I have done this in the past: I found it worked best to cut vertically through the base, close to the foot, then slowly carve away the excess base stuck to the bottom of the foot.
Painting the toys
The sculpt cost between this game and GW isn't much of a comparison. Per fig you will pay more as each expansion has more content then just the figures.
nice minis! i really like the choice of brown for the bases.
What did you use for primer? With Reaper's Bones figures and a lot of board game pieces, you have to be careful about some sprays that won't adhere properly to the type of plastic, but I don't get the impression you used anything special, right?

I just used gw black and white undercoat spray and only light coats if your having problems getting undercoat to adhere try giving them a wash in warm soapy water to remove any lingering release agent from the moulding process. Watch out for bendy bits though as guns and sabers may wilt but you can set them back by dipping in hot water reshaping and dip in cold to set.
