I played against this the other day and was wondering whether it worked the way my opponent thought.
He was running Kenkirk with two tacticians and a gunner. Using this combination to put up to 4 stress onto a fighter in a round of shooting.

Provided the first shot misses, and you're at range 2 and inside his firing arc, yes it works this way.
"Inside his firing arc" being the important part. The firing arc is printed on the cardboard. 80° front. The VT-49 can shoot outside the firing arc. Which does not trigger tactican.
Yes, the crew cards stack AND if he uses gunner they stack again.
P.S. He doesn't have to use gunner on the same target. So if he had 2 different ships, both inside his firing arc at Range 2, he could double stress both ships!
What does double stress even mean?
What does double stress even mean?
It's not a game term. Means two stress tokens on one ship.
What does double stress even mean?
It means 2 stress tokens on a single ship. Since typically a ship can only remove (clear) 1stress token a turn from green moves, a ship with 2 stress tokens will stay stressed and not be able to perform actions for a round.
Ok, thanks.

Unless it's Tycho, who has a Big recycling bin for stress tokens in the back of his cockpit.
But he still can't perform red manovers, unless I'm missing something.

You're not. He can't perform red maneuvers while stressed.
But with the maneuverabilty of the A-wing, that's not a terribly bad thing. I flew him the other day, and it had been quite some time since I'd flown an A-wing. I'd forgotten it's got a really good dial.

As long as he doesn't need to K-turn, stress is nothing to Tycho

Tycho Celchu (33)
A-Wing (26), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Chardaan Refit (-2), Daredevil (3), Experimental Interface (3), Push the Limit (3)
My personal best were 27 Stress tokens on him at the end of a game after some 15 or 16 turns (okay he had a tactician as well)!
