What about Katana fleet scenario.
9 dreadnoughts in the middle of the map. Capture as much as you can. We don't even need actual models for boarding shuttles and dreadnoughts. Tokens will work.

I wouldn't mind seeing some small base ship, like the fighters, representing 2-3 medium ships like Lambda-class Shuttles and Stormtrooper Transports from the X-wing PC game. I want missions where a VIP's shuttle is in the middle of the map or at the very end where you have to race over to capture/rescue it. Boarding parties rushing at convoys that can usurp CR90s and spirit away cargo.
this brought up a good point, I think we should have boarding parties that would be fun if after a ram you could board the enemy or deploy boarding ships (i.e. the shuttle or somthing) that board and hinder your opponents ships in some way
I plan on using two victory class destroyes type I and II and fielding a complementary group of fighters to them ...i plan on doing ranged attacks to weaken ships as well as provide focused fire. Try to get as much front arc salvos in and hopefully if the wave one expansion packs are out I can send bombers over to say hi to Rebel capital ships or cruisers
I think it's very hard to start designing fleets until we see what the missions/objectives are personally. I really hope that's the next preview!

I am really torn here. Fighters or Rebs or Objectives next.... Hmmmm...

Why not both Fighters and Objectives? Who needs to see whats in those silly Rebels Fleet
I know I want an article on objectives next, but that's because I am extremely high imperial dudes and don't care about rebels
Im curious about how much the objectives are going to affect the game. I think it may be wise to hold off of fleet build ideas till we know what we are dealing with first .....but untill then i can still have fun planing a fleet in my mind.
So the gladiator....
I am impress with the title that lets you shot after you move, I feel that this will be very significant since the gladiator only has short range attacks on its starboard and port sides (the gladiator 1 that is)
So the ability to move into close range THEN fire is going to be huge
I love tactics
It's called the demolisher
Im thinking a good imperial setup will be a line abreast formation with 3 cap ships spaced about range 2-3 apart. The goal being to drive across the board in such a way that any fast ships which go down the middle will pass between 2 of the ships and and get pummeled and anyone who isnt going to pass between will have to go down the board edges. Since my fleet will likely be 2 vsd and 1 gsd I will put the gsd on the end of the line which I think will see less action with the idea that he can move faster and react quicker to a changing situation. Any squadrons I have will be placed between the 3 cap ships and moved to screen the appropriate areas quickly. If I bring any bombers they will remain with the middle cap ship with the goal of having them engage anyone who moves through the middle or push out to one of the flank cap ships if it looks to be needed.
My rebel list will likely run flank refused style setting up nebs near a corner of the board with a corvette or 2 tucked in close. The corvettes will rush the nearest imp cap ship with the goal of timing it so they arrive to fire at the same time as the squadrons and still within range of the nebs. Pummel the fighter screen, pour fire into the cap ship, and hope the reb squadrons can survive long enough to be effective. The goal will be to eliminate one imp cap ship and then use the corvettes to secure objectives while the nebs and reb squadrons tussle with whatever is coming their way.
**ALL THESE IDEAS WILL CHANGE WHEN THE RULES AND OBJECTIVES ARE FULLY RELEASED**
I like your ideas, I'm personally leaning toward a wedge formation probably with a Vic flanked by two gladiators, but a similar concept

I thought about that one but I wanted to pick up each expansion pack before I starting getting duplicates so 2 gsd fleets will have to wait until a bit after the release.
Personally I think Rebs with 2 AF running the edges of the board while 2 Neb-Bs sit in the center with some fighters will present a big dilemma to the Imp. AFs have Broadside weapons, so they are able to maneuver around other ships while keeping their full fire-power useful. The Imp will have to decide whether to go after the center (leaving the AFs free to run around the center and flank the SDs), go after one AF (potentially the best option, as it gives them the opportunity to destroy a big chunk of the rebels, though it leaves them positioned poorly to counter the other AF and Nebs), or split up and try and handle each one individually (which gives the rebel fighters the best chance).
Assault Frigates really offer an interesting game play style as they pretty much the only ship (bar the Gladiator) with more broadside power than in the forward arc. They are the only ship with 3 Red Dice in the side arc (and one more blue to boot). They also have an evade token, which really helps at Long Range. While a VSD has amazing forward fire-power, if the enemy manages to get past them they are going to have a terrible time trying to get the enemy back into their arc, and their side and rear arcs are mediocre. If AFs are cheaper than a VSD (which I would guess they are judging by total dice and total hull points) then they might be my favorite ship.
I'm gonna run 1 VSD and 2 GSD with fighters and bombers filling in the left over space.
Probably gonna have the Corrupter as my Vic so I have a little more flexibility with the bombers. The plan is for the Victory to sit at range and shoot and when the rebels come calling the gladiators swoop in to slug it out with the bombers being the swing force. Of course it's all still just a rough idea but I think it'll have a lot of fight in it and be flexible enough to deal with the various mission cards we've seen so far.

And there is also the upgrade that can give them +1 red in the side arc (assuming the AF can take that particular upgrade) for a whopping 4 reds from the side arc, certainly enough to start to make a VSD sweat, and any of the other ships crap their pants (especially when you talk about focus fire giving rerolls+bonus dice)

I hadn't thought of that. That would make Assault Frigate a true force to be reckoned with.

Point cost is going to be the dilemma because even if they run similar to gsd you are still going to have next to nothing left for fighters with 4 cap ships. Cap ships base cost for your 4 ship list probably run in the neighborhood of 220-240+, add in commander for another 25 or so you got room for maybe 2-3 squadrons and few to no upgrades. Now I could be wrong but I seriously doubt the afii is going to cost less than a neb b and mos likely it will cost slightly closer to a vsd so 50-60 points is probably where it will land.
I'm not saying you cant make it work, but you will likely have to bare bones the 4 cap ships or cut one out entirely. A much more reasonable approach is probably a pair of afII or 1 afII and a pair of nebs.

Hmm, maybe 3 AFs with A-Wings (X-wings benefit from escort, so for simple space superiority A-Wings are better, especially with Counter). Or 2 Kitted out AFs and X-Wings + B-Wings (Gallant Haven really helps B-Wings with their awful movement rate).
However with AFs I really think the more capital ships you can squeeze in the better, as the goal is to provide more targets than your enemy can handle and end up with at least 1 AF (or something else) flanking the SDs.
I'm curious to see the AF speed chart, as its description specifically mentions how fast it is. I wonder if it will have Speed 3.
Corvettes are in the 38-44 range I beleive. Nebuloun Bs were 52 at the demo, gladiators are 56-62... This is where I am assuming the Assault Frigate will slot in at high 60s to mid 70s, say 68-78... An finally VSD at 73-85.
I think it's safe the AF will have two classes, not a I-II as it's already a mark II. I think in the fleet expansion article it shows a AF mark IIb, so an A & B... Which matches the corvette C90a & b.
So I think two AF and another cap, 2 tops if you want any fighters. That's alright you can run one AF down either flank or run em in a line and alternate the closer one, as one takes damage replace it with the other. Also keep in mind the Fleet expansion article notes imperials are surprised at its speed so I'm guessing it's got a max speed of 3.
I'm an imperial at heart, and love the original Assault Frigate, but the more I think about the Mark II the more I like it... Even with out seeing its preview yet.

Dont do it! don't let their fancy ships turn you to the Rebel side!

especially since that so called "fancy ship" is little more then recycled garbage that the scum picked up, We will turn it into space dust....
pathetic rebels

That was pathetic help of Rendili engineers to bring proper ship to the rebellion based on almighty dreadnoughts. All dead by now I think. No more fancy ships for rebels, only dreadnoughts modified with space garbage.
The assault frigate MK 2 is going to be a fun ship to try out, since it's the ship that most reminds me of ye old battleships bristling with cannons along the side and unleashing hell with devastating broadsides...
But the Empire has the Gladiator too, which is like ye old battleships bristling with cannons along the side and unleashing hell with devastating broadsides...on speed
Yep, it will be interesting to see if one can utilise any historic ship of the line strategies using the gladiators and assault frigates.
Somehow with the factoring of fighters, other styles of ship and the lack of "wind" constraints, I doubt it though.
