Krassis Trelix: HLC or Mangler?

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

Apart from a single game, I was not satisfied with Krassis Trelix and the HLC.

You are too fast in R1 or you need to turn and use the rear arc.

So, would the Mangler Cannon be the better alternative for Krassis? Its ceaper and you could use his ability in range 1.

As a side note: Kath Scarlet + Mangler Cannon =

I think I like Mangler better, but it's a toss up.

I will say that if they cost the same, I would usually pick the HLC, but I am not sure if it's 3 points better.

Also consider that you can have 3 Mangler Shuttles and Captain Jonus, with 3 points left over. Fun!

If you're problem is getting outmanuvered, the mangler cannon won't help with that

Kath is nice with the mangler because you still can take predator, which is a bit better than Krassis's ability. It works in both arcs and makes her ability more likely to go off.

With phantoms, fat dashes, and exposed ei'ed decimators, being able to dish out stress is awesome. I think Kath with a rebel captive and a mangler cannon will be a good ship to fly.

Kath + Rebel + Mangler + VI = 46 points

Enough points left for 3 Alphas.

How many points are left in the list that you are looking at putting Krassis into? If it's just enough for Krassis + HLC I think I'd prefer Krassis + Mangler + Recon Specialist.

Krassis + Mangler = 40 points

2 x Sigma + Particle + RecSpec = 60

Stress Kath

Kath + Tactican + Mangler + Predator + Title + Flechette Torp = 49 points

3 x Black Squadron + Predator = 51 points

The issue is the cannon can't fire backwards so your looking at two to three turns of use at most so the cheaper option wins out with a firespray I think.

Depends on your skill with flying a Firespray. I have gotten a lot more shots off than that before with a HLC.

Throw a seismic charge on the firespray and learn to fly.

Most I've ever put on a firespray is a recon specialist, I put my cannons on the defender where they belong.

I fly Trelix with HLC almost exclusively. Come in a nice pace and let the good times roll.

I'd prefer the HLC for dealing with nimble fighters and the mangler for dealing with big hull heavy freighters or slow fighters

How about:

Kath 38

+ Mangler 4

+ Marksmanship 3

+ Gunner 5

+ Seismic 2

Krassis 36

+ HLC 7

+ Tactican 2

+ Proxy Mine 3

= 100 points

In this case Krassis got his HLC ... just because higher first strike firepower is needed. You don't want to be in R2 either.

I just don't see the value of mangler on a 3 attack ship. I still think it's best use is the new scum cheap fighter, the outrider as a turret, and a few random ships that benefit from crits (ten numb).

It's basically doing the same thing as marksmanship, but costs a point more, and wouldn't be worth using at range 1 unlike marksmanship. I think 4 points is a waste for it, I'd much rather have the HLC for 3 points more. If it only cost 3, then it might be a bit more enticing.

The value comes from the long range shots. No extra die is handy. Plus, at range 2, there isn't much of a difference unless you are using abilities that require primary weapons. It's only at Range 1 that the Mangler is worse.

I agree that there are benefits to the mangler cannon over your standard 3 dice attack, mainly at range 3, but I just don't feel it's worth 4 points. 3 seems about right, same as the ion cannon.

To be honest I think I'd just use an Ion Cannon, or even a Flechette. Your primary weapon is your primary weapon, and Krassis' ability ensures that your target is ioned or stressed so that you can leapfrog it or K-turn over it and hit it at R1 with your lasers.

The mangler on dash is scary. And you though fat falcons were bad.

However with Krassis you are getting (almost) predator and the crit bonus/r3 die denial, so your 4 point investment is really almost two 3 point investments.

Most circumstances I agree with you, I don't like the idea of a Ion Cannon on a 3 die ship (paying points to roll the same amount of dice, while not being able to do more than one damage?) but this is one situation where I see the mangler being worth 4 points on a 3 die ship

Krassix is a 35 point ship that already has 3 attack dice. HLC would be better with him.
