Question about refreshing cards

By Ezuna, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

O first dumb question :

During the refreshing phase - does everything get refreshed if it's been used? Or are there are some items that once used are discarded until re-obtained?

Are only spells re-freshable and everything else is a discard after use?

Thanks

Hi, Ezuna!

All exhausted cards are refreshed during upkeep. And it's obligatory to refresh them, unless stated otherwise. These cards include all spells and certain other items that were exhausted on previous turn. It is clearly stated on the card, whether it has to be exhausted in order to be used.

Enjoy Arkham Horror! :)

Hi metal thanks for the reply! I think I've incorrectly worded my question though - what I meant was - do I hold on to all cards? So over the course of a game am I expecting to see them build up - the ones I use and refresh continually along with the ones I'm saving for later?

Or are there some that are used, then returned to the pile, kind of like a use only once kind of item?

Thanks

Yes, they build up, unless the wording on a card says 'discard after use'. If so, return such card to the bottom of respective deck. On the other hand, if it says 'return the card to the box', than the card leaves the game and cannot be obtained again later.

Some cards read "exhaust this card to do that check. If you pass, gain XY and discard the card" or similar. As a general rule of the thumb, all cards that are "discard after use" have the discard keyword clearly worded on them.

During the game, similarly to in an RPG experience, it's likely that you pile up some good items. Or you lose some of them. And that's good, because the game gets harder with the passing of time (more monsters around, more difficult tasks to pass and so on)

Hope this covers your question :)

Perfect thank you very much! Much appreciated :)
