starting Descent

By guest314224, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi All

just a couple of questions, Is the basic game enough to keep you going for a while? I also like the co op adventures that have been mentioned how may of them are there and do you think FF will publish more of them? and finally what scale is this game 25mm, 32mm ?

thanks

regards Mic

The core game has plenty- a campaign that requires a minimum of 2 runs to play all the quests once, 2 classes and 2 heroes per archetype. The main thing that expansions will get you (other than more quests) is a greater degree of choice in hero, class, and monster.

There are currently 2 co-ops: Forgotten Souls and Nature's Ire. I don't know if there will be more.

I don't know much about miniature scaling, sorry. Heroes are the same size minatures as runewars heroes, if that helps.

I'm not sure exactly what scale the minis are, but the game uses a standard 1 inch square grid and all the minis fit as appropriate, so they should be compatible with most other minis board games, I would think.

minis are more in 25mm, maybe 26

I recommend picking something up to enhance the monster-variety. If you are, after a few games, not sure how much you like the game you can get the conversion kit to add a ton of monsters, so the OL has a truly tactical decision in picking from a big pool of monsters. (You need to proxy these monsterminiatures though). This adds at least 3 monsters to the available monsters each encounter and makes sure that you won't fight against the same monsters over and over again.

Regarding miniature scale, The miniatures are around 30mm from base to head. Keep in mind their head and weapons are very proportional, which means small and authentic in comparison to many other miniatures.

Yeah, the core game is great. Just pick that up and you're good to go.

Depending on how often you play you might want to expand and buy more.

But the core game alone kept me entertained for a year.

thanks for the replies. have just ordered the basic game and forgotten souls. I like the idea of the conversion kit to add proxy monsters.

the conversion kit is useless for monster with forgotten souls. Only heroes may have some use.

I wouldn't recommend the Conversion Kit anyway due to the fact that it makes the game really unbalanced : too many weak and overpowered heroes/monsters, not enough "normal" one...

ok

I think people on this board exagerate the problems of the CK.

Imo (as the OL in nearly every campaign) you need more monsters than the base game offers, to feel like you really got a strategic decision in the beginning of the game. If you are not willing to outright spend ~70$ on Descent expansions and don't even know if you like the game, I recommend getting the CK.

My expirience was that the CK turned a soso game with potential into one of my 2 favorite games.

You get 25 monsters and 48 heroes. A few monsters have been slightly tweaked (they all got buffed in the end, adding a few HP or slightly altering their abilities, nothing you can't easily remember). Some people think that one monster is imbalanced, but that still leaves you with 24 new monsters, with I would say at least 10-15 extremely usable monsters that allow the OL to really pick monsters that fit his evil plan. (Yes there are ~5 weak monsters, but why would you pick them?)

This means the OL gets much more flexible and usually has a selection of monsters that truly allow him to execute his strategy, instead of deciding between the same 3 monsters for every quest.

The heroes of the CK are a different story. A good chunk of them is completely fine, there is however a handful of stupidly overpowerd heroes and a decent chunk of underpowerd heroes.

This means I wouldn't recommend choosing CK heroes for your first campaign. After all the base game offers amazing heroes as well and if you get to know the game a little bit better you can tell what heroes shouldn't be picked.

Then again even with just the monsters added for the first campaign, your heroes get the benefit of encountering new monsters all the time, keeping the expirience fresh and interesting for them.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people on this forum think the CK monsters/heroes are OP or UP. I have been playing this game since inception, and have every expansion. I am a long time D1e player as well.

Our group always has fun, and there never have been complaints of OP or UP. Are some monsters/heroes better than others? In certain situations, yes. Are some worse? Yes.

But that is part of the game.

I would be bored out of my mind if every hero and/or monster was generically the same, offering no challenge nor change to required strategies, tactics, etc.

I have avoided posting in most of the threads that deal with the CK, because those that have strong opinions about it being worthless, OP or UP, end up being the same individuals that seemingly cannot accept the fact that what they have is an OPINION, not fact, and if others disagree with them, it simply leads to a massive amount of flaming.

I chose to post in this thread due to the fact that I believe (and yes it is only my opinion) that some of the information being disseminated about the CK is at best misleading, and at worst blatantly wrong.

Some people need excuses to justify spending a substantially larger amount of money on the new Rehash Packs. Especially if they already bought the CK.

Or there are the occasional people like me who have bought neither.

True ... but you have always shown a thoughtful approach to your arguments. Anytime you disagree with someone, there is substance behind the disagreement, and you do so in a constructive manner. Thus, even if I disagree with your position, I listen to what you are saying, and give it serious consideration before presenting any rebuttal (if any at all).
