Ocuin can ram the whale for a damage, the huge ship can ram back for removal.

We had a 7 man 400 vs 400 game that contained 5 decimators. 2 of which were run over by the cr90. Tuns ou they're not really special in epic for 2 reasons. Althoughthey can get a lot of ships in arc, they can still only shoot at one. Also those 16 hp look a lot less scary after the first round of shooting by a few x-wings.
