Narrative ways to describe critical hits?

By SirSprinkles, in Game Masters

I'm GMing a game shortly, and I want to get some info on describing critical hits to my players to give them more of an immersive feel to combat. Any suggestions on ways to describe crits?

The crit chart gives you some direction in general ways, as well as specific. A lower level crit to intellect for instance could be some kind of glancing head wound. A more serious crit causing a limb to be blown off is pretty specific.

And if the damage type doesn't match up to the Critical Injury entry on the table, don't be afraid to elaborate. If a player gets a "Head Ringer" result from a blaster bolt you can always describe it as one of the several bolts fired in the attack roll dislodging something that drops on the PC's head.

I aspire to describe crits in the same manner they are portrayed in the movies - it's a big deal. My music player has an uncanny knack for putting on the perfect bit of soundtrack when it happens, too. It's worth slowing down the pace of an encounter to describe the critical and the reaction and if you can scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE" or something like that, you're going to have a win on your hands. Well, hand.

One tip along the lines of Themensch's words. Look how the movie also portrays critical hits..

you see scrapes, small cuts, bruises but you never ever see gory blood...! even when luke lost his hand or the Tauntaun was cut open!

I see too many GM's blowing up heads and blood gushing , pink mist laser cannon descriptions.

That's not star wars to me. Keep it thematic and exciting without undo elaboration of appearance.
