The Raider II Project

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

I have another version in mind, where the gun hatches are replaced by 10,5 cm Flak guns so 3 on each side on the front section and one on each side on the hull below the bridge.

But for any further thoughts I need to weight the model in my hands .......

WE NEED MORE SOLAR PANELS!!!!

I like it. Especially i like the turbolaser turrets ^^

Meanwhile I tried to add WW2 battlecruiser turrets to the Raider II

Those maybe are too WW2-ish and too bulky, but I enjoy the overall look of it. Maybe just make them smaller a bit.

I share it with you :)

Love the new turrets, though I'm biased. My only real gripe with your mods is the top of the bridge looks too crowded to me. I'd suggest scaling down the circular dish on the starboard side to at least half.

I was also disappointed by the Raider bridge (overall, I still like the stock model) but I think a broader, flatter one like the Vigil's is the answer. The stub looks too crowded with a dish. I also think the addition of a row of bigass turrets (and those don't look like they'll elevate much) kills the design of what's meant to be a sleek anti-fighter ship, not to mention lining them up also squanders the triangle shape. Putting two down each side along an angle gives you the ability to fire four forward, which is better when you're chasing down a Falcon. (this is why they have the smaller, fighter-caliber pop-up lasers; so they can fire 6 forward) Seeing it without the solar panels, I can see why they put them on there; a shallow dagger shape with no adornment is a weak, uninteresting design. It needs something (even the big docking rings of the Arquitens-class) but the lazy design of the Victory shouldn't be the answer. Those flappy panels and awful bridge.... at least the FFG designers put some thought into it. Makes me want to add a nose to my Decimator model.

On the other hand, it's your model, you have to look at it, like it, and use it, so do what you want. If you want to put heavier guns on it and say it's a light anti-cap-ship boat, I say go for it. Add more impressive engines while you're out it, or bigger outrigger spars for the side turrets, but it needs something.

Sorry, the Raider is a work of art, and your version pales by comparison...

You finaly get something you've been wanting for so long.. and you don't like it.. really... the most gorgeous ship they have made to date.. gone in on it with LFL to boot... created something with a wedge shape and sized perfectly for this game because they want scale to be serious.. and important.. and you dont like it... wow...

People amaze me some days...

FFG:here guys, this is what you've been asking for, this amazing ship is for you.. it even has that fix for the advanced you wanted...

XWINGER: oh, that's nice.. whats with these winglets here.. think I'll rip those off...

Really... sigh

"Gorgeous" is only one point-of-view, Private. I don't think I've ever heard anybody asking for a Star Destroyer with TIE Interceptor wings glued on it. I've heard a lot of people asking for the straight-forward triangle shaped Star Destroyer though, like what the OP is working on.

Off with the wings!!!

Do what you want to with it. There are plenty of people who modify their ships. I like the stock design of the raider, but I would like turrets instead of the funny looking ports myself. If I were modding one, I'd probably put 2 turrets on each upper "side" but to each their own. Do what you like with it.

Stock model with the repainted wings looks pretty sharp to me, and with little fuss. I might add a shield generator or something, might have to go back and look at some shapeways options for that :)

Stealthy, yes. But not Imperial.

and bolting a radar dish on it is Imperial too I suppose?

I agreed with the wing sentiment, but you entirely lost me with the falcon ugly mashup

It'd be nice if we could see FFG's original Raider concepts, it changed a lot from its first form.

Yeah it did... but I like it fine how it is now.

Where are the side arcs on FFG's version supposed to shoot from? I can only see the forward-facing guns, and it looks like the solar panels would block any guns that might be hiding behind them to shoot out the sides. Or is it just implied that the popup guns facing forward can swivel to the sides? It seems like they're too far forward to match the printed side arcs.

I don't know if it is just a lack of imagination that makes people insist those solar panels are supposed to produce electricity ala 20th Century Earth, or if there is some specific reason written into Star Wars lore to insist that solar panels must mean electricity generation.

Speaking specifically about TIEs, the entire concept is a Twin Ion Engine, which would use charged particles (ions) and accelerate them using electromagnetic or electrostatic force in order to produce thrust. The major limitation is not power, it is reaction mass, especially in tiny little ships like TIEs. Panels that collect ions from solar winds would be invaluable by collecting a steady stream of reaction mass that the twin ion engines could then throw out to produce thrust. In fact, the design of TIEs provides no room whatsoever for storage of reaction mass, there is almost no way those panels could operate as anything other than Ion collectors.

In the case of the Raider, a smaller ship like this one could easily benefit from the collection of additional reaction mass. Any mass collected would serve to reduce the amount of storage necessary, a critical limitation on any small capital ship (or fighter) where internal volume has not yet increased enough to make internal storage practical. The use of efficient, cheap to operate Ion Engines would make for a much longer mission life, and the ability to operate more effectively while doing so.

Plus, they look pretty cool. The only "annoying" thing for me would be insanely out of date bric-a-brac like "radar dishes" or something similar. We don't even use those on modern military aircraft any more, it's all electronically scanned phased array setups.

I bet that once they get the real model in their hands, its unadultered sheer beauty will inevitably grow on these butcherers, and will prevent them from doing anything they will later regret.

Yup...

I'm far more peeved by its solid unlit engine than its wings.

I'll admit, the wings kinda grew on me.

Okay, if we have a contingent of people pulling off wings, I'd like to see those extra wings end up in capable hands and applied to other Raiders to make it even more covered in wings!

Not that it would look good, but it would be interesting to see.
