Newbie gate questions

By Red Room, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi all - I've managed to get a few games under my belt since buying Arkham Horror last month and am really, really enjoying it, although probably has one of the steepest learning curves I've ever encountered in my life. However I have a few probably stupidly easy to answer questions mainly related to gates.

1. Are you delayed when a nightgaunt drags you through a gate?

2. Can you use a 'find gate' spell immediately when you go through a gate? i.e. in the case above the arkham encounter specified a monster appears, which was a nightgaunt , I lost the check, it dragged me through, can I then use the find gate spell still in the arkham encounter phase to get me back through?

3. If there is a monster on the gate when you come out do you have to evade it? I'm fairly certain I read the answer is no but it does not move and waits there until the next round when you have to evade it then, right? I have too many 'this is the rule unless xxxxx happens' running round my head!

4. Unrelated to gates question - I'm sure this will have been answered many times in the past - has/will FFG ever do a professional print run of the Dark Pharaoh & Dunwich Horror heralds?

Thanks!

1. No, you're only delayed if a gate opens in your area.

2. Wow, I never thought about that. I guess it's not possible, since the Nightgaunt ends your movement.

3. Yes, there is a rule, you don't have to evade it. Not sure if you even can deal with the monster, if you want - I'd say no, because technically it's Other World movement (you started your movement in an Other World), and dealing with monsters takes place during Arkham movement.

4. I never heard of any specific plans, but I didn'd read the forums for some time, so I don't know ...

1. No. Since the movement phase is before Other World Encounters you just proceed with an encounter as if you had gone through the gate yourself.

2. I don´t think so. Afaik, the last thing in the movement phase is fighting monsters, so as soon as the combat ends, so does the phase.

3. Not in the round in which you return. You can however choose to engage it anyway.

The next round you have to evade/fight it in the movement phase as normal.

4. I wouldn´t count on it.

All the best

In this instance, no casting Find Gate as its casting time is listed on the card as "Movement" (or Movement Phase).

The debate is still on-going on the NG + Find Gate during the movement phase, i.e. move to a NG, fail to Evade, get tossed into a gate, cast FG and be ready to close/seal once your Arkham Encounter phase rolls around. Everyone is waiting for an official clarification on that.

"Once an investigator begins combat with a monster for
any reason, his movement is over. Regardless of whether
or not he wins the battle, the investigator loses the rest
of his movement points and must remain where he is."

That is straight from the Arkham Horror rulebook. When you begin combat with a monster regardless of the outcome you lose what you may have left of your movement points AND MUST REMAIN where you are. This rule obviously gets bent due to the special ability of failing a combat check against a Nightgaunt which draws you into the gate, but after that according to the rules you must remain where you are, in another world.

I am sure people could argue some interpretation that would allow you to immediately cast find gate but I don't think that is in the spirit of the game, or what the designer had in mind with that spell. Of course this is all just personal opinion and there is nothing wrong with you doing whatever you want with the rules, whatever lets you and your group have the most fun with the game go for it I say !

Cheers for all your answers, I completely missed that it the find gate spell was limited to the movement phase, it's the major problem I've find being a solo player - trying to keep track of everything that is going on is a massive headache. The one thing I keep forgetting when I'm trying to make decisions on 'clashing' information is always, always, always remember the phase order is gospel.

It's also in the rules that your turn ends ("No further encounters") when you lose a combat check. Normally, you would transfer to the Hospital or the Asylum and end your turn. The Nightgaunt is an exception to where you are transfered, but you still lost the Combat Check and, therefore, your turn ends.

Huh? Couldn't find anything by searching for the word "further". If you mean no further encounters when you go unconscious/insane, I'll agree with you. But losing a combat check = turn ends? You mean if say Michael McGlen goes to fight a Cultist at STL, fails his combat check (doesn't take damage because of his ability), kills the Cultist on the second combat check, he doesn't draw an Arkham Encounter during his AE phase sorpresa.gif ? Losing a combat check does not equal going to the Hospital or Asylum (unconscious/insane) automatically.

No, this happens when you're knocked unconscious or driven insane. Failing a combat check can result in losing Stamina, which can knock you unconscious and make you lose your turn.
