Am I doing this right?

By kikaida2, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi All,

-

New to the game and have a few under my belt.

-

My question is....It appears that after the first or second round, all your time is either spent fighting monsters or try to close gates (2 wasted turns in other dimensions). The further the game progresses, the more frantic this gets *but* the issue is....You never really have the time to stop off and have an encounter without it feeling like a completely wasted turn.

-

Is this right? With gates opening every round for the most part, when do you get to enjoy getting perks and errata? Seems like a wasted turn when there is so much to keep under control.

-

Also, our games go real quick...With some GOOs having only 10 or so doom tokens to awake, that is essentially 5 turns for 2 players...Factor in 2 turns stuck in another dimension, that boils down to 3 full turns per player....To close a ton of gates and kill a lot of monsters before the GOO awakens? Something doesn't seem right here.

I'm a little worried by the 10 doom = 5 turns x 2 player... you are resolving only ONE Mythos / turn, right? You resolve all the phases for all the investigators (hence, if you play with 4 investigators, you perform the upkeep for all the four investigators, then the movement for all four, then the encounters, and finally the eventual Other World encounters) and then there's a Mythos Phase and you resolve only one card regardless of how many are playing

Thanks for your input Julia, seems you have a good grip of this game and I was looking forward to your reply.

How we are doing it is as follows (condensed)

Player 1:

1. Upkeep

2. Movement....If gate, get sucked through, if monster fight/flee, if nothing draw card or board wording

3. Mythos....open gate spawn monster etc.

Player 2:

Same as above.

So with two players, after 5 turns each, that's 10 doom tokens if every gate opens.

We seem to reach the monster limit very quickly too. Think I'm missing something here.

Ok, gotcha. You don't have the correct sequence done. Every turn is structured into two macro-phases: an investigators phase, where all your characters make something, and a Mythos phase, where the game is given a chance to counter your actions. Basically, let's say you play with four investigators. The correct turn sequence is:

1. Upkeep: perform Upkeep for Investigators 1, 2, 3, 4. Then move to:

2. Movement: Investigators 1 moves, then investigator 2 and so on until you've resolved the movement of all the characters in play. Then it's time for:

3. Arkham Encounters phase: each investigator in play resolves one arkham encounter (if there's a gate, he enters the OW, if he's at a location, he draws and resolves the encounter, if he's in a street area, nothing happens). Once you're done with this, you move to:

4. Other World encounters phase: each investigator in play actually in an OW area draws and resolve an OW encounter.

Then

5. Mythos phase: you resolve one (and only one) Mythos card

so, five turns for two investigators means 5 Mythos. Five turns for 8 investigators means again 5 Mythos.

Hope this helps!

Ah, that makes much more sense! Can't wait to play it right.

Thanks soo much Julia!

My pleasure helping! Enjoy the game, and if you have any other doubt, just ask :)

No wonder you thought the game was too fast-paced Kikaida! Just thinking about how to manage all those mythos cards is horrifying, haha. Kudos to you for realizing something was wrong! I'm sure you will have much more enjoyment now.

Thanks Soakman, getting ready to play again tonight.

Another quick question...When playing solo, obviously it would be wise to play 2 or more investigators correct? Otherwise it would be as it was, a gate/slaughter fest with a mythos card every turn.

Yeah. The less investigators you play, the easier is to go to Final Battle. Suggested number of investigators to learn the game: 3 or 4. In this way, you are not snowed under with too many things to consider, but you can see some nice interactions, and you can have sealers and monster whackers and learn how to swap roles among the characters.

Let us know how it goes :)
