I need some help building a thief, if you wouldn't mind.

By GloriousGekko, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I recently purchased the EofE Core Rule Book after GM-ing the beginners game. This next session is my turn to play a character and I was wanting to do something different from primary combat classes that my PC's chose for Mos Shuuta. I like the idea of being a thief and I kind of wanna tie in Force Sensitivity if I can. Does anyone have any ideas that would help?

Sentinel Shadow in F&D fits your request pretty well I would think.

If you have Dangerous Covenants (the Hired Gun Sourcebook) there's a weapon that suits stealthy characters perfectly - the vamblade. If you don't have it, that's no issue, a knife or vibroknife fits the job as well (and is a lot cheaper!) Its really up to you how you build your character though.

Another issue for your character is, of course, credits. If you're playing Knight-level (FaD) then you get vastly more starting money. Also, you can increase Obligation to get more starting credits. A single vamblade will cost 500 creds (for best effect, buy 2 for 1000 creds) compare to the knife (25 credits) or the Vibroknife (250 creds)

The Shadow from Force and Destiny is a terrific suggestion.

If you're sticking to Edge of the Empire specifically, then the Thief & Force Sensitive Exile are the specializations where you'll want to hang out. They compliment each other pretty well.

If you want to be Force-sensitive, then a good idea would be to dabble in some Force powers, for a thief, maybe Influence (These are not the droids you are looking for), Foresee, or Move

Also, who else is in your group? A good idea would be to consult with your fellow players to gain some insight into their characters, and adjust your build accordingly

Thank you for all the help. I'm sticking with EofE for now, my group lives about 3 hours from the base I'm stationed at so I'm thinking of starting a Skype or Roll20 game with them on the weekends, from there we will add on AofE and FaD. The other players right now have a Wookie Body Guard to kind of tank and we are still ironing out the others, one was a Smuggler, and I forget the subclass, and I think she is gonna stick with that one while the other was a Bounty Hunter who's subclass I also forgot. We have another player who drops in and out as a Droid Colonist. I enjoy playing stealthy characters and I figured since we have two heavy hitters that it would compliment them pretty well. With my skills, I'm fairly new to these type of rpg's, would melee be better than short range for a thief? I was thinking of having her background be more of a flight than fight kind of chick.

If you feel that you want to be melee-focused, then you could always spend some exp to pick up the Melee or Brawl skill or another specialisation that uses the Melee or Brawl skill. Other than that, if you want to be more ranged-focused, the Thief, being a Smuggler subclass, has Ranged (Light) as a career skill

Thief doesn't have Range(L), Scoundrel does.

I'm not sure if you are looking to get as much done in just one spec as possible, or if you want to cross career fields/specs. In regards to being flight as opposed to fight, it depends on the spec of course, but Range(L) would probably be more advantageous in that regard.

Ok, I will look into that as I build. If she has the force power Sense, she could have 'a knack for knowing when trouble is coming', in regards to sentient beings anyway. That way, in her history, she's never really had to fight. Could provide for some interesting situations.

You don't necessarily need Ranged (Light) to be good with a blaster (a high Agility, which will also help you out with Stealth & Coordination, not to mention Piloting), but the Scoundrel specialization does also have a really cool talent tree, and is actually one of the best to synergize with FS Exile.

From there, if you get into AoR, you could take the Infiltrator specialization for its excellent Melee & Brawl abilities, or continue your Force training with the Emergent, which is also really well-suited to synergize with the Scoundrel.

Staying just in EotE, I think you've got several strong choices on how to build a good thief. The first question is species. There are three choices that jump out here based on base characteristics and abilities.

Bothan - Streetwise and Convincing Demeanor

Twi'lek - Charm or Deception

Human - Pick two

Characteristics are next. I think you have a couple choices here. Do you want to talk your way out of trouble or avoid it all together? You definitely want to consider upping Cunning and Agility. Those will be your major characteristics and I'd call Presence your third option. It's nice to have, but you could probably get away with it being a 2.

From the Smuggler career there are plenty of good choices. The only one I wouldn't consider is Piloting Space.

From Thief I'd want Computers and Stealth. Stealth for obvious reasons and Computers because it will be handy to have a bit of skill in, even if you aren't an amazing slicer starting out.

Out of the Thief's tree I'd start with the upper right corner. Bypass Security and Hidden Storage are some sweet talents for minimum XP

From FSEx I would again start in the upper right, but generally be looking to pick up just about everthing in the tree as I progressed. I would skip Forager; Insight is a toss-up and really depends on what Powers you want to have.

As for Force Powers, Sense is a clear winner here to me. Move is a great Power (and if you want to use it pick up Insight) but Sense fits my concept better, and doesn't require me to invest into Discipline.

Equipment:

A disguise kit, a holdout blaster, a datapad, and a comlink are the only "must haves"

Other gear that you might want to acquire through your trade:

Lock Breaker, Tool Kit, Slicer Gear, scanners, toxins, etc.

I also love the idea of a cybernetic weapon or brain implant. That'd let you appear to be an average unarmed citizen, but you'd have a couple tricks up your sleeve if things got messy. However, a starting character would be hard pressed to get their hands on that kind of stuff.

Anyway, that's my rough take on a Thief build. Without specifics on party makeup, XP allotment, and play style, it is difficult to be much more detailed about what I would do.

There's a really good deep-dive into the Thief specialization you might want to listen to on the Order 66 podcast: http://podbay.fm/show/276381727/e/1411363860?autostart=1

The hosts analyze the talent tree and discuss the different thief characters you can construct using it. (Essentially, you have a street thief if you stick to the two leftmost columns, and a second-story person/cat burglar if you go with the two rightmost). But I never listen to Order 66.
