I've been seeing this come up a few times lately where users are fishing for urls (I'm sure there's a word for this?) and finding pics of pilots and upgrades that have yet to be released.

I'm not here to pass judgement or anything, but does anyone else have a problem with this?

To me, FFG (particularly the guys and gals working on this game) is doing a good job. I like what they do, want them to be successful, and want them to be in control of their product. I see no reason (aside from being selfish) to ruin FFG's ability to write a preview article and prematurely spoil these cards. This will, in no way, shape, or form, benefit FFG in any way. Right? Or am I missing something?

I guess you could Devil's Advocate me and say "well, they should have protected them better if they didn't want them spoiled!" As if we're not in control or accountable for our actions....

Like I said, if you can't handle yourself, then do what you must. Who am I to judge? I just ask one thing....

I think they put it up because we're getting a Scyk preview in the next 24 hours, and they needed the art assets on the server when the post goes live to ensure the article works.

Sure, that's always a possibility. With the game having to walk such a fine line of balance, I'm just nervous of tipping their hand or forcing them into a position of "punishing" the community. With information coming out before it is officially "released," you never know what effect that is going to have.

By punishing, I mean either: Finding some way of addressing the leak and taking action against us to prevent further leaks.

Essentially being forced to publish a pilot or upgrade before they were ready.

It might not be very soon. Due to the holidays, they probably had to put it on the servers in order for it to go live automatically.

We're not stealing FFG's property. We're linking to openly available images on FFG's public-facing server.

I love the spoilers, It gets me idea of the incoming, and get some ideas of squads, and I know that there are players like you that hate spoilers so I respect and put off discussions, maybe is the point of many talks, both need to put attention of what reveal, greetings.

Many times, companies allow things to be leaked because it increases buyer awareness and increases customer motivation. it's a common tactic.

I don't think twice about it. The more plastic crack they spoil the more i get to jonesing for my next fix...

FFG could address the issue fairly easily if they cared to. The information that is leaking is information that they are prepared to have go public and is usually only becoming available days before they release it. The URLs that people discover generate product hype and community engagement.

FFG has nothing to gain by stopping these leaks.

They don't go up until they're needed anyway. That, or they were probably meant to go in the article and didn't (K4 Security Droid, Ion Cannon Battery are examples here). Who knows how long Mangler and Flechette have been sitting there?

If FFG really wanted to hide the previews they'd use sequences of letters and numbers for the filenames. I doubt they're that bothered about people getting the urls given they're releasing them as spoilers very soon after anyway. Otherwise they'd either use one of the great multitude of ways to stop people "url fishing" or straight up ask the community on the forums not to. It's not as if they can't see what's going on the forums.

I think the spoilers before the FFG article build interest. We got three cards today, but I'm sure there will be more cards spoiled in the article tomorrow (or whenever it is released). That means everybody is talking about an upcoming release and getting excited for two days instead of one. That seems like a plus to me.

And like many others have mentioned, if FFG is bothered by this there are so many easy ways to get around the URL fishing trick.

Why would they need them up in advance? Surely they can upload them at the time they post the article, and presumably the CDN will cache them as soon as people start viewing them. My view is if you want something to be secret you don't store it unencrypted on the Internet. That's not a blame the victim thing, like all those arseholes saying Jennifer Lawrence et all brought it on themselves, merely an assumption. If it is the case that either they don't mean to post them in advance or they don't know of a better way of achieving their aims but still would rather people didn't spoil them then they have my sympathies.

Certainly I hope people mark as ILLICIT SPOILER UPGRADE any threads they start about them.

Of course, if they decided to totally scrap all spoilers till they hit the stores I'd be happy with that too!

That would be terrible. The previews drive pre-orders. By getting people to contemplate running different builds they are more likely to order enough to meet that build.

I only get so many ships because I get a preorder discount. I also wouldn't buy as much if I couldn't split it over several paychecks. Without the previews I would only order one or two of each ship.

If FFG didn't want us to find them, then they wouldn't post them online. It's that easy

The only real negative is that a lot of guys list build a preview to death and thus have the fun all used up before the actual ships are even released... then they come on and complain about how they are tired of the ships!

There is no way they could of played them for real for more than a week.

So, you look through a shop window to see items that they are putting up (the web team uploading resources to a publicly facing server), and see the items being put up relate to an announcement that everyone's been expecting. You point out those items to friends and start discussing what you've seen (starting a thread pointing towards said publicly facing resources).

Only leaching scum such as news companies would equate the above to stealing
