Threads like these are part of the reason why I love this community. It's the same with the Edge of the Empire forums - passionate and knowledgeable people lending a helping hand, with a healthy dose of humour and wit (for the most part).
Merry Christmas everyone!

Yarrr, the first catch of the day.
Merry Christmas to all, and welcome to the addiction for all the newbies. I agree with the sentiment about these forums being friendly and helpful. Awesome bunch. Lots of great ideas to be had. Enjoy, and fly casual!
I'm a newbie too. Looking forward to diving in. I just need to find some advice, on what to purchase, after the core set. Merry Christmas.

Conventional wisdom here says that you should get another Core Set, just to at the very least get more dice and ships in a cost-effective way. After that, you'll have 4 TIE Fighters and 2 X-Wings. We could go on and on about what to buy for which faction first, depending on your own leanings, but I think the reality of the matter is that you'll be limited to what you can actually find online or at your local store.
The game is fantastic, but the turnaround on reprints of waves is pretty rough. For those of us that were in from the beginning, we've been buying them up as they release, so it doesn't matter, but to get started today, your best bet (if selection is limited for you in your area) is to just get what looks cool on the shelf and get playing.
If you're trying to play in tournaments and are lacking in the necessary cards to field what you want, ask around your local store, and make some X-Wing friends that could spot you the materials. You could probably also find someone online selling card singles at a premium.
Just get yourself to a 100pt list for whatever faction you like more, and the rest will take care of itself in time.
Good luck out there.
Barnes and Noble has plenty of ships in stock, including some of the harder-to-find ships like Y-Wings and Tie Advanced.
Follow these rules and you'll do fine:
1 - Fly casual.
2 - Don't get cocky.
3 - Let the Wookiee win.
Good luck, have fun, and may the Force be with you, always.

I'll second this. Barnes and Noble's X-Wing stock has always had a healthy variety whenever I've poked my head in.
Also, While I'll likely be picking up a HWK after I branch into scum for some debuffing shenanigans, the non-scum variant doesn't seem too popular from what I've read. Is it worth picking up at a time when I could only make use of the rebel pilots?
Welcome. As a new player the first thing I can recommend is watch the tutorial videos (Link) by FFG, they helped me many moons ago get the basics of the game really quick.
Edit: Tried to embed, but as you can see I cant get it to work

Nah, the HWK doesn't see virtually any use with the Rebels. It pops up once in a while, but it shouldn't be TOO high on your priority list until S&V comes out
Also just FYI, even though it can be hard to find some of the ships (due to reprint status) people tend to be pretty good about lending people cards etc for you to use- even in tournaments (I've lent a few myself, usually things like stealth device that people are often short of).

I dunno- I see a few Roark lists locally as a counter to phantoms. It's not a bad ship, you just need to build it to complement your list and don't expect it to won games by itself.

Um Falcon HWK list were in some of the top lists at Worlds.
To all of our new friends:
You've taken your first step into a larger world.
:-)
Thanks for the helpful feedback.

The HWK really depends on what you want to do. The unique pilots have some sweet support abilities. My first win in the FLGS league in which I've dabbled, came against a TIE swarm, with Roark as the centerpiece. I would probably go after some of the harder to find ships first, especially if you can get them at B&N. This is totally dependent on the faction you want to play, etc.
Am also something of a newbie, but going to try my best to get to grips with Squints, Space Cows, Defenders and Phantoms. Because Rebel scum are apparently having an easy ride with the 2400 wave...

Interceptors are high risk/high reward. Really good fun to use, it's with good reason that it is a lot of people's favourite ship (including mine
)

You will be. You will be....
Er, wait, I wasn't set up for that line.
Hi there.
I have joined your ranks by this Xmas too by giving my GF (who collects all sorts of SW stuff (LEGO, revell, action figures, etc.)). 2 Cores boxes + Wave I, AW and TB. So far we have opened only one core box and have tried one quick game but it was great. We had not much time becuase I had to go back to our flat due to work (24/7 shifts). I'm really looking for Monday when GF arrives with the rest of boxes we left unopened for easier transportation and we try proper game with more ships.
I really didin't expect it to be so hard to get 2 cores and all Wave I ships (TF 2x) theese days. All shops are empty
.
I have had some luck to run into good e-shop with several pieces left. So I restocked my "gift wardrobe" hideout. So now I only wait for Wave II restock + TiE phantom and B wing. I guess I dont't have to think about present for GF at least for year. ![]()
