Epic: Do ship classes perform accurately?

By R22, in X-Wing

Do you think ships reflect their class (general fighter, assault fighter/bomber, interceptor) when performing their role? As in do Y-wings, B-wing, and TIE/Bombers shred capital ships? Do A-wings and TIE/Interceptors rip bombers apart? Are X-wings and TIE/Lns decent in every situation? This seems like something more easily visible in Epic matches where interceptors are streaking out to attack bombers hunting capital ships.

Each ship is obviously fashioned to reflect their roles in things like Y-wings having more hull and TIE's not having shields through things like stats, dial, and abilities. But now that I think about them in the context of epic especially, do people pick ships thinking of their roles? It seems like they are picked more for red die and hull first, point cost second. Everything else is secondary. In epic it strikes me that ship class should be all the more easily seen and influential. But it seems they're more flavor when it comes down to it. If that's the case it strikes me as somewhat disappointing. Am I wrong here?

One way to do this would be to create title or 'class' cards that are cheap that reward their style of play. Interceptors like, well, TIE/Interceptors and A-wings could get a bonus against bomber. Bombers/assault fighters could get a free target lock against capital and large base ships.

I don't have a huge amount of experience playing epic, from what I have seen. No.

Because of how the damage mechanic works and the (flavorful) way turbo lasers were implemented you end up with a situation where the best thing to attack a capital ship with is the small, nimble arc dodgers while the bombers and ordnance ships, the ships that SHOULD be desirable against capital ships, get left in the box.

If ordnance behaved more the way it was supposed to, lots and lots of damage but relatively easy to dodge, and then capital ships had some sort of armor mechanic that negated a couple points of damage. So that interceptors had little chance to do significant damage to a capital ship, but the ordnance carrying bombers couldn't really miss. That would have fixed it. But its kinda too late for that now.

Although, I suppose that IS true to the lore. X-Wings not Y-Wings are what destroyed the Death Star.

A pair of Scimitars that each hit the aft of a CR-90 with an Ion Missile, and each follow up with an Advance Proton Torpedo, are going to ruin the Corvette's whole day.

I think it would be a lot easier to do that than to pull off something similar with a Defender- and certainly is easier to do that than to try and use a bunch of Tie Fighters.

Totally agree with the desire for an armor mechanic, perhaps with a hard point or mod or something.

In the case of ordnance, it ends up being pretty effective against huge ships. The reinforce action is a straight -1 damage to each incoming shot, so high damage attacks are made much more effective. Additionally, it is much easier to line up a focused, TLed attack. Ordnance is still a bit pricey though.

The above bomber tactic is among my favorite tricks vs. huge ships since you first obliterate their energy and then get a nigh guaranteed 8 damage past that reinforced shield. It will start the next turn without shields in the rear and will only be able to generate a paltry amount of energy.
