I'm hoping the engineer or tech book includes rules for making PC created gear, ship, vehicle, and weapon designs. I could see this requiring a sig ability.
This is a brilliant idea! I was trying to distinguish Technician from Engineer, and just couldn't... It's actually a lot like real life. Technicians maintain and tweak the performance of something that exists. Engineers making a new thing from scratch to solve a problem.
How long would said item last? Being able to make an awesome new piece of gear is cool and all, but if you have a player making a new gadget every session, pretty soon he's going to wind up like Q from James Bond... Maybe you could make something that only lasts for the remainder of the session?
