Rogue Sqn - where are they?

By Capt Green, in X-Wing

I know a lot of you will be dying to tell me that they were reformed into Red Sqn, which features in the game, but the game is set in and around the original trilogy, of which Rogue Sqn featured heavily.

A lot of ships have had some loving recently either via aces packs or the upcoming S&V or the Raider, but the X-Wing has been ignored (additional pilots aside) my questions,

Will we see Rogue Sqn, if so which ships (mainly flew X's) and could it be FFG's way to 'fix' the X?

We've seen some of Rogue Squadron, but certainly not all. Ibtisam is flying a b-wing in the game and Tycho is in an a-wing, but Wedge, Jek, and Wes are all there already. However, if you've followed the comic book series at all, you know that Fel defects to Rogue Squadron and I'd love to see a 'rebel' Fel. People's brains would explode...

1. "X" doesn't need fixing, please guys, you are really killing me with this!

2. we actually do have a lot of Rogues ingame atm: Wedge, Tycho, Luke, Biggs, Porkins, Dreis, Corran, Hobbie, Ibtisam, but I'm all for a Rogues pack with new cards in X-wings for Tycho, Corran, and Ibtisam, and more pilots like Ooryl, Gavin, and Asyr.

EDIT: You should also note that it is the other way around, Red Squadron was formed into Rogue Squadron

Biggs, Porkins and Dreis never flew for Rogue Squadron, being dead and all.

Luke and Wedge count Red Squadron as Rogue Squadron.

In the original trilogy, didn't Rogue _Group_ just fly snow speeders?

Rogue squadron was a thing that happened after Endor and therefore outside of the game's time period. But then again, so was the E wing so maybe not the most convincing argument.

I don't think the X-wing needs fixing.

Rogue group is Rogue squadron. They used the Red squadron callsigns at Endor as a memorial to the Battle of Yavin, and the games time frame is the Galactic Civil War, not the movies ( which of course do take place in the galactic civil war)

I would be surprised if the next Aces box didn't include a Rogue squadron title for an X-wing.

Yeah, both the book series and the comic series really see Rogue Squadron as the evolution of Red Squadron.

Oh, I get the EU lore behind Rogue Squadron, but I think we out to prepare ourselves that it may no longer exist, and there is no evidence of it's existence in the original trilogy.

They can have my EU when they pry it from my cold, dead hands ;-)

Or a high PS EPT pilot.

Um..battle of hoth? Doesnt Luke say something like "Rogue group, use your harpoons and tow cables..."

Rogue group was not rogue squadron. Several squadrons (3 iirc) were quickly reformed into rogue group, one of the squadrons was called Rogue Squadron. Officially, Biggs, Garven and Porkins were not part of Rogue squadron, but Wedge considered the Red Squadron at the battle of Yavin, to be the start of Rogue Squadron - Which was formed right after BoY, at the same time the Red Squadron was retired.

The rest is pretty much correct. Note though, the call sign lived for a long time, I remember Jaina Solo being a part of it. Which is clearly not part of the GCW time frame.

Yeah that could work but if we are looking to update the existing and beloved named pilots, a title would be more inclusive.

I've said this before, but I'd really really like to see them do "squadron" cards. It would be a card that you could "buy" for a set point cost. It would restrict you in what ships you could take, but grant them all special benefits.

Example:

Red Squadron: 5 Points

Restrictions: Garven Dreis, Wedge Antilles, Jek Porkins, Luke Skywalker, Biggs Darklighter, Red Squadron Pilot

Benefit: Ignore Garven Dreis's special ability and replace with: whenever Garven spends a focus token you may place 1 focus token on each friendly ships on the board.

Or something like that. Those of you familiar with Warmachine know precisely where I'm stealing this idea from.

Point is, you could easily do something similar with Rogue Squadron. Simply restrict it to all pilots who were part of rogue squdaron in the lore and give them some ability.

Squadron or formation cards would be interesting mechanic. However, I think FFG wants to encourage diversity as much as possible.

Hence the point costs. Combined with the restrictions on the type of ship you can take, you'd be sacrificing a lot to take a squadron card. I feel like unless FFG really screwed the pooch on balancing the squadron cards, most people would still opt to go free-form with their squadron. The squadron cards would really be a shout out to the lore enthusiasts who'd like to lay down a squadron right from the movies without putting themselves at a pretty hefty disadvantage.

I actually like this idea. Maybe not the specific example you gave but I think you're on to something. Having a global boon would be balanced with a point cost and the fact you have to take only 1 type of ship which makes you less flexible. It would definitely please th lore and fluff guys!

yeah, I'm right there with you. Tier forces for a squadron based on what is taken. that sounds pretty cool, and would make for more thematic games. Imagine a VT-49 led by oicunn themed to what his personal escorts are vs the rogue squadron, blue squadron, gold, chartreuse or even plaid squad or whatever else the rebels name themselves... terrorists don't have names in my empire.

"deep in space oicun picks u something on the long range radar...." that kind of thing...i like the idea.

A Rebel Ace's Rogue Squadron box with an X-wing and E-wing?

I know they flew X's most of the time, but I just want an excuse to have a generic E-wing with EPT damnit!! :P

A rogue Sqn pilot with an EPT or a title that gives something (aka advance fix) would be pretty good as well

Only if we get an Imperial version of Han and Kyle.
