There are thousands of prepainted figures for nearly every Star Wars character you have ever imagined on eBay from the old Wizards of the Coast game. I have probably 1,500+ of these from back when I played it regularly. You could easily get some very nice pieces for reasonably cheap if you don't want to wait for the expansions. Check out Rebelscum.com for a photo archive that shows a picture of every mini from the entire run.
For those disappointed by the cardboard hero's.....
If you've got 'em, great! If not, they're not really all that cheap. Sure, you can get tons of figures, but in my opinion, if you were to try and replace all of the cardboard tokens, I think you may as well save up and buy the expansions from FFG and get all the cool cards.
Let's look at what's missing and how much it would be to get these figures from, say, Miniature Market.
IG-88 - $3.25
Royal Guard Champion (use Carnor Jax) - $10.00 (this is from ebay since MM has no Carnor Jax listed)
General Weiss (I choose the Wookiee Hunter AT-ST for a replacement) $13.50
Han Solo - $6.25 ($1.85 - 12.75, but the $6.25 one is the cheapest one that looks nice)
Chewbacca - $5.25 ($2.95 - 8.50, again, I don't like the look of the cheapest one for this game)
3x Rebel Troopers $3.75
2x Duros Saboteurs - $1.00
Now, not all of those are in stock there and you could maybe get them cheaper elsewhere (or more expensive elsewhere), but let's say you could get those rates. You're paying $43 to replace a bunch of cardboard tokens when you could just wait a few months for the official expansions and spend $88 bucks MSRP (~$58 online) for the official figures with additional skirmish and campaign missions as well as skirmish cards.
Of course, if you're not interested in skirmish mode or extra campaign missions, these are probably the cheaper option. Plus, they're pre-painted. So this may be a good option and I'm glad Knucklesamwich brought it up, but I also wanted to share my point of view on the issue.
I'm one of the lucky ones who still has minis from the WOTC minis game. I'm a bit peeved at having lost the box with my Imperial, Separatist, and Fringe minis. I didn't have IG-88 or Carnor Jax, but I could use any of a bunch of Separatist battle droids as a proxy for IG-88 and an Emperor's Shadow Guard for the Royal Guard Champion. I did have some Duros that would have been great proxies for the Saboteurs. I do still have Han, Chewie, and some Rebel Troopers to use until I can get my hands on the expansion packs, and let's be realistic, I will be getting all the expansion packs.
I think the AT-ST in the core set is your best proxy option for General Weiss. The WOTC AT-STs don't have the same size base as the Imperial Assault ones.

No, they don't. But I figured that you can center it on the 2x3 rectangle and still have an idea of where it's standing. If you want to go the extra mile, cut out an ellipse with holes cut out for the AT-ST feet. The ellipse should extend out sideways. Now you have a stationary indicator of "facing" for the AT-ST for determining how it can move.
Hmm. I have a Wookiee Hunter AT-ST at home, maybe I'll try that and see how it goes ... Pics to come (if I remember).
I'm planning on doing this, at least until I get the expansion packs and get them painted. I have the complete set of Rebel Storm, and it lends itself extremely well to Imperial Assault.
Anyone though of using the WotC maps for skirmishes?

This game is made for close combat but I could see using 3 tiles setup.

I'd want to get a few games under my belt first, but I think it's definitely possible. You'd have to reinterpret the line colors though. In SWM there is difficult terrain (yellow markings), low objects (green markings) and pits (orange markings), in addition to the walls (pink markings) and doors (blue markings). So if you could agree on how to translate those things, I think it could work--particularly for larger battles, where it would be hard to maneuver on a small board.
However, part of the design of Skirmish mode play is that the map is small, which forces engagement. I remember that in most SWM matches there was no real combat until the third round or later, because it's too easy to hide and avoid engagement.
I realized most of the imperial assault models are upgraded copies from the wotc models. Luke, all heroes, Han, chewie and many others are in exactly in same pose.
Very similar poses, anyway. The Stormtroopers are almost exact copies. However, WotC's models were of the SW characters in their most iconic poses to start with, so it's not so much that FFG's models are copies of the WotC models...it's more that both FFG and WotC are trying to capture the (same) most iconic poses from the movies.
For instance, the moment I saw the Luke pose, I thought of the scene in Ep IV where Obiwan dies and then Luke yells, "NOO!" and goes on a shooting spree while the rest of his group is trying to escape on the Falcon. They've completely captured that scene, in just one model.
And the Vader pose...wow, love it! WotC had about 12 Vader minis, so it's hard not to have the FFG model be similar to at least one of them.
It's a great idea, but I'm holding off until the expansions release. I'm gonna need them ANYHOW considering the cards... and I'll deal with the tokens for the mean time.

JEALOUS! The only Han Solo figures I have are General Solo from the New Republic era and Han Solo on a Tauntaun. I don't think they'd fit the theme of this game.
The best thing for me with the WotC mini's is that they are already painted. I have 4 little kids so trying to paint mini's doesn't sound like a fun proposition.
I am happy i kept my Wotc miniatures. I am just wandering how i could use certain characters in skirmish if there is no deployment cards available yet, example Obiwan or Leia?

I think it's pretty safe to say that we'll be getting the Obi and Leia and R2-D2 and C3P0 minis at some point. But until then there's nothing stopping you from creating your own house-ruled Deployment Cards (and using the WotC minis), if you want to.

There are some fixes for that [there are always fixes].
You can increase the movement of the Imperial Assault figures by 50 percent.
For each accuracy rolled, make them count for two squares instead of one.
And so on and so forth.
