X-Wing Slang Glossary

By mrfroggies, in X-Wing

Froggies - I think having a separate section for ship designation / slang would be great.

Just use "control" instead of "rebel control"

"Lists and strategies that emphasize limiting or influencing the opposing player's options"

Overcosted: overpriced, too expensive points-wise for what it brings to the table (e.g. TIE Advanced pre-Raider)

Do something to explain Dash's donut. Been asked this a million times.

The donut hole is referring to the Range 1 blind spot if you're running a YT-2400 with HLC+Outrider Title. Since the ship can only use the Heavy Laser Cannon, it's limited to Range 2-3 only (even though it's 360* turret). So there's a "donut hole" at Range 1 where you can shoot at it, but it can not shoot back.

Most commonly used with Dash Rendar pilot (aka Super Dash build).

Thanks. I truly do appreciate your response. I know what it is. I am suggesting he place something in his glossary to explain it, as I am sick of explaining it to others. :P

  1. I would also add a section for shorthand for all the different TIE types, both technical designation and "slang". For example see below. Note the font not being Arial - Courier New is great for equal spacing here.

I've made some updates, and I've added a section for the Tie types. MJ you mention doing the Same for the Rebels. I don't know any of the slang for them. If any one knows, please post and I'll add it to the list.

I had to look these up (I knew the TIEs minus the Advanced, which might not have slang)

  • X-wing: "pointer"
  • Y-wing: "wishbone"
  • A-wing: "slim"
  • B-wing: "cross"
  • Z-95: "skull"
  • E-wing: ???

Edit:

P.S. "Brights" refers specifically to the TIE Avenger, and is not the same as Vader's x1 TIE Advanced or the ships flown by Tempest & Storm Squadron. I don't know if the x1 has a nickname.

The Tie Advanced is the Bright. I'll add these in right now.

According to Wookieepedia it says this. "Bright was a nickname that was used among starfighter pilots who served with the Rebel Alliance and later the New Republic. It was used in reference to the Imperial TIE Advanced starfighter, as well as other "advanced" models of TIE fighters.

This is where it gets confusing. There are 2 ships that have been called theTIE Advanced:

  1. TIE Advanced that Vader (X1) and Tempest / Storm Squadron flew
  2. The later descendant that was significantly more powerful (almost as much as the Defender), and was nicknamed "Avenger"

"Brights" referred specifically to #2, which we do not have in X-wing Miniatures. We only have #1.

Edit. P.S. I added this thread to the Index of useful links. :)

Got a link? I'm curious. Here's the description specifically for the Avenger:

The TIE/ad starfighter or TIE Advanced was the culmination of a series of starfighter designs first explored with Darth Vader's TIE Advanced x1. To avoid confusion with Lord Vader's personal craft, it was known better by its nickname TIE Avenger.
Incorporating the previous successes of the TIE Series starfighters, along with those of the Rebel Alliance, the TIE Avenger was one of the first production starfighters to break away from the Imperial doctrine of quantity over quality. Incorporating deflector shields, a hyperdrive, and warhead launchers, it was also significantly faster and more maneuverable than any existing Imperial or Rebel starfighter, so enemy pilots nicknamed them "brights".

I so massively appreciate this thread. I genuinely can't believe how fast and complete this thread is already.

Cheers all.

Awesome post, big help to those of us that are new to the game, and even newer to the forums.

Forrtress - a formation of ships positioned so that by self-bumping can stay stationary indefinitely.

Here's a common one that should be added:

Alpha Strike: Having a Focus and Target Lock when you attack.

Also two other things that might not be immediately obvious:

Dash's Donut Hole: in reference to a YT2400 with Outrider Title and HLC creating a range 1 safe zone which can't be attacked.

Double Tap: in reference to Corran Horn's abilty to fire a second time at end of combat.

Alpha Strike: Having a Focus and Target Lock when you attack.

That's not an Alpha Strike.

An Alpha Strike is the use of multiple missiles/torpedoes to cripple an opposing fleet in the early game.

My understanding of an alpha strike is the first attack of the game where all the ships in a list are able to attack. Ordnance was usually involved when focusing a list an the alpha strike, but not always, it was just a focus on how hard your list could hit during the first exchange. Obviously this was more important during the jousting era of the game and not so much anymore.

With all the new Scum Ships and cards out, I think it's time to add a bunch of new cards to the list. I thought I would give this a bump to get some help with this.

Fixed.

I henceforth deem all Scum Z95's with Feedback array : Zbacks.
