Super high PS builds

By Russells teapot, in X-Wing

Unfortunately not been playing as much as I'd like recently, but, at least that's given me time to play with lists!

I've been toying around with super high PS builds to see if I can get any that I'd like to fly.

May favourite so far:

PS10 rebels

Horton Salm - R2-D6, VI, ICT, 2 x flechette torpedoes

Wes Janson - VI

Luke Skywalker - VI, R2-D2

99 points for the initiative bid(!), maybe add munitions failsafe to Horton...

or:

Horton Salm - R2-D6, VI, ICT, 2 x flechette torpedoes

Wes Janson - VI, Hull

Tycho Celchu - VI, PTL, Chardaan, stealth device, test pilot

In both builds Horton & Wes combine for early damage, with Luke or Tycho zooming around on their own for the late game. I think I prefer the second option, as Tycho is a bit more manoeuvrable to play with phantoms.

Does anyone else have any experience with very high PS builds?

I like blocking tactics, and these look like easy prey. The first one more so

I'll take a mini swarm and absolutely ruin your day through blocking and action denial.

Building around a couple of named pilots is fine but taking nothing but can leave you outgunned and even a single loss will massively harm you.

Wes+VI is great, but you should have an Opportunistic Wedge or Keyan to take advantage of his ability (or both!).

Oh, I agree it's not grade-a effective. But it's got to be fun when your opponent pulls out fat Han, Whisper, Soontir, or Wedge, and you always get to shoot first! I wouldn't take it to a store championship, but it'd be worth it for a local tournament, or a casual game or two.

I've previously enjoyed all PS9 builds, both Rebel & Imperial, so if that was fun, then turning it up to 10 must be better!

Now, to get to 11...

I used to run a 4 PS9 imp build back when interceptors were a bit newer. It was a fun build, nothing to write home about, but did fairly well back then.

Vader

Soontir Fel

Turr + vet instincts

Mauler Mithel + vet instincts

I know, I know, an advanced AND soontir without a stress-inducing ability? Blasphemy! Only way to get 4 PS9s at the time :)

With Imperials you could run this:

Darth Vader

- Engine Upgrade

- Proton Rockets

- Outmaneuver

Soontir Fel

- Push the Limit

- Autothrusters

Turr Phennir

- Veteran Instincts

- Autothrusters

Only three ships, but tricky to catch and hits like a truck.

I had fun running a 999 build for a while:

Fel + PTL, TC, Hull

Mithel + VI, Hull

Whisper + VI, ACD, FC, Gunner

It's good times moving last and firing first, these guys are particularly difficult to action block, so that helps over come some of the swarm difficulties. The issue I found with this list was taking on larger ships and HLC's.

Later, I replaced Mithel and fel's hull with the doom shuttle.

Super high PS is Roark Garnet + multiply Swarm Tactics :)

I have fun with Soontir, Turr and either Vader or whisper (all at PS 9). There is something oddly thrilling about hyper mobile ships moving last. Once autothrusters come out, I'll probably shift my build around to include other pilots, perhaps even 3 interceptors.

Okapi - very similar to one of my all-time favourite lists to fly - auto-thrusters will get me to bust that one out again!

bernh - you have to spend a lot of points protecting Roark though - once he goes I tend to find that everyone else starts to look a bit silly!

Captnhalfbeard - 4 PS9 is pretty hilarious, I expect that was pretty hard to fly though!

For imperials, how about:

Boba - VI, prox mines, engine upgrade, navigator

Howlrunner - VI

Carnor - VI, Shield upgrade (can go Soontir - VI, Hull, but I think Carnor has a better card text without PTL)

That looks quite fun, but very fragile...

Suggested change, though: Remove Outmaneuver, add Lone Wolf for Vader and Targeting Computer for Fel. You don't want the initiative with this list; moving last is much more important than shooting first.

So I'm not much of a rebel player, however I was playing in tournament last month and ran across a really interesting list. ( I guess I was thrown off having never seen something like this, but I've only been playing since August). I was running the GENCON Naional Champ list, Whisper/Fel/Yorr. Round 2 I came across a High PS Rebel build.

Wes with Veteran instincts

Wedge with swarm tactics

HWK with blaster turret that hands out focus like candy.

It had other upgrades but being that it was a month ago, I can't remember every card. R2-d2 was on one of them.

I had the option for initiative so I gave it to him, reason being I wanted to see where the hawk and wedge would move in order to arc/turret dodge and I could better gauge where Wes was going. This actually worked for out for most of the game since Wes either stayed in formation or trailed behind. I ended up winning due to time. Fel went down early as did the hawk. Then wedge. we ended up timing out. Yorr had 7 or 8 HP left and Whisper lost a shield. Wes was starting to feel the pain as he k turned to shoot back and lost his shields and gained a stress. Next turn wouldn't have been pretty.

The list was really fun(and stressful) to play against. Forced me to pay super conservative with my phantom.

One of my favorite lists is one I call '989 Studios' after a company that made a favorite video game of mine.

Wedge w/ Predator & R2-F2

Jake Farrel w/ VI & Outmaneuver

Jan Ors w/ Kyle Katarn & Ion Turret

Fill in the rest as you like.

Boba, Chiraneau, VI for both and fill with points.
