New to X-wing where to start?

By Surge4tw, in X-Wing

Lol, thank you all for the advice. And trust me, she's well worth it. It's always good to have a good wing man. But better to have a amazing co pilot.

But the next thing on my slate is a second core set or single Tie, or Y wing expansion. But first to learn more about the game and tactics!

The only things you ever regret about buying your first Y-Wing are that you didn't buy one sooner and that you only bought one.

I certainly am reading this.

I've honestly bought more than i'll ever need but i like ships in pairs or fours (wingmen and 'flights')

If i could give any sound advice here, it wouldnt be what to buy next but actually get the most out of what you have.

If you havent already play the scenarios in the core set, also play any in any 'aces' or 'large ship' packs.

Its a very different and very satisfying way to play the game, its like a mini episode of a star wars film and many people totally overlook them* which is a shame as the guys at FFG put a lot of work into making some great narrative games and providing all the tokens you need to play them.

We try and play the scenarios. Many of them purposely set out to show you how to get the best out of a new ship or expansion so are worth giving a go. They also add some fun new rules to break up the 'sameness' of 100 points and six rocks games.

*You'll find the general focus on here is for players with a more 'organised play, optimised list' mindset, which is totally cool but if you want you're games to be steeped in 'star wars lore' you probably will enjoy narrative play more.

Its actually my favorite ship from lore (aside from smuggler ships), I dont know why. I just really like them, As for play wise, I guess I'll have to read up more.

Oh the scenarios are what I look forward to almost the most. Making my own, for instance aswell as sub dividing the game into a multi player aspect which I have read and seen in many variants and aspects.

I hope FF comes out with a small book of scenarios at some point, to mix it up abit, aside form giving a few in the larger packs.

But I will say, a good dog fight is just as apealing. Its like any other game though. 1V1 duels are nice, but a giant fleet fight with a few players is awesome.

Buy her a ring before you go broke buying expansion sets. That's where I would start. Now I get x-wing for Christmas, Father's Day and my birthday, and I fit my own purchases in between. The force is strong...

I'm going to contradict everyone else's "buy her a ring ASAP" advice. Cool as she sounds, make sure you're ready. Have your first incredibly painful fight. Be really sick and see how you treat one another.

Your spouce is your partner, for better _and_ worse. Until you see- really see- the ugliness that is in one another, you're not ready. Once you see that ugliness and are able to say "eh, not a big deal", _then_ put a ring on her finger.

Gadge I was referring to the final frame of the comic strip - didn't you post a pic the other day of you playing x-wing dressed in a TIE pilot outfit against a mate dressed in a rebel flight suit?

yep and i knew thats what you meant, i just added on some extra stuff i was thinking about :)

Girls like corsets.

So if she cuts my hand of with a lightsaber and ask me to rule the universe with her..... What do I do then?

I also just grabbed a HWK and a single Tie fighter. I think im good for now, a nice balance to play with. Plus with the Z-95 and the HWK, I can convert them to scum, when I grab the scum aces pack.

X-Mas?

I get a core set.

Girlfriend gets a corset.

I would be in a real "bind" :P

I would tell you to get one of each small ship and try them out, then move on to the larger ships.

At that point you will understand what you like and dislike.

Personally I did 3 of each with the exceptions of the tie fighter and x-wings I stared with more. If I did it over again I would not change that approach. Most lists only run two of each ship with the exception of the z95, xwings, (maybe a-wing) and tie fighters so collecting at 2 of each is a win win. Plus 2 of each give you all of the upgrade cards you need.

Last look at epics

*edit*

Most played Rebel ship is the x-wing and tie for the imp with the core you have those really the order you get the rest is up to you.

yeah I thought I couldn't go wrong having at least 2 x wings and a handful of basic Tie fighters to start

Further play, I see why. A cheap "zerg" of a few ties can easily wipe a field with the right back up or support.
