Assemble the Fleet

By Mikael Hasselstein, in Star Wars: Armada

Here's the morning's news: (I'm surprised that I'm the one posting it, given that it's noon here in PDT already.)

Assemble the Fleet

There's a ton of information here, but the most interesting (IMO) is the stuff on the objective cards.

I've also added the revealed material to the wiki .

The more I read about this game, the more excited I get.

Okay, so the objective cards had been released before (now supplemented by Most Wanted), but it had just escaped my attention. Still, it gave me something to add to the wiki that I had not added before

Maybe I missed this, but two questions?

1. So you're required to take a commander? and thus a flagship?

2. What points totals are they targeting for a game? because doing the math with even the VSDI, you can't fit it and Tarkin under 100 points... is this going to be a 150-standard game?

1. Yes, you are required to bring a Commander.

2. 300 points is a standard game.

It is looking like you can get 2 VSDs + Upgrades/Squadrons, or 1 VSD and 2 Gladiators+ Upgrades/Squadrons, if you really try you can fit 3 VSDs and Tarkin, but you have very little room for upgrades (40pts, if you use the VSD I)

I'm probably going for two VSD's and squeeze in as many upgrades as I can. Starting with that delicious additional broadside firepower.

That! Still waiting for confirmation that the victory expansion will come with different upgrades than the starter set, but it sounds like that may get addressed as they go through wave 1 (See the end of the Assemble the Fleet announcement).

Consider that confirmed.

You can look at the available images and see that the upgrade cards are different. There's a little overlap, but there are also a number of cards in the Vic Expansion that are not in the Core.

I am praying this game is awesome. The core set will determine how hard I buy into it, but I love some of the things mentioned in the article. Plus I've got some buddies who don't play X-wing that are really interested in Armada so hopefully things are looking up...come on tax time!

What has made your buddies stay away from X-Wing?

I'm curious where the untapped market is for Armada players. There's a number of my X-Wing community who are declaring that they're not going to get into Armada, and I want to see where I might gather more people for Armada from outside that community.

Awesome, thanks for confirming that!

I liked that they brought out that wave 1 will be released at the same time as the core.

I stayed away from xwing also, but am really looking forward to Armada. The reasons being I love the large scale and was afraid of the cost to be able to do the large scale I always envisioned in my mind. But am hoping the captial ships will last longer, and require some real thought into the Battle plan.

I do think that this game will be more taxing on the gray cells, because it seems to have more dimensions to it than X-Wing does. I don't know if that's a vice or virtue. While I've never been afraid of complexity, as I get older I am starting to realize the limitations of my brain.

Ah but the brain is like a muscle you don't use it you lose it :)

Very much so, but I use mine excessively already, to little avail.

No better way to keep away dementia and alzhimers than playing x-wing and armada

Me? I'm a disenchanted Star Trek Attack Wing player. Was never into the scale of X-wing, wanted a more epic "feel"

so here we are

I would try Warhammer [40K] Players, Armada may be considered "Expensive" to X-wing players, but it is still going to be cheaper than Warhammer [40K], and it would offer more depth than X-wing for those who are more accustomed to strategy based wargames.

Also the board size/game length would also be very similar to Warhammer [40K](6'x3' vs WH's 6'x4') so that is the pool I would go with to recruit from if your X-wing group is "tapped" already

Most excellent.

So, what disenchanted you from Attack Wing?

How do you think we might reach the disenchanted Attack Winger demographic?

Hm... well, I think a lot of people have been frustrated by the Borg, and their "abuse" of the movement and shooting templates, so emphasis on that not really being a thing that will happen in Armada is probably a plus.

Organized play is probably a moot point, it was cool for WK to put out unique stuff only accessible by organized play. but that was annoying to not be able to have limited access to it. FFG isn't really known for having gameplay relevant stuff in organized play kits (my FLGS rarely got any of the Dust Tactics kits, because they were expensive for some cheap patches/bags)

Model quality looks to be better in Armada; variety of play, with the separate dynamic of the fighters co-existing with the capital ships. The flight stick certainly seems more interesting for the scale than the flight path

Price is definitely going to be a sticking point though

I don't know what sort of unique stuff you're talking about. (I've also not done any Attack Wing, so I know nothing.) In X-Wing organized-play kits they've included acrylic tokens and alternate art cards. I'm not sure if that's an equivalent of what you're talking about.

I think that with X-Wing's immense (and growing) popularity, FFG is figuring that they can sell an up-market product that prices somewhere between X-Wing and WH40K. It looks like a lot of the game pieces are a bit more high end than in X-Wing - e.g. the bases, movement 'flight stick', and command dials with plastic containers. Assuming a proportional mark-up, they can probably make more money on Armada, and they have X-Wing as a gateway drug, while still having it as a place where the poorer gamers can continue to hang out.

There are several ships that could only be collected from winning a monthly tournament, specifically the Ferengi cruiser, Federation Nebula class, the Tholians, and more, legitimate different playing stuff.

Not sure sure "FFG will make more money off you" is a great way to explain away a price

Oh, obviously that's not a selling point. I add it as just my musings. As a selling point you can say: "yes, it's a little pricier, but look at the cool stuff! There's a heavier plastic-to-cardboard ratio than in X-Wing!"
