Why 2 starter boxes

By CrypticApathy, in X-Wing

Why do people suggest 2 starter boxes?

Back when the game first started, it was the most cost effective way to get more ships. It also helps with extra maneuver templates, damage deck, and dice requirements, and it is perfect if you plan on playing only in casual settings where you are providing materials for both sides.

However, with the plethora of new ships and other ways to get extra X-wings, templates, and dice, there really isn't a need for two cores.

Recommended (almost required) for casual players but not required for competitive players.

It's the best way to kick start your collection, mostly due to;

  • Extra dice (which you need for range 1 shots, proton torps or range 3 defence - unless you re-roll dice and add to total)
  • total of 2 x-wing 4 TIE
  • spare templates
  • spare damage deck

It's the best bang for buck if you like/need the above.

But having said that, if your serious you will probably end up with some acrylic templates and tokens anyway so that will negate the need for spares... and if you know what faction you like and which builds you want i'd recommend focussing on the items you need.

Check out Team Covenant for any particular upgrade cards you want as they sell them separate to the rest of the expansion pack, so you can buy the specific item you need.

It's a great way to get extra material

If you really enjoy this game and can see yourself playing for the long haul then I recommend it.

For example a small ship is 17 bucks at our local store.

If you were to buy 3 ships that's 51 dollars, plus if you buy the extra dice you're looking at another 6-8 bucks, so your looking close to 60 bucks

Vs

One core set which will give you 1 x-wing and 2 ties, dice, extra dmg deck for friends if they don't have one, and that's about 45 bucks

So your looking at 15 dollars roughly in savings, which you can put towards another ship.

Getting the two sets helps get more ties to use for swarms and mini swarms and having the 2 xwings helps as well.

Then if you grab a tie and xwing expansion you'll have 5 ties and 3 xwings and your well on your way to building squads.

I'm not sure what your budget is but I recommend it.

If you can don't just stick to one side.

By using both factions

By familiarizing yourself with both sides will help improve your game.

Every ship is unique and knowing their strengths and weaknesses will help your game. And best way is play both sides.

Sorry but the above poster imo is not being helpful by saying not get the second core set because there are more variety of ships out now. While yes that's true, having 2-3 xwing and 4-5 ties is never a bad thing.

It also helps to have it for friends who may want to try it but don't have any of their own ships.

There is never anything wrong with having more options for you, and when introducing new players into the game

It's just plain economical. An x-wing and 2 ties will cost you $45 if bought as singles, or $40 for all 3, extra templates, and extra dice.

Team covenant it's expensive.

It was also common when the game stated because of the Tie swarm. It was a good way to get 6 tie fighters quickly.

Somehow, I have one 2-bank and three 2-straights.

I also briefly had 32 cards in my main damage deck, so a spare was handy until I could get that sorted.

Yes and I lost my biggs card and still have no Idea where it went.

My buddy gave me one out of his second core set and I returned his once I hot my second

I think it's significantly better for Imperial players than Rebs. You need TIEs in bulk, whereas two X-Wings will suffice (but you'll want one from the X-Wing expansion pack to get the unique pilots).

I personally don't recommend it. You do get the tokens, templates, and ships. However, you get a lot of duplicate materials.

Many people buy more than one, a-wing.for example, and that is fine. Fantasy flight is putting out expansions that have repaints of ships. I suspect this will happen more and more, so from a cost point, why by the same thibg over and over when you can wait to get a new expansion with a repaint?

I have decided to buy only one of every expansion, when I can afford it, as I see ships being duplicated in future releases. I just don't need 7 a-wings (or even one e-wing).

Dice and TIE's.

Started six months ago I have one core and a dice pack. Have been building my collection and would rather have one of every ship than spending my limited budget on two core sets. That's just my opinion.

If you do buy more than one core set, saw a single range increment off of the second range ruler. I've found it really handy to have the shorter range ruler to get in and check if things are within range one. It's a lot easier that trying to poke the long range ruler into group of ships.

Also, when starting and there is no community, 2 starters, an X, and about any other imperial ship gives you a solid 2 player, 100 point game. Good for getting people hooked and buying their own stuff. Course now there are enough players, and I have enough stuff that this is hardly an issue.

That said, it is still a cheap way for a new player to bulk out their fleet and get some extra dice if they play both factions. If you just play one faction, it is not as good of an idea.

Team covenant it's expensive.

agreed, but cheaper than buying an entire expansion when all your after is one upgrade card, for example the sensor jammer from the Shuttle expansion.

Before the invention of Aces, this was the only multipack. It's still better than the Aces as your secondary, due to the extra templature, dice, and deck, and also helps mass the cheapest ship.

It's not a collectible game, buy what you need for the lists you want to build, one of each does you no good unless you want specific upgrades in low quantities.. there is no ship of which I only have one...

I think after reading the comments I will skip my 2nd starter. If rather spend the money on other stuff.

If you are making your decision on money look at it like this:

The retail cost of the three expansions is $14.95 USD each for $44.95

The retail cost of the Dice Pack is $7.49

Total: $52.34

Retail cost of the Starter set: $39.95

buying a second starter would save you $12.39, that is nearly enough to purchase another small ship expansion pack.

Well you'd spend £30 just on the ship's another £5 on more dice which you will need, 2nd set let's each person have their own movement templates, their own damage deck etc which saves time when playing not having to pass stuff back and forth.

At £25 the starter sets a bargain, look at 40k it's £70 for their starter and you don't even get two equal forces to use marines always have the advantage.

But I only play rebel so the extra ties will just be collecting dust, I picked up a extra set of dice already. So the templates and x wing will be all i use, which I can get for 30. The shop I play at has a demo set to teach new players, so no reason for me to have 2. I can spend the 30 on 2 exspansions or 1 big ship which would be more useful for competitive play.

Also.. if in the US, go to target.. right now they are probably only 20 bucks... you can get 2 for the price of one.. I have opened 4 core sets, and have no regrets.

Last year around Xmas they had them on clearance and some found them for 15 or less.. its a sound investment, especially if you're playing the imperials..

I think playing only one side is kind of like only getting to experience half of the game, as both sides have their own play style.

Imo having the extra ships is great for if friends come over to your house.

Plus as you buy expansions I think it'll be pretty hard to buy rebel only as certain upgrades comes with specific ships.

Predator for example comes with the defender, and Stealth device comes with the slave and tie advanced.

That's just my 2 cents

You can swap the ship's you don't want with someone or keep them for intro games with friends.
