How Radical is your group?

By Santiago, in Dark Heresy

Hi,

With the Radical book coming out, how radical is your group?

My group is starting to pass into the gray area...

Vanaras (the Adapt):

Wise, smart, pretty much screwed in the head and the party leader.
They captured a Logician Ashen Tear Assassin and decided to interrogate him, since the Adept just entered Chirurgeon so he thought, since he is already lying in the bath tub, lets remove his kidneys for safe measure and put them on the edge of the bath for intimidation. Since he didn't have any aneasthetics he did it without. (gained 4 insanity points)

Silon (The Techpriest, follower of Thule):

He liked the cybernetics the Ashen Tear Assassin had so he wanted to re-use them, no point of throwing them away (baby, bathwater etc.).
Most of them were pretty safe, the Psyker got the Lungs, the Assassin the Eyes but he took the MIU which I warned him about.
So now he has a heretical MIU connected to his brain which will screw him later on in the campaign.

Callidai (Moritat Assassin):

Well as mentioned before she got the eyes but not after having sex with one of my main antagonists, a Silicum Animus (Logician) who is almost perfectly human.
She managed to make an Ally of a Mysterious Eldar and is on a constant killing spree.

Regis (Psyker):

He is just mad, insanely religious and dangerous for his surroundings, every time he roles a "9" on the activation roll for a psychic power he rolls 75+ and gets to roll on the next table, most of the time he dissappears for 1d10 rounds.
But he stocking up on Insanity and Corruption.

Gaius (Guardsman, Mara Landing Massacre survivor):

A country hick, pretty innocent still...

As of now we have several groups, based on our first groups acolytes who all became Inquisitors themselves. But I can give a quick run-down of the background and the group my Inquisitor has:

Inquisitor Varnias Tybalt (Ordo Xenos)

My first PC in Dark Heresy, the only one who went truly radical to save his soul. He began as a Tech-Priest previously involved somehow in the Malygrisian Tech heresy as one of the hunting factions. He came into contat with Inqusitor Vownus Kaede and served under him along with the rest of the groups first PC's for a few years until that fateful day when they were ordered to infiltrate an auction in the house of Dust and Ash. Where he somehow procured a Halo Device and put it on (unkowingly what it was of course). A few months passed and Varnias became aware of what he had done, but chose to hide his "affliction" from the others and doing further research upon himself, hopefully finding an answer to escape the device attatched to his throat. His hopes were answered one day when the cell was tasked with hunting down an infamous heretek called Magos Vathek, who had recently been seen on Ambulon (Scintilla). Having known a great deal of this Magos Vathek in the past, Varnias knew that he could provide all the help Varnias needed to escape the soul-destroying effects of the Halo Device. After a hectic chase over Ambulon that eventually led to the cell having to jump off the walking city onto an ore train departing towards Gunmetal City, they eventually caught up with Vathek and brought him to their master. Inquisitor Vownus Kaede had in mind to interrogate Vathek, but then give him over to the Adeptus Mehanicus care (for diplomatic reasons, since the AdMech wanted to bring this arch-heretek to their own form of justice).

The acolytes along with Inquisitor Kaede brought Vathek to the secret Adeptus Mechanicus prison known as Sheol 17, where they tried their best to interrogate Vathek (being the undead abomination he is, normal interrogation methods had little effect). During that time Varnias Tybalt, along with the Technographer Venus (a woman who were to become Tybalt's very first Acolyte) broke Vathek out of prison, and sabotaged the other shuttles in the hangar bay so no one could give immediate pursiut. Vownus Kaede and the remaining acolytes feeling betrayed by Varnias immediately sent an astropathic message for a ship they could use to hunt Vathek and the supposedly renegade Varnias Tybalt down. Inquisitor Kaede had to leave for Scintilla so he tasked the remaining acolytes in hunting down their former comerade. Their pursiut eventually led them to a seemingly abandoned orbital station within the Hippocrasian Agglomeration, which Vathek and Tybalt were using as a base for a most arcane techno-sorcerous ritual that involved separating Varnias Tybalts brain from his infected body and interring it in another more "pure" body. The ritual was almost at its completion when the acolytes barged in, all that remained was for Varnias Tybalt to die in order to fulfill his cybernetic resurrection. The Halo Device having corrupted Varnias flesh in most hideous ways turning him into a formidable monster, he attacked the remaining acolytes begging them to kill him before his sanity left him completely. A fierce battle ensued but the remaining acolytes eventually managed to slay the corrupted former Techpriest. In that instant the techno-ritual began, a tractor beam lifting his broken and alien influenced body high into the air to large embarcing machinery in the ceiling. Hundreds of servo skulls swarmed around him, methodically removing his brain from the corrupted body, whilst inserting it in a new body. The Halo Device, along with Varnias newly completed form eventually fell to the floor. Before either Magos Vathek or the Acolytes could take the Halo Device, a unit of Deathwatch marines teleported into the operating hall, along with Inquisitor Arcturos of the Ordo Xenos (who Varnias Tybalt had previously had contact with). The Inquisitor ordered the acolytes to stand down, while he confiscated the Halo Device and brought the still unconscious body of Varnias Tybalt and the you Technographer woman with him as his prisoners. That was the last the acolytes were to see of Varnias Tybalt.

Years passed, and although Inquisitor Arcturos knew that he should execute Varnias for his blatant disregard of Inquisitorial orders and letting a known arch-heretek slip away (Vathek escaped during the techno-ritual), he could not help but being a little impressed by Varnias resourcefulness, and although he commited several heretical acts his goal was always to prevent his own soul from being claimed by an alien entity. Arcturos, being a prominent member of the Xeno Hybris faction (whose methods and philosophy are deemed by some to be quite radical), he could relate to Tybalt. But rather than setting the Techpriest free, he took him under his own wing as an Interrogator, and during the years that passed Varnias Tybalt rose to become an Inquisitor himself.

His current Acolytes consists of two Techpriests. One being the woman who helped him free Vathek and conduct the vital techno-ritual, another being a mind-wiped Malygrisian tech heretic. One Adept with a background in the Void Commercia, one cybernetically resurrected Arbitrator from Sinophia (a construction by Varnias himself), one mutant penal legionnaire from Fedrid and lastly a very old Sanctioned Psyker who currently rests on something like 30 corruptuion points due to perils of the warp.

So yeah, that particular Inquisitor is a radical one if you ask me. gran_risa.gif

The players in my group have gamed together for many years so I can guess - as much as they can get away with! They're composed of a feral world sanctioned psyker, a noble cleric Redemtionist firebrand, Imperal world Arbitrator, noble assassin, and a Battlefleet Calixis Arbitrator. They have the typical morale compass of CHAOTIC GREEDY. Im looking foreward to the game mechanics of corruption and insanity.

One player has an unhealthy love for the Eldar (20 years of playing the cheating things) and will jump on the first Xeno tech he finds. That Im sure of. As for the rest Im excited to see how far they will push it- and I havent introduced an Inquisitor yet as they're currently tasked with investigating the lower levels of a hiveworld. Would be funny to saddle them with a Puritan (to me) but Im leaving that door open to see how the Redemptionist plays his Cleric (beyond being a Pyro with his flamer!).

How Radical is my group?

Well, the adept is a palsy stricken dark-hearted s.o.b. who will twitch, stutter, and shoot you just as soon as look at you unless you have some juicy forbidden lore at which time, you have his full and undivided attention. He is building up a small Library of the Damned collecting books "too heretical for other's eyes" and, just as soon as he gets occult, warp, or daemonology up to +10, he'll be all over sorcery (he's got the books with the know-how in them... he just needs to understand what they're saying) like white on rice.

The scum and only personable member of the crew couldn't give a rat's ass about duty, honor, the Emperor, or any of that noise. He's over being grateful for having been pulled from the crush-zone of Sebillus now and is itching to be out from under anyones thumb. He's the greatest advocate for just killing their master's interrogator who is with them and pissing off to Emperor knows where. they have the money now, the ship, so why not? And why should he care about this heresy thing, or any of that? pack on to that the fact that he's just now figured out who the hell this Drusus guy is that everyone keeps mentioning and still can't figure out what all the fuss is about.

Their master's Interrogator who is with them only has three modes of being currently; unconscious, high, or insane. He's addicted to obscura and pain killers and when not on them, has a bad tendency to get it in his head that it would be a smashing idea to vivisect what ever moving screaming thing is closest. He may not be long for this universe as he's currently strapped down to a cot in the medicae facilities aboard a xenos lovin' heretic's ship that they commandeered and are now working closely with. He's kept on that cot due to a bit of possession he recently suffered from, but thanks to a unsanctioned witch, he's doing much better now. Unfortunately, it also left him with an incredible hankering for jiggly bits of human flesh and the inability to digest or process any foods or nutrients not derived strait from living, bleeding, flesh (and some odd teeth like growths in his upper digestive tract). The group knows about the teeth but not the special dietary needs and, as such, the man is starving to death. The Adept is working his arse off to find a way to save his life, mutation or no.

Oh, and there's that rogue witch I mentioned. Ya, she's the most pious of the lot of them and the most dedicated to the Emperor. She's starting to think they may not be the pure vassals of His will that she had fist thought when she learned of their affiliations with the Holy Ordos. She, the rouge unsanctioned witch, is starting to become worried for their souls and fears what very little she's learned of their radical leanings. Did i mention she's a rogue psyker?!

And finally, the icing on the heretical cake -Zerbe attempted to have their Inquisitor killed and believes he succeeded. Though his assassin did succeed in cutting the man in half, the adept managed to, in one insane show of uncharacteristic balls, save his life and use the last bit of a heretical xenos balm to heal over his wounds before the Insane Interrogator called in some favors from the Mechanicus and had him smuggled to the laths for rebuilding. The cell is currently laying low and on the run from Zerbe's men as their master's network gets uprooted and purged by bolter and flamer. They're still not sure why, but they have some ideas...

So, ya, that's how radical they are.

Okay well just for some variety, how about an answer in the opposite direction:

We have the Investigator, who desires nothing more than to purge heretics and follow in the hard line puritanical footsteps of our Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor. Of course, it is a little questionable whether he'll hit a glass ceiling since our Inquisitor has a reputed preference for psykers, being one himself, and being all about the psychic future of mankind.

Or the Sororitas. The Sororitas who had to pretty much be ordered by her superiors not to just do away with the psyker, and whose first answer to nearly every problem is "burn them in the Emperor's cleansing flame." She's trying a little bit too hard to make up for her decadent youth, methinks..

Then there's the Metallican gunslinger. Given free reign he might love to try out some of the more questionable technology we come across, but is wise enough to know he'd be subject to the whims of the more zealous members of the group if they even suspected.

How about the mind-cleansed adept? Well.. he does seem to have a disturbing knowledge of many heretical subjects, and his ability to easily manipulate some forbidden arceotech we found recently raised several eyebrows. Alas, whatever he may have been or known seems to have been solidly overwritten with a very pious personality, who was aghast that we would leave a planet without trying to shine the light of the Inquisition into every corner of it, even if there were six of us and an army of them.

The assassin? Well, he's new. Too soon to tell. Radical, puritan, none of it seems to mean much to him as long as he is providing more blood sacrifices to the Emperor.

Okay, the psyker. Surely we can count on the psyker to lean towards the forbidden? Except she'd sooner jump from the spires of the Tricorn than disappoint our Inquisitor, and is constantly berating herself for the slightest slip of control. While suffering the slight "is it now?" syndrome that comes with divination, she's been known to start complaining about slippery slopes even before the Sororitas.

So we are good little children. Too many people who'd rat one another out to our puritan master otherwise.

The group is comparatively 'mixed all-sorts'

The Cleric, is an obnoxious prick with an annoying sense of self-superiority to remind everyone else that they are but unworthy scum and filth in the eyes of the emperor and is essentially the worst elements of puritan + flamer. But at least he's not a redemptionist... yet.

Bad Cop, is just bad. An Arbitrator with a seedy history of being an ex-ganger and the pragmatic morality of an alley cat when it comes to dealing with the underworld. He's slightly more subtle, though a bit of a ***** really, whenever he gets a bit flakey the assassin ninja stabs him with some frenzon so he can get on with some good old fashioned attrocities (and self loathing after) Probably class him as a puritan, he tries to do the right thing.

Worse Cop, is really bad. An Arbitrator from Volg and about as subtle as a shock baton to the face and spitting out chipped teeth, he's selfish, lies, steals, extorts and maims. These high levels of antisocial personality disorder are just part of life really in Volg, anywhere else they just serve him well by being more horrible and feared than anyone else. Definately Radical.

The Psyker, mind scrubbed and has been through a couple of 'reboots' for sticking his nose into things he shouldn't and somehow managing to survive. He's well on his way to getting his first malignancy or minor mutation from huge amounts of Perils, burning fate points to avoid possession and for all his soon to be ***** warts, is a lynchpin of the group, big bag of heals and lightning bolts. Would class him as a fence sitter.

The Guard, he's an ADD mind scrubbed guardsman with the same dark, terrible origins as the psyker. He'll literally swing between shooting things with a heavy stubber or go run off and go ride quad bikes (...no I'm not kidding) unless told exactly what to do.

The Priest, mostly a part-time player so it hasn't developed much, I guess being a tech priest he's a radical.

Their Inquisitor though they've figured out has a strong leaning towards being a Polypsykana, often having them snaffle off the odd high powered psyker before the black ships get them and rescuing books before the puritans burn them, he's being a good boy though being under the close scruitany of the resident Segementum overseer checking out the little backwater sector called Calixis and why its not meeting its tithes in certain areas. What they haven't figured out and will probably never figure out is his deeply hidden Istvaanian tendancies which are more of an subconscious compulsion rather than an active modus operandi. He's actually got a little bit of a soft spot for his select, very small groups of acolytes and wont waste them on obvious suicide missions having recently lost dozens of them- ordered by the Segmentium Overseer wanting an investigation into the Malfian sub-sector tracking down Temple-Tendancies there.

There are two NPC/PC's there to fill out the group 'where needed' in the form of a charismatic assassin which is the epitomy of Harkonnen creed, a decadent, brutal adamantine fist in a velvet glove crushing the weak into obedience... with a healthy amount of venomous contempt for **** near everyone whos social standing is of the lower nobility or their lessers (pretty much everyone). The kind of person you call upon when collateral casualties really aren't an issue, need a virus bomb hurled into the lower hive, burn down a settlement with its residents locked in the local church or lining up the local nobility up against the wall and machinegunning them down and have a morality problem doing it yourself- call the assassin.

"Blaze" was delivered to the party by a Culexus assassin as 'a weapon' and is basically a bipedal artillery piece. Freshly mind scrubbed and floats around through life either being completely manic 25% of the time, won't speak to anyone 25% of the time and the other half of her waking life could best be described as batsh*t crazy... the PC's have had ample oppertunity walking past the sectors 'Most Wanted' posters and not really managed to put 2 & 2 together as to who the weird little teenage girl really is. So I'll just have the witch hunters turn up, she'll burn down a few suburbs in the process of getting rid of them and maybe they'll figure it out lengua.gif

My online group isn't that radical at all really, but our tech priest is rather....lax with most Mechanicus creed....Which might end well for him, might end badly, but he has a suprisingly firm grasp on his humanity, which is good :)

IRL group, one of the players DEMANDS a Tau rifle. Radical? Yes.

So far? Fairly Puritan, although the psyker was probably only a few tiny chromosomes away from being declared a filthy mutant (due to a player misunderstanding, he's only 2'10" (roughly 85cm) tall). Incompetent is another matter- during the last session they destroyed so much of Ambulon that they're getting a babysitter in the form of an Interrogator.

Said Interrogator is more bad-ass than them in both skills and gear. I expect them to try and either bribe, frame, rob or kill him before the scenario's end, so they can get their hands on his (technically illegal, and possibly minor techno-heretical) modified Angelus- especially because there is a new player just joined with a BS 73 Guardsman (completely honestly come by- very lucky witnessed roll during char gen, 1600 xp spent on BS advances, and the divination 'to war is human'). So probably somewhat Radical if they try and do that...

Aside from that, we have an incompetent Scum whose player didn't have the intestinal fortitude to make it past char gen (and so is a space character)- currently undergoing surgery for trying to hide a stolen assault cannon up his rectum; a Cleric whose player had to leave for Uni (so also a spare character)- his role is shiny clanking furniture, head-smashing for goodness, and uplifting quotes about minor Imperial saints; an Arbitrator who has little-to-no conception of subtlety, but appears surprisingly adept at hacking (so much so, the players tried o have him hack the Oracle Ocular. I said no), fairly strait-laced, but could well be tempted to the left-hand path with the right temptation; and finally a noble Assassin: party role- passport, chauffeur (owns an Ecclesiarchy-flagged starship) amasec-drinker and duellist (would be sniper, but the others won't let him). He will turn to the dark side. It's just a matter of when...

Alasseo,

Is my math off? 20 base BS, plus 20 on the roll is 40 BS, then add 20 for the 4 advances and 3 for the divination totals 63 BS. happy.gif What did I miss?

-=Brother Praetus=-

possibly a +5 homeworld bonus (tho' I don't recall a +5BS), and possibly a +10 from some piece of cyber.

Nope, it appears my math is off. I should have caught that when they submitted their character. It should indeed be BS 63, thanks. Mind you, I expect the player in question to cotton on to the uses of Aim, Semi/Full Auto and/or red-dot sights fairly quickly, not to mention the possibilities inherent in targeters and bionics

My group mainly they are soso but the NPCs are more radical than horus taking a dump in the golden throne.

The inquisitor is around 700 years old and looks 21 due to a daemonic pact with his assassain/bodygaurd (the demonhost goes between a girl and guy so the pcs dont really know who they will go with) to find the one chick he loves (an insane redheaded assassin that will die towards the end for her slaneshi backround) he loves any tech watsoever and will mix and match parts of every tech you can find to create what the mechanicus would simpley call fubar monsters that even we cant stop (namley his pet gun (its a demon)) frankly he will kill whatever he wants to achieve whatever he needs to do. and seeing as the last mission involves invading the Sollex tech fortress to take out the main adversary? yeah hes gna do anything.

the daemonhost was introduced when my inquisitors noble family was killed by the inquisition for making him/her and stuck with him since agging him on to do what he wants though will eventualy collect his soul in the end he/she will do whatever they wish seeing as they are walking corruption even occasionaly trying to assassinate my pcs for kicks.

the main adversary is a mindwiped tech priest with a heretical data ghost inside him (i dont remember the name but its in CA) trying to turn the entire calaxis sector into a Logis Daemonicus. he is as of right now trying to raise an army of undead on a cemetary world with the help of forrbiden tech.

though at the end of my campaign since i explore the heretical side of the inquisition on this i will allow my characters to go through an eldar warp gate (artefact in the sollex fortress) and join some eldar on their expiditions so they will all be radical by the end.
