The Raider II Project

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

For me I liked the hvy guns and the long range radar dish...Made it look menacing ; wondering how it would look with the wings on too...Nothing in the Star Wars universe made actual sense on why it was built that way except for the inner planetary vehicles and aircraft...Imagination is a creative art of your mind and should never be discouraged...

As you wish

Remove the winglets and it starts looking like an ISD that shrunk in the wash. Have you considered painting them the same colour as the rest of the hull, so they look like ablative plate/staggered armour? Keeps the profile of the Raider while losing the TIE hybrid look some people don't seem to like much.

Just a very quick and dirty job

I like this, aesthetically speaking, I personally prefer the wings over not having them there. Like I said in a previous post(in another topic), the design reminds me of something the Sith Empire would have.

Consider too if an ISD is transatmospheric, then a smaller craft like this may need wings to supplement the repulsors when in an atmosphere.

If these wings are supposed to be solar collectors the color would not matter much, and if it is for some cloaking tech or shield emitter, again the color would not matter.

on a secondary note, I like the idea of actual scale cannon barrels and that sensor dish/array.

Somehow I like those wings more in the hull plating color. This remains me a bit on something like Schürzen to protect the most vital areas and interior components from direct turbolaser and torpedo hits ^^

Sorry, the Raider is a work of art, and your version pales by comparison...

You finaly get something you've been wanting for so long.. and you don't like it.. really... the most gorgeous ship they have made to date.. gone in on it with LFL to boot... created something with a wedge shape and sized perfectly for this game because they want scale to be serious.. and important.. and you dont like it... wow...

People amaze me some days...

FFG:here guys, this is what you've been asking for, this amazing ship is for you.. it even has that fix for the advanced you wanted...

XWINGER: oh, that's nice.. whats with these winglets here.. think I'll rip those off...

Really... sigh

Well said.

I would love to love the Raider but I cannot.

The solar wings on the Raider serve only one purpose: To make the ship look fancy and cool.

To me, it makes the Raider look like a kids toy from a freaking action figures toy range like some super villian vessel in Badman intended to look evillish and somehow its design wont fit into the Galactic Empire Era.

So you don't like this toy because it looks like a toy.....

It isn't a toy. Its a model of an imperial military space ship. And it should look like it was developed by imperial engineers to serve its role. So its design should be functional and plausible.

Welcome to the X-Wing forums!

The turret I used is the one from this picture:

If you find other pictures of warships taken in the same angle and similar lighting, I'll try to use them in a mockup and post the result.

Thanks! :)

The turrets from the Deutschland class are very distinct in part due a design detail which we've all see hundreds if times: the rangefinders. I think those are the most recongizable / "earthy" aspects.

My question was more pertaining to "does anyone know an existing model or kit that sports turrets suitable for such a conversion task?"

Your photoshops are brilliant and a wing-repaint plus turreting so to speak should yield really cool results!

I'm ok with the raider...

... But your version is excellent and I'd be more than happy to own a Raider II

Many people seem concerned about how the Raider's panels supposedly 'block' the aft fire arcs... But I didn't hear anyone complaining about how the same fire arcs in the CR-90 came directly out from the engine section... Without any turret or cannon being visible there.

Even so, you can glue a little turret on the external vertical section of the panels, and Ta Dah!, unobstructed line of fire.

And now the panels also double as an energy source for the side turrets (or extra heat dissipation from its laser fire).

Also mind that the model may not be fully finished yet, because even in the very same announcement, the standing model's render slightly differs from the boxed model's one.

Dude that is totally wicked...That would definitely be an awesome conversion...I got an ISD sometime back and was going to bash it into the Imperial Vigil...I could never find the right gun emplacements...

So I have to buy three of them. One staying original design, one without the silly solarpanels, one with repainted armor solarpanels. And perhaps a Scum&Villainy version of it.

400 $ here we go.

Okay, that was funny as heck. (Above Post #61)

I've been toying around with mspaint to try different paint schemes for blood stripes. I'm liking what those will do. Give it an almost republic Venator class look

I'm much more forgiving of the Raider than OP, but actually the Vigil's sensor dish was the first thing that came to mind as a possible mod. Reading through here, I also agree strongly that the hull-colored plating is much improved.

@s1n

Haha! Move along! There is nothing to see for you.

@Nephentur

But we need rangefinders as well. "Sir, our rangefinder tells the target is now range 2. We are not allowed to fire main guns."

@aadh

Surprisingly Im settled somewhat with the hull-colored extra armor. It now looks more like a part of the ship and less frankensteined ^^

I don't like the great big Vigil dish, sticks up too far IMO, but I am curious what it would look like with a flatter, rectangular dish like the CR-90 or the new falcon will have.

This time I altered the line layout of the main turrets.

I wanted to see how the Vigil's layout look like with the Raider. So here is the result. I liked the lined up layout better

since this vessel is a lot sleeker. Maybe with a smaller version of the turrets.

Notice that I added turrets at the bridge section ... they should be able to cover the arcs of the aft section even with the wings in place.

Painted up like that the wings look like standoff armor to protect the ships vital areas from torpedo strikes. Now the hard part...matching the paint and wash.

I like the wings better.

Yeah same here. The thing gets to skinny and looks like a fat needle without the wings.

Plus, as a fighter hunter, It'll need the solar panels to collect as much energy as possible to produce a higher output of pew pew.

Yeah... DAT!

All guns and wings version

My main problem with this project is now I may have to buy two Raiders.

One to leave as is, I do like the design although I do find the panels a bit odd, and one to convert.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned that the Vigil guns look similar to the secondary batteries on German WW2 warships

True, the Vigils main guns look like the Bismarcks 10,8 cm anti air guns.

At least it is now known where Fractalsponge got his inspiration from ^^

And its fitting the purpose.

Those are AA Guns. The Raider is an AA Ship. ;)

The prow seems to thin and fragile on the Raider.

It reminds me of this:

Silver-Pie-Server.jpg

Remember this ship has a sizable underside that doesn't show up in the mode shots (but does on the box art).

I actully like your raider better, though i mostly like the FFG version as well. winglets aside, i do think the guns on this vessel are too small, given that the ship is 150m in length. Look at the proportion of the guns on the CR90.

Visually, it looks much larger than it should, this has been discussed in other threads. A larger bridge, the bigger guns help it look more the size that it is, i think. I'd pick up a raider 2, thats for sure.
