Guilty - Kneel a ring character

By FloLeBlanc, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Can I kneel ANY ring character? Also one an opponent controls?

According question to all other cards that state something like "Destroy a location", etc.

I don't know what card you're talking about but if kneeling a character is part of the cost ( "Kneel X to do that" or "Knell X then do that")), you can only pay costs of cards you play with your own cards (Rules or FAQS, can't remember where).

Guilty! says: Kneel 3 influence or kneel a ring character to choose and kill a non-stark character.

Mammoth says: after winning a Military challenge, choose and discard a location from play.

Old Red Priest says: After Old Red Priest is killed, choose and kneel a standing location YOU control if able.

So why is it specifically mentioned that I have to kneel a location I control when the default target is me anyways?

If it is part of a cost you have to kneel one of your characters. Of course, if it is not part of a cost, it has to be specified which character is to be knelt (Old Red Priest example).

To expand on what Castorp is saying, look at the way the three cards you site are phrased:

Guilty! says: " Dominance: Kneel 3 influence or kneel a Noble character to choose and kill a non-stark character."

Mammoth says: " Response: after winning a Military challenge , choose and discard a location from play."

Old Red Priest says: " After Old Red Priest is killed , choose and kneel a standing location you control if able."

Because "Guilty!" is worded in the " do X to do Y" format, X is considered a cost. Y is considered the effect. So kneeling the 3 influence or the Noble character is a cost you must pay in order to be allowed to get the effect of choosing and discarding a non-Stark character. Costs can only be paid with cards/resources that you control. You can't spend your opponent's gold to play cards, you can't trigger effects on cards you don't control, you can't attack or defend with character you don't control and you can't pay costs with resources you don't control. It's just the basic way the game works. Costs can only be paid with cards you control, effects can be applied to any legal card.

For "Mammoth" and "Old Red Priest," which are both templated in a format of " after X , do Y," the lack of the word "to" means that X is a play restriction, not a cost. The Y remains an effect. Your question seems to arise from equating the Y (or effect) in this ability template to the X (or cost) in the ability template on Guilty!

You are not the "default controller" of an effect, but you are the "default controller" of a cost. That's why Guilty! does not need to specify that you must kneel your own Noble character as a cost, but Old Red Priest places an additional limitation on the effect, making you kneel your own location instead of any location.

So mammoth could destroy my opponents locations?

Yes.

And interestingly enough, since all you have to do is win a military challenge, it doesn't matter if you win on attack or defense. It also doesn't matter whether Mammoth is even one of the attackers or defenders in that challenge you win. If Mammoth is in play and you win a military challenge, you can pick any location in play and discard it (unless another card effect stops you).

thank you, I hope they didn't reprint this monster in the LCG *shudder*

Well, Mammoth was part of a promotional, intentionally "broken" deck. It has never been legal for organized/tournament play. I think it's a pretty safe bet that it will not be reprinted into the LCG.
