It just looks almost exactly like the other, just without the winglets... and yes the WWII big guns don't look too good, very 'earth' looking..
If you have this, you may as well just use the other...

I'll be honest, just no. You are basically Frankensteining two ships together that serve two vastly different roles.
And the raider as presented isn't? How is the FFG design anything other than "let's put giant tie interceptor wings on a star destroyer?"
Moving on, yes, the battle ship guns are too big.
When I get mine I will probably look at it a while to see how easy it would be to remove the wings but that is the only change I would make.
Yes yes - a bastard it is ![]()
Actually this is the front gun turret of the Panzerkreuzer Admiral Graf Spee ... so no battleship
Yes of course a german war ship ![]()
@oneway:
I feel the dark side is strong in you. Thats good. But hot-tempered Sith are not famed for designing space ships.
Leave it to the Imperial Engineers and give them some time.
@Thomas
This is more or less the Raider without the wings. Remember if you snap off the wings, there are still the wing connectors which are not shown on this picture:

Never said it wasn't, but what they did was take a ship meant for anti fighter duty and applied it to a corvette. Some of the current EU ships have a look similar to it already though and feel like they took more from those designs. Then this took that already hybrid model and stuck large unwieldy guns that are known to be terrible against small ships and took some of the sleek anesthetic off a model that was built to have a sleek line to it.

Hey, those are turreted dual heavy laser cannons. Similar to this one, but a bit larger:

After all, those are fast-fireing dual heavy laser turrets on the Raider II
So, don't tell me they are terrible against small ships!
An Imperial Dagger!

This is just for a rough comparison of turret sizes.

That actually looks outstanding. OK, that's settled. Wings coming off. Still wish the bridge superstructure was a bit more pronounced though.
Yes its a bit too flat for an Imperial ship.
Maybe for practical reasons ...
It wouldn't fit in the box with proper sensor equipment ![]()
I like the wings better.
Actually I really like the bridge the way it is.. sleek and stealthy looking.. it's just gorgeous..

Stealthy, yes. But not Imperial. Imperial design is bulky but functional.
If the Raider has any manners of stealth technology, maybe proper upgrade cards, its design would be perfect.
Edited by TheRealStarkillerHey all,
well since i already said in another thread that i looooove the design i thought i will chime in and troll yours! ![]()
Nah i wont.. hahahah... sorry i needed to say that, i kinda felt obligated... ![]()
But...
I think i could live without the panel on the bottom to be honest.. it was a bit to much for me as well.
I still would say it is the most sexy ship i saw and for what it is even the panels make sense, anyhow....
What i dont like about your design is that you put the turrets in the middle...
In my opinion it looses the sleek look and makes it bulky and actually looking slow...
Also that dish.. i always hated these dishes.. (on all the ships not only in your design)
Why they need a dish... is it for Raspberry Jam? Do they have a lifetime subscription to the NFL channel?
Hmmm.... i could deal with antennas...
What i like about the Raider design is that it is something different...
It does not want to be an ISD and not a Vigil...
Your design turns it into something i know already... (kinda)
Not necessarily in a bad way but in a way of.. saw that... know that already.. next one, im bored...
In the end... whatever anyone is doing to his Raider is up to him... if you will mod it into a flying VW Beetle or whatsoever...
Its up to personal preferences and gusto...
I like your designs and i am more then curious to see the end product, so please keep us up dated when you got the original in hand and start modding it!
I really want to see it.
Still i will keep mine, when i have it in hand, an original... (still drooling)
Awesome idea! I was thinking about the same thing and was browsing several WWI and WWII capital ships for the turrets.
Anyone got a good idea about which turrets would fit nicely?
Your size comparison just shows how ridiculously large those guns are for anti fighter support. You are comparing to a ship that isn't the same scale, 1/390 to 1/270. There is a reason why small fighters work so well against capital ships.
People stop trying to reinvent the wheel....its already perfect in the way it looks. If you dont like it then dont buy it. But if you want to blow $100.00 + on a ship just so you can turn it into some abomination from its sexy sleek design and risk damaging the model then go ahead. Its you money spend it how you wish. Just please no crying if the end results dont come about the way you wanted.
Remove the winglets and it starts looking like an ISD that shrunk in the wash. Have you considered painting them the same colour as the rest of the hull, so they look like ablative plate/staggered armour? Keeps the profile of the Raider while losing the TIE hybrid look some people don't seem to like much.

Welcome to the X-Wing forums!
The turret I used is the one from this picture:

If you find other pictures of warships taken in the same angle and similar lighting, I'll try to use them in a mockup and post the result.
I would love to love the Raider but I cannot.
To me, it makes the Raider look like a kids toy from a freaking action figures toy range like some super villian vessel in Badman intended to look evillish and somehow its design wont fit into the Galactic Empire Era.
Also, it IS a toy from an action movie series made for kids... So I don't get your complaint.
The entire Raider can fit inside of an ISD main docking bay. I think the size of the lasers are fine as is, as are their location.
Lining them up like that just doesn't look right. Also, the turrets you chose don't seem to have the ability to rotate 90 degrees perpendicular to the hull, which is a problem when they're supposed to be anti-fighter lasers.
The wings also remind me of an armored add-on package installed post-production.

Just a very quick and dirty job

I like this, aesthetically speaking, I personally prefer the wings over not having them there. Like I said in a previous post(in another topic), the design reminds me of something the Sith Empire would have.
Consider too if an ISD is transatmospheric, then a smaller craft like this may need wings to supplement the repulsors when in an atmosphere.
If these wings are supposed to be solar collectors the color would not matter much, and if it is for some cloaking tech or shield emitter, again the color would not matter.
on a secondary note, I like the idea of actual scale cannon barrels and that sensor dish/array.
Edited by LordColeI like the wings better.
Yeah same here. The thing gets to skinny and looks like a fat needle without the wings.

For me I liked the hvy guns and the long range radar dish...Made it look menacing ; wondering how it would look with the wings on too...Nothing in the Star Wars universe made actual sense on why it was built that way except for the inner planetary vehicles and aircraft...Imagination is a creative art of your mind and should never be discouraged...
The Raider has the ideal surfaces for a name to be stenciled on so, if you're doing this TheRealStarKiller, you need to come up with a name and stencil it along the bow appropriately.
