Han Shot Second

By Budgernaut, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

We were looking at Han Solo today as my Rebel players tried to decide if it was worth going on Han Solo's side quest. As I read his Return Fire ability, it struck me that this new Solo is the Special Edition one. His ability reads: "After an attack targeting you is resolved, if you did not suffer any [damage], you can interrupt to perform an attack targeting that attacker. Limit once per round."

While the LCG's Han Solo was clearly a Han-shot-first joke*, this one is not. I can't help but wonder if this was an internal decision or a Disney edit.

*Reaction: After this unit is declared as an attacker or defender, deal one damage to a target enemy unit.

Hmm...you could house-rule it.

Something like: "If LoS is checked against Han, that unit is dealt one [damage]"

That unit doesn't even have to have been activated! Just if the imperial player checks to see if they have an LoS on Han. :P

Well they did word it as an interruption

Not only does he shoot second, he only gets to shoot back if the enemy misses (or does no damage, at least).

Interrupt

Some abilities use the term interrupt. When resolving an interrupt ability, players pause the current action of the game and resolve the interrupting ability. After the effect is resolved, players resume playing from the point that was interrupted. For example, if an attack is interrupted, the interrupting ability is fully resolved before players finish resolving the attack.

• It is possible for a figure to interrupt its own activation.

It is worded as an interrupt, but it is "after" the triggering attack "is resolved," so I'd say it's more a matter of interrupting their turn, rather than interrupting their attack, in this case.

Interrupts technically occur before what they are interrupting. So Han still shoots first.

No. He can't interrupt until the attack is resolved, so I believe the purpose of the interrupt is to shoot them while he has LoS, before they move away. Besides, since the attack has to deal no damage, there is little reason to interrupt. The fact that the attack has to "miss" reminds me of Greedo shooting, Han dodging, and Han shooting.

The Han Solo ally pack fixes this issue. The "I Make My Own Luck" command card allows Han to seize initiative and you would then have the option to shoot first. The Quick Draw Holster in the same pack allows a hero to shoot first by interrupting a declared enemy attack.

It's depressing that he shoots second. I wish I never read this thread and thought about it. Sadly, I can't unlearn what I have learned, I'm too old for that.
