Merry Christmas to all!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

Hope the force is with your dice rolling this day.

Given the reputation of the star wars holiday special, I thought that would be a lot worse. It was a bunch of disconnected skits in the middle of an ongoing narrative that was mostly because it was in shyriwook and they didn't have english subtitles. With a little more effort it would have been not half bad [not half good either, just a lot of mediocre] (a lot of the special effects were lousy, but hey it was the 70's)

Dude, did you get to the part where the Old Man Wookiee gets off on VR porn?

The seventies were a very strange place. . . . .

yeah it was a bit psychedelic... I was born in 76 so I have early memories invovling "C.H.I.P.S." the incredible Hulk, the original battle star galactica TV show, wonder woman, the six million dollar man, the bionic woman, there were some weird generic (no name, at least no name that I can remember) super hero shows back then that I loved but looking back they sucked (worse than the holiday special and I don't even need to rewatch them to realize that). This is the same era as the Adam west batman show (a so bad it's good show, but as I kid I thought it was straight out awesome). There was also an awful lot of polyester back then. Comparing the holiday special against stuff from the same time frame makes it seem not so bad. Star wars was the new hotness when I was born, I saw empire strikes back and RotJ in theatres. The first time I saw a new hope it was at my pre-k. They projected up against a painted concrete cinder block wall and I think it had english subtitles and no sound.

Don't get be wrong there is a lot of not good in the holiday special, but it wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen on TV (which is what it's reputation was) and objectively speaking with a little more effort (e.g. english subtitles for the wookiees so we could understand what they are saying) it could have been a solid mediocre "yeah whatever" and have just been forgotten rather than being celebrated as an epic failure. The Ewok adventure made for TV movie wasn't that bad, sure it was a little later but it was largely forgotten.

In the early 80's I thought the Condorman movie was awesome, and I'm sure my memories are colored by the lense of a child's perspective but it still seems pretty good to me (re-watching it might change my mind).

yeah it was a bit psychedelic.

You're telling me - I put it on last Thanksgiving after I got stoned out of my **** mind, and holy hell was I freaked out by this sequence when it came on. It was. . . . interesting!

I think people are so down on it because it's so batshit crazy - but honestly it's no worse than any other vararity show that came out in the seventies. Believe me, I have DVDs on my shelf that make the Holiday Special look like Empire Strikes Back. You haven't lived until you see Florence Henderson share the same stage as KISS. . . .

then I guess I've never lived :D

the cooking show was crazy, stir whip stir whip whip whip stir

the holographic circus was crazy

the VR "porn" sequence was crazy

I had trouble finding some of the later segments (like the cartoon)

the tatooine thing made sense sort of

the trading post guy made sense

jefferson starship, well whatever, it was a holographic music box.... there's no accounting for taste but it didn't seem crazy

lumpy assembling the what was it a translator, the instruction video was "odd" but not "crazy" I imagine that there are a lot of ALIEN aliens so that doesn't too unbelievable.

Luke and Leia seemed normal

Han and Chewie flying around in the falcon seemed normal.
