Running Dark Heresy as a PBEM...some advice needed

By Gecko3D, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hey everyone,

Some friends in the UK recently bought me the DH rulebook as a birthday present and I would like to run a campaign. I am an experienced GM of other systems (pretty much you name it, I've done it over the years) - I've been playing/gamesmastering various systems for over 25 years.

I can't start a campaign live here, for a number of reasons - ignoring for a moment the life stuff that is intruding, and the difficulties of getting a bunch of 30 and 40-somethings together on a regular (and convenient to all) basis, I have just started running a RuneQuest campaign with a bunch of inexperienced but very enthusiastic players and don't want to interfere with that arrangement by suddenly throwing them into a totally different milieu when they are just beginning to get their head around the Gloranthan universe!

The group that bought me the rules are up for playing the system, but of course are 14000km away from me, making regular online sessions via video-conferencing the only "live" option. That has ts own drawbacks, not least the 9-hour time difference!

So I have finally decided to try and run a PBEM campaign, with the occasional live sesson via Skype or similar conferencing app.

I would love to get some feedback from anyone here who has run DH as a PBEM, and get advice on how you handled the communication issues. Despite my experience, PBEM is not something I have ever organised, and while it seems possible at least, the lack of face-to-face contact is a little daunting.

Any suggestons on how to make the process as transparent for all concerned and how to manage dynamic situations such as combat etc, would be really appreciated.

I've been lurking on the forum for a little while now and have found some of the threads most enlightening and enjoyable. I hope some more experienced DH GMs can help out with some advice.

Thanks in advance...
