Lambda vs Decimator (for fun and purchuse)

By skrapsan, in X-Wing

I'm debating whether or not to buy either a Decimator or a Lambda shuttle as my first big ship. The reason for this is simple availability. I live in Norway and with a population of 5-6 million people the local companies are a bit carefull about what they import of new untested stuff.

So far I have been collecting 1 of each small ship +aces packs. And I want one of each large one. I postponed buying those until I had most of the small ones. And now that I do, well it's time to look at large ships as well.

And I was wondering, which one is the most fun for cassual play? I have heard a lot of cool stuff about the great white whale of the stars, but what about the decimator is it any fun? I have a friend who got the YT-2400 for christmas so I'll most likely be squaring of against one of those sometime soon.

Oh and bear in mind that for actuall prices the decimator will cost me about 50% more than the Lambda, or a small ship.

Decimator !!!

It's a tough call.

I think the Lambda is the more useful ship overall, (as it's so cheap and you can do so much with it) but it's got a rather large learning curve. Once you learn it though, the Shuttle is very, very useful. I've never made a tournament list without one.

The Decimator is fun if you like turrets and the "running-away" playstyle that comes with flying a turret. Oicunn is pretty fun though.

I'd suggest the Lambda. It plays like nothing else, is definitely a challenge to fly, cheap enough to fit in almost any list, and comes with a host of interesting cards (notably Vader, Captive, Advanced Sensors and Heavy Laser).

Decimator but I'm biased I can't fly the shuttle very well, deci with its turret is much more forgiving where the shuttle can end up turning forever trying to get back into the fight and never quite making it.

Do you want to run a Decimator list? The Decimator is your list and the Shuttle fits into other lists.

The dial on the decimator is so much better than the shuttle. I like the shuttle but the shuttle's dial sucks

Both.... it's the only way..

Shuttle is a beast for the points, and it's dial can be worked around thanks to Advanced Sensors. The generic and Yorr are both tremendous pilots. It includes several cards that really help the Decimator later: Rebel Captive, Darth Vader, Anti-Pursuit Lasers. Between Rebel Captive and Yorr, it has both the best Imperial options for inflicting and defending against stress.

Decimator is good, but I feel like it doesn't truly come into its own until you get an Engine Upgrade.

Full disclosure: I've recently gone from "Eh, I'll never need more than one shuttle " to being the guy who is excited to have just gotten his third for Christmas.

I'm still looking forward to trying out my Deci & 2 Shuttles list ;)

As others have said, the difference is largely in the point cost and the learning curve. I had been hoping to really have the Decimator be 'my' ship (instead of the TIE Bomber, which I've flown a LOT), but once I had it, I didn't really fall in love with it.

Still it's fun to make it a decoy for your opponent to chase after while your mini-TIE swarm pounds his ships. the Lambda is just fun to turn into an anti-pursuit obstacle in the middle of the board - the greatest Academy pilot of them all :D

I advise this: flip a coin. Before you reveal the result of the flip to yourself, feel which you actually hope it is, and go with that one without consulting the coin.

Lambda is super challenging, but a great ship. Its what I started with. It also makes a bunch of fun builds possible.

That said, I think the Decimator is just more fun.

Thanks for all the great advice, I'll sleep on it (lives in Norway). And then decide tomorrow. Perhaps a dream will tell me what I want to know.

But know that I will be getting one of each large ship as well. The question is only, what to get first.

Both.... it's the only way..

This. I have a Lambda and two Decimators. You will want both.

Shuttle. Hlc is a good card and so is advanced sensors. The shuttle is like an expansion for b wings that comes with a free imperial model.

Shuttle has a bigger learning curve. Both dials are quite similar in regards to turning around. The shuttle however can't shoot backwards so you have to plan a bit more.

For fun sake, I would say shuttle. If you add a decimator to a list, it typically is a decimator list. You can add shuttles to a wide variety of lists. Plus, if you are casually playing against the same opponents..... playing against a decimator constantly is a lot like flying against a falcon constantly, stale.

But at the same time, if your friend flies the 2400 a lot, not having a turret might really weigh on you.

I would like to thank you all for the feedback, and I have decided to buy the lambda first, then I'll follow up with the decimator when funding can be obtained.

Lambda can be very hard to fly. It also has a lot of great upgrades that can currently only be gotten with the lambda.

The Decimator is much easier to fly, its upgrades aren't quite as useful (still some very useful upgrades) on other ships.

I would get the cow first, easier to fit it in a list, and more tricky to move. Wait for the prices to drop on the Deci.

You won't sleep well until you have both.

The decimator has a better dial, more hull, can take more crew and with the turret primary weapon the firepower is unmatched. However the shuttle does have one advantage over the decimator besides the measly 1 agility and a sensor slot. It cost the same points as an X-wing, where the decimator will simply eat up half your squadron limit without even trying.

So what is better, 2 Patrol Leaders with Engine Upgrade or 4 Omicron Groups with engine upgrade?.

2 patrol leaders give you

  • 3 firepower turrets on 2 ships
  • average 0 agility a ship
  • 8 shields
  • 24 hull
  • dials with no reds

4 omicron gives you

  • 3 firepower on 4 ships
  • average 1 agility a ship
  • 20 shields
  • 20 hull
  • dials with a red stop
