I got into Star Wars: X-Wing because it was pre-painted. One of the LGS I used to game at has more painting snobs than I'm accustom too. I reluctant to get this and not be satisfied since I don't paint.

There are lots of people around who provide painting services, if you're willing to pay for it.
In the end though, as much as it's in the "miniatures" category, it's a board game, and having it painted is absolutely completely optional.

I have a similar crowd at my LGS. Fortunately, the fine folks at CSI don't care if I paint my minis or not
Or you can always use WotC minis in place of the ones that come with the game. They're already painted and ready to do battle

You are right, I started to paint them and I have finished the wookie and the probe droids and I'm already tired.
For those that don't like to paint. Take a look at the Army Painter style of painting. It's a very basic and simple style of painting to make your miniatures look decent and playable.
I personally prefer to paint my models to the best of my capabilities but if I need to get something out fast and dirty this style of painting works.
I'm a paint snob to a degree......if people want to play with unpainted miniatures fine, but none of mine touch a gaming table until completely painted.
Board games are the exception as you can't play it without the pieces, mine will be fully painted and some converted (imperial officers) to break up the pointy finger pose.
I'm hoping to put together tutorials as I go.
Being this way does causes problems as I'll be long dead before I paint everything I have.

The ONLY times you should paint is if you enjoy it, or the rules call for it.
the only way I would ever paint mine would be to just did them all in black paint and call them "Black Hole [insert name here]" (like the Black Hole Stormtroopers)

It's pretty typical for official miniatures tournaments to require the minis to be painted.
In situations where the tournaments are in a place where they are trying to attract more customers (like a convention), then I think that actually makes sense, but generally, I don't really think it should be a requirement.

Yes and must have at least three different colors on them not including the base.

I don't mean to antagonize them (I paint my stuff frequently, TBH,) but I don't believe in telling people how to spend their free time. I like to see painted models, and I do think they enhance the experience, but if you're not into it, you're not into it. That's cool, we can still play.
Stunami... I totally agree. I also paint my miniatures... But I agree with your point... Why try to tell anybody how to have fun? It's certainly not my job.
First of all Imperial Assault is a board game because it uses a board. It's NO miniature game like WH40k or X-Wing. Even if FFG want us to believe that. Only reason for this is that board games pieces like i.e. miniatures cannot be sold for a price like 10-20 bucks a piece. Prices for minis are open ended as GW well demonstrates AND people are willing to pay. So FFG is taking the middle row here.
Yes IA is also sort of a TT but all you "paint your miniatures or leave" people out there, keep in mind it is still a board game too. It attracts board game players who might not want to paint, glue and convert and all that stuff. Forcing them into painting is stupid and offending and I hope the day will come where you Paint-nazis have no one left to play with
I have some decend paintet 40K and Infinity minis in my cabinets myself and love to paint and play with them but I think I'm not gonna paint my AI minis. It is not about the time or the effort. When I paint them, I have to put them in a seperate foam-box because the coating chips and cracks when you just throw them in a bag with other minis. I like to have all pieces for a board game in one place, better jet one box. Still I can see the base game box not fittin all the stuf FFG is about to release and when the time has come to put all those minis into a seperate box, I maybe start to paint them too
I don't mind for a boardgame suchs as talisman, or imperial assault. But when it comes to TT wargames it always rankles me whenI see a nice terrain with cool scenery and a fully painted army on one side and a bunch of unpainted, not undercoated (and in one case) barely assembled bunch of minis.

This is my very problem. I own boxes of Geo-Hex terrain. Hills, cliffs, slopes, enough for two ping-pong tables with stuff left over. But I don't paint, I don't have the patience or the skill. But when I played 40k I loved the mini's. So a little middle ground here. To be honest (40k Epic BTW not just Titans but Marines and Guard) one side was painted with fine detail, belt buckles, bolts, washed, air brushed, etc. My side, the mini's that were painted which was not all of them, were spray painted blue then sprayed again with gold flakes.
I like mini games, I enjoyed 40k Epic (the first few versions of the rules); but for me to play my figures went unpainted. One store would not let me play there. No problem we played elsewhere and sometimes played games with all 6 regiments that lasted days. What a blast, painted or not. We had fun.
P.S. now I have tons of Geo-Hex stored away and I don't play 40k any longer.

Lets break it down, You buy this game because you like the look of it, lets look the average disposable income in the grand scheme of things £60-£70 is not going to be a big hit to someone with a well paid job, factor in someone that is say a child or a student who finances are limited that is a big outlay right there.
Now unless your good, confident and happy painting you wont do it simply because in the blank state they are in there isn't any way of spoiling the mini and you can quite happily play the game with your friends.
The suggestion to pay someone to paint the models, OK say you buy the paints from games workshop lets say average of £3 per paint your needing base coat / primer Red, Black, White, Metal Grey, Green, Blue, Skin Tone, Brown etc so lets say that all comes up to another £30-£40 then you would be looking £15-£20 per model for a good job to be done maybe more.
Before this poor chap can sit down he as spent the better half of £300 to be to go near a game board.
I like to see fully painted models as much as the next guy, I come under the cat that I cant paint and wont try because I would more likely ruin the model, I am lucky in that a few of my friends are decent mini painters and can help me out.
But FFG made a game with unpainted minis and purposely put stickers to represent squad they should then allow the tournament to be used with the stuff that come with the box, and for those that are snobs when it comes to it, your there to have fun, so is the other guy so what makes you any better to have fun? who knows the unpainted dude might be the best player you have ever come across.
My biggest concern is how to make bases for models. If you screw it up you can't get another model unless you buy a new game. I mean I want some spaceship bases. Desert and mud bases are easy.
