Michiel's Let's Discuss Builds: Oicunn, Mithel, Backstabber & Night Beast #2

By MichielR, in X-Wing

Hello again X-wing fans,

This week we take a look at another 100 points build: the Doominator followed by three TIE Fighters: Mauler Mithel, Backstabber and Night Beast. There's already been a lot of talk on this build.. as it's an odd one!

This build has seen a lot of good action in my local group with great success. It's weird in a way that it confuses your enemy in what you're going to do next: are you going to ram? Are you using vader? Are you using Ruthlessness with all those flanking TIEs so close? It has a lot of different damage applications and if you dare it can wipe the floor with a lot of builds.

Oh I got a bit carried away at the end with small-talk.. but I make up for it with an epic new outro. Check it out!

Thanks again for all the support, I love you guys for it. <3

Fly casual people and see you next week.

Cool video, gave me some ideas on my own Decimator build.

I also like the normal Ties you pointed out. I honestly never really looked at the normal Ties because I'm a big Firespray and Interceptor fan but now I might have to look though them at least in case I missed something else that's good.

As for Build ideas I call this one Driving in Texas :)

Kath Scarlet
Heavy Laser Cannon, Elusiveness
53 points
Captain Oicunn
Veteran Instincts, Proximity Mines, Mara Jade, Rebel Captive, Tactical Jammer

Because in Texas anything smaller than a F-350 gets ran over lol :) so I built this list as a run over/pop up and shoot combo. I hope to get to try it out this weekend.

Nothing beats ramming you're enemy with Oicunn. :)

I really like these videos. as a new player, sometimes game balance isn't something you see, so when i feel like something is bad, and i can watch videos where others are successful with it, it helps me understand that the problem probably isn't with the models, its probably with the way I'm playing it.

in terms of the build, I'm surprised that howlrunner didn't find his way in there, but is it because you are trying to keep from bricking up to get behind them? Howlrunner seems like he wants to fly in formation always, and those ties don't seem to care much for formation, so is it that or something else?

i will try the build out over the next few games and post what my experiences were with it, but please understand i am new and outside of experience with blue maxx and wings of war, have little experience with x-wing.

great videos and keep em coming. they areally are helpful.

I've been running:

  • Mauler Mithel
  • Backstabber
  • Oicunn + Determination
  • OGP Shuttle + Vader

Been having a lot of fun with it.

Hey don't sweat it, we all have to learn. The best way to find out if a build is solid is by testing it in a local group.. but don't just test it yourself - test it together! Let your friends try the build to and tinker with it on the fly in between matches.

You're right about howlrunner, I left him out to avoid formation flying, even though he's on of the better TIE pilots out there.

Keep at it and report back to us what you made. Sharing and discussing lists is a lot of the fun in X-wing! Don't be afraid to try something nothing is ever stupid if its fun enough!

so i gave that list a shot with a few minor changes. here is my list.

Oicunn

Vader

Moff Jerrjerrod

Tactical Jammer

ruthlessness

Dark Curse

Mauler Mithel

Backstabber

100 on the nose, and i have to say this:

i played against two lists tonight vs a buddy, the first game was XXBB, where both B wings had HLC on them, and i chewed that list apart pretty hard corps. The decimater moved in front of the ties the turn before i made a mad dash to get behind them, and because of the tactical jammer, i was rolling 4 evade dice with an evade token, and they weathered the shots really well. the next turn the ties were in on him and i was able to get ouf of his x wing shots and within all but one tie of short range to his b wings, so it was short work from there. In that game, i bumbed an x wing for a damage, shot another xwing, vadered it, then ruthlessness finished it off. the ties took out what was left of teh other x wing because of arc dodging, and the one b wing that had a shot on the tie had to cross the base of the decimator to do it, meaning i got 4 evade dice, so i only took one damage in the cross over. i then ripped the b wings apart pretty handily as it took him t turns to get out of range of something and in arc to shoot the HLC's.

the second list was really weird, but my buddy insisted it was a really good list. it was:

HWK-290 - Roark Garnett

Moldy Crow

Blaster Turret

Recon Specialist

Keyan Farlander - B Wing

Advanced Sensors

Opportunist

HLC

Bwing/E2 Modification

Jan Ors

Airen Cracken - Z 95 Headhunter

Munitions Failsafe

Proton Rockets

So this list was incredibly challenging for me. He was, as i understand it, through Jan and recon Specialist, able to throw out focus and evade tokens like candy, and the moldy crow was able to hold on to the focus actions it had, making the blaster turret able to shoot and focus its shots multiple times throughout the game. Additionally, because of the additional focus being thrown around, it was able to avoid multiple shots many times over, making it had to kill.

In the early game, i had only the decimator at range 1 and the ties at range 2, behind the decimator. i was able to get two hits on the A wing, and vader and ruthlessness finished it off, but not before the decimator took 9 damage from rockets and heavy laster cannon. i hated to use vader to ensure to clear off the a wing, but i couldn't take the chance and had to finish it off.

Unfortunately, the next turn, i pushed forward with the decimator to further cover my ties on the approach, and while i did close the gap with the b wing so its HLC couldn't hit me, the blaster turret from the 290 put two damage on backstabber, and the b wing finished him off that turn. I dumped my shots into the 290 (to try to get rid of recon specialist, as she was the driving force behind the crazy amounts of focus and the evade going out every turn with jan ors) and rolled 4 dice into her, but she evaded two and had an evade token, basically hitting her once, and then rutheles and vader, putting the decimater at 4 6 hull left.

the next turn, the decimator banked as hard as it could but could not get around to closing the distance to the b wing fast enough, and he put 2 damage on it with the b wing and finished it off with the moldy crow, however, both maulter mithel and dark curse were on the b wings six at this point, and the opened up on him and dealt 5 to him, leaving him shield-less and in close range.

The next turn, the b wing, tries to bank as hard as it can, but it goes down to the two ties, however, dark curse is claimed as a casualty to the hwk 290, leaving mauler and the 290 with no shields on it.

The good news is that between one bumb somewhere, and vader and ruthelessness, i was able to get a damage or two through to the 290, and that left it without shields, mauler closed in with no damage, picked up a focus, and killed it at PS 7 before his chance to hit me at PS4.

this game was a tough one. the list dealt an insane amount of damage quickly, and it flat out dropped the decimator very quickly. i was able to use the tactical jammer a few turns and my opponent said that he felt like with the decimator on the table he never felt like he had good shots, even with target locks on the ties because of the potential 5 evade dice and focus they often had.

In all, i like the list a lot. Moff Jerrjodd is in there just to get rid of the one super annoying critical (whatever it may be) to keep the doominator going for just one or maybe two more turns. proton rockets suck, for sure, but the extra dodge dice from the tactical jammer really kept the ties safe and allowed them to close. After the game, my opponent confessed that he felt like he never knew what i was going to do, and ended up splitting up his squad to not end up rammed by the decimator, only to be shot, "vadered", and "ruthelessed" into oblivion. He also stated that he never thought the doom shuttle approach was good, and that vader was too high a cost to be used effectively, but confessed that vader on a decimator with a turret, and oicunn bump is crazy scary, especially when you cant turn you back to deal with it, because mauler, and backstabber are out there waiting to get ya.

I really like the list. ill post some more thoughts when i get them.

oh, and i played moff and tactical jammer because i dont have an outlfank, what set or expansion is he from?

Outmaneuver is from the TIE Defender, I believe. But I could be wrong.

Its from the Tie Defender and the E-wing.

ok, well my wife is super cool and bought me a phantom and defender, so i have those cards now...i will give your list verbatim a shot, but i have to ask: is tactical jammer as good as i think it is? it seemed really REALLY good just to be able to put an obstacle in front of my more vulnerable ties and let that cover them on their movements to get behind my opponent.

Im also curious if using the decimator like that makes still viable for Vader. it seems i might want to put expose on it and yssard and jade on it to really mess up my opponents on my assault.

What do you think? based on my write up of what happened. I'm just scared to get rid of oicunn, because its so dang good! Especially for low skill players like me who are more likely to collide than a skilled player that will maneuver more effectively.

Tactical Jammer is occasionally good, It really depends on your position control. One extra evade die isn't a lot - unless you've got the focus to back it up - and considering how battles move, you'll be disappointed if your expectations are too high, but it is decent when you can leverage it.

That's what I thought as well about Tactical Jammer, it looks good on paper but you have to bring your A-game to get mileage out of it.
