I tried out this build today for the first time.

Gunner

This was the single most brutal thing I have seen in x-wing so far. I had a few ships in support but there was very little left for them to do.

Ruthlessness combined with double Vader from the gunner was more damage than I have ever seen one ship deal.

Im still looking for the best support to run with this build, currently thinking of a kitted out Whisper. Though I'll probably add either Mara Jade or Rebelcaptive to Oicunn.

Hm, I don't know. I faced one the other week, and Vader basically committed suicide.

I mean, sure, the Decimator has a lot of hull points, but if I'm flying a crap load of TIE Bombers (which I generally do), then it's going to take a LOT of force choking to get rid of my stuff, and you have only got so much hull on that Decimator and no green dice.

The point being - there are builds against which a DeciVader is a really bad choice, and I flew that list.

Vadermator vs Phantom. I just love force choking those little cloaking deviants!

But yes, has its weaknesses, i've flown it purely for my own debased satisfaction

The key is knowing when to use Vader and when not to. Though I admit a large number of bombers would suck for this build. Gunner with Ruthless is still a lot of damage, even without Vader.

A smart phantom player would stay away from vader and pick off other ships

Flew against a Decivader + Krasis build the other week. Took it down with a hlc Outrider fringer, keyan and tarn. Good times.

Which is total damage of gunner attack + 1 (Ruthlessness) + 2 [crit] (Vader). That's a lot of damage.

Entirely depends on what you are flying against. High agi glass cannons will suffer against decivader. But for example B-wings couldn't care less about it.

On a decimator, vader is to be used sparingly. You want to use it to deal extra damage to phantoms, interceptors, or land crits(specifically after all shields are down) on annoy or powerful named pilots.

You can also make a case for doing it to deal the last 2 damage to yourself that you need to activate kenkirk, or isaards ability if no one else has arc on your for the round so that you have it next round. Especially if you think your going to be focus fired. But I think thats sort of a rare circumstance.

I have to be honest, i wouldnt run Jerrjerrod if my Slave 1 was here (its on its way) so i could use outflank. Its pretty much point for point Michael's list from his channel save for the jammer and jerrjerrod in place of outflank.

Now that i have tried it, man, jammer feels to me like a good card. I love using my big ramming ship as cover for the ties while they move into position with 4 evade dice and an evade token if no barrel roll was necessary. My opponent often stated that it was frustrating because he never felt he could get shots on the ties that were worthwhile, and so he ended up hammering on the decimater knowing it was there to die and take him with it, and essentially, he ended up shooting it up, the decimater next turn bumped a b wing, shot a hwk 290, got a damage through, ruthlessessed the b wing again, vadered the hwk 290, and my ties got in and got behind the 290 (which had an autoblaster on it, so the arc didnt matter except for pumping my own attacks) and managed to deal another 3 damage, 2 of which were critical hits to the b wing. it was over fast for him. after that he had an a wing, a severely damaged b wing, and a hwk 290 that had a crit on it with engine problems, and i just killed the b wing next turn, and lost the decimater, but ended up getting shots on the a wing that turn and finished it off too.

at the end of the turn, he had a critical damaged hwk 290 with like 7 billion focus on it throwing 3 dice and i had backstabber, mauler and dark curse closing in on him. it was over pretty quickly.

what i dont like about the list is that i feel many times that if i am not bumping models intentionally with oicunn, im just wasting him, but i feel like i want to use it more to just make sure that my ties get into position, so im not sure the vader build is the right one to be playing, but man, when you do bump, ruthless, vader, and shoot in the same turn it is crazy powerful the amount of damage you can throw out.

i do have a question as the resident newbie. Does a crit count as two damage? i always thought it counted as one, and then you have the effect of the hit you have to resolve...

Just wait a few more weeks until we can put Vader on the Raider's Bridge...

I believe this is entirely situational as a build.

It is a ship with over half of your squad points that basically commits suicide.

If you face an elite squad of small based ships it could be really awesome, especially if they do fly formation. They usually have few HP and vader is going to shine, no matter what you do to your expensive Decimator.

But if you are facing something with decent hitpoints, especially decent shields, well good luck then, because you're gonna need it!

I see this shine against enemy Phantoms, Corran Horn, Soontir Fel. Although then you would not need ruthlessness really. If you are a bit lucky, you can strip a shield or two by firing, then you vader him and hope for the best.

A swarm will probably eat your Decimator despite Ruthlessness and Vader really fast. But then if you combine it with Whisper you should handle the rest of the swarm pretty well.

You don't want to see B-wings or something like Roark plus double Fringer really. Because they will gun you down in two turns and then it's over!

I also saw Michiel's Channel, but i really think that Mithel plus Ruthlessness is a pretty questionable combo...

It did ok, although I'm not sure i really like that list much. The BWing just took so much damage so quickly, and in the game with both Bwings, the decimator did a good job making sure that the ties made it there alive.

Now, it is worth noting that i think i used Vader once or twice, but not much in either game. He was there to either make sure next turn his target died, or to kill it that turn. I don't know how much i like the "every turn no matter what" mentality with Vader. Im new, but not stupid...thats a lot of points tied up into a self sacrificing strike.

against the BBXX list, or the b wing in general, the bump is really pretty good, and something i learned is that b wings aren't, despite their barrel roll, the most maneuverable things in the universe, so it was pretty eye opening when he had to split his squadron up to get around it based on his position, and that basically committed a tactical sin: dividing your force into smaller chunks vs a numerically superior opponent. Robert E Lee was able to pull it off a few times and made it work, but my opponent want lee, thats for sure, and i sure as hell am not grant, but i was able to being ties to bear to finish off his b wing quickly and drop his a wing, leaving him a support craft.

Either way, i'm not sure the Vader build is really where i want to go, im thinking for my play style, maybe kirk and heals with captive is really better suited to the jammer/cover the ties style of play.
