Epic Demo List Help

By hardcordo, in X-Wing

In an effort to try show off the game a little and get some more people in my smallish town playing I am taking my games from my house and alternating playing at the two stores in town. I have been playing regular 100pt matches there and get a few people to come and eyeball things and ask questions. I have heard that epic games can be exciting and I can fit a few people to try to demo it to more than one person at a time. So I just need a little help building some epic lists that would be fairly balanced but also show off my Rebel Transport and the CR-90.

Here is what I own.

2.5 starter sets (I split one with my brother I got the X-Wing)

Rebels

1 - X-Wing expansion

2 - Y-Wing expansions

3 - A-Wing expansions

2 - E-Wing expansions

2 - Z-95 expansions

2 - Hwk-290 expansions

4 - B-Wing expansion

1 - YT-1300

1 - YT2400

1 - Rebel Aces expansion

1 - Rebel Transport expansion

1 - CR-90 expansion

Empire

2 - Tie Fighter expansions

1 - Tie Advanced expansion

2 - Tie Phantom expansions

2 - Tie Bomber expansions

3 - Tie Interceptor expansions

2 - Tie Defender expansions

2 - Firespray-31 expansions

1 - Lambda Shuttle expansions

You're demoing, so it's more important to capture the feel and dynamics rather than show off a hypercompetitive list.

With that in mind I've built the following:

On the imperial side:

Colonel Jendon (26)
Weapons Engineer (3)
ST-321 (3)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Seismic Charges (2)
Gamma Squadron Pilot (18)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Seismic Charges (2)
Darth Vader (29)
Squad Leader (2)
"Dark Curse" (16)
"Backstabber" (16)
Colonel Vessery (35)
Predator (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Saber Squadron Pilot (21)
Push the Limit (3)
Saber Squadron Pilot (21)
Push the Limit (3)
Boba Fett (39)
Outmaneuver (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Navigator (3)
Total: 296

Jendon and 2 bombers as the heavy hitters, Vader and his two wingmen for the cinematics and just because. Vessery and two interceptors as flankers and Boba Fett for iconicity and as dangerous loner. There aren't too many mechanics interacting to keep track of, and the list is easily divisible between multiple players should you so choose.
The Rebel side is a bit more complicated because the huge ships do cost a lot of points.
You could try something like this:

GR-75 Medium Transport (30)
Toryn Farr (6)
Jan Ors (2)
Comms Booster (4)
Tibanna Gas Supplies (4)
EM Emitter (3)
Bright Hope (5)
Han Solo (46)
Expert Handling (2)
C-3PO (3)
Leia Organa (4)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Millennium Falcon (1)
Luke Skywalker (28)
R2-D2 (4)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Fire-Control System (2)
Ion Cannon (3)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Fire-Control System (2)
Ion Cannon (3)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Fire-Control System (2)
Ion Cannon (3)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Push the Limit (3)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Push the Limit (3)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Push the Limit (3)
Total: 299

You've got the Bright Hope, the last ship to leave Hoth, carrying Toryn Farr as in the expanded universe.
With her are the Falcon and Luke as they left Hoth, so Leia and 3PO in the Falcon with Han piloting.
With them are what could probably best be described as a late stage hit-and-fade, capture or run squad of three B-Wings with ions and 3 A-Wings as interference.
The trouble is of course that we don't have the Corvette in sight.
I think this Humanitarian relieve mission from Alderaan and diplomatic escort would get torn to shreds by the opposing list, but at least we have a good showing. Again, not too heavy on the mechanics or interactions.

CR90 Corvette (Fore) (50)
Raymus Antilles (6)
Quad Laser Cannons (6)
Engine Booster (3)
Leia Organa (4)
Tantive IV (4)
CR90 Corvette (Aft) (40)
R2-D2 (Crew) (4)
Engineering Team (4)
GR-75 Medium Transport (30)
Frequency Jammer (4)
Dutyfree (2)
Red Squadron Pilot (23)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Red Squadron Pilot (23)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
R2 Astromech (1)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
R2 Astromech (1)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Push the Limit (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Push the Limit (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Total: 299

I demoed it earlier today and it ended up being a really fun and close match. I used the first two lists you suggested and just used the corvette as an obstacle. Everyone seemed to have a good time and enjoyed it even though it was a really long match. Thanks for your help!

Of course! The Corvette is the centerpiece that the Rebels have just ioned to rescue a high stakes prisoner (Rebel Captive or Dodonna) and Vader has arrived with a relief force to either keep the prisoner or ensure he doesn't fall back into Rebel hands.

Narrative inserted, Gadge would be proud.

Glad it worked well. One thing I like to do when I demo is to use upgrade cards in the ships they come with. If people really like the way one of the ships performed, I can tell them to pick up the expansion pack, and they're ready to go.

I want to get more people playing epic in my area. Any helpful hints from your experience?

My town has a Facebook page devoted to board and tabletop gaming so I posted in there and I also talked to the store owner to see if they could mention to some of their regulars who might be interested. I also made sure to post pictures from the game on the page and that got a few more people into wanting to try it out.

From my experience this time I should have spent the time the day before or earlier that morning putting the pilots and their upgrade cards in little baggies so I could speed up setup time. I really need to work on a better solution to storing and organizing my upgrade cards.

I LOVE the idea of your list, especially the thematic of it. But the CR-90 can only fit one crew per section right?

Or am I missing something?

The Tantive Title adds crew and team slots

I thought I missed something; thanks

Also thanks again for the builds, I love the thematic fell of these.

You should create Missions over at mission control for both of these builds. Just think how easy it would be to pull out the mission and not go through the exercise and time of building a 300 point squad. I'm definitely going to try these.

P.S. for those who love to build their own squads, no problem, but for those of us that don't play often or often enough to know all of the cards, prebuilt missions with squads are a great way to play.

Yeah I totally need to start putting my demo games into the mission builder especially for the epic matches.

Of course! The Corvette is the centerpiece that the Rebels have just ioned to rescue a high stakes prisoner (Rebel Captive or Dodonna) and Vader has arrived with a relief force to either keep the prisoner or ensure he doesn't fall back into Rebel hands.

You excell my padwan!

If you can borrow one, try and use a second corvette on the imperial side. its *truly* epic to have two huge ships slugging it out with turbo lasers while the small ships circle around them. You need to fudge it a bit and if you can get the decimator crew to go on the 'imperial' corvette it becomes really cool.

I think if you buy and expansion and *dont* play the scenarios you're not getting your moneys worth.

Its a nice change to play a game with a 'win criteria' a bit more complex than 'kill everything' and the scenarios are really well thought out in general.

Its like you know, you buy and expansion pack.... thats more than a ship and a dial. They give you a great mission but i think a lot of people on here ignore them and dismiss narrative play without actually trying it.
