Creating Custom Talent Trees

By Joker Two, in Game Masters

I'm currently working on a conversion of Edge to a different setting, including all-new Careers and Specializations. I've looked for a blank template of a talent tree that could be filled in, but to no avail. Even the organization chart options on Word won't allow for multiple connections between boxes.

However, as I'm nearing completion, I'd like to have something a little more appealing and useful than a gridded table. I'm not that familiar with formatting or editing software, but I have created a couple of pieces of art in Word to approximate the appearance of the "boxes" on the talent tree, and I'm attaching them in case anyone else finds this useful.

Each "box" consists of three parts; a header where the talent's title goes, a body section for the text, and a footer. DO NOT adjust the size of either the header or the footer, as it will distort the shape and you'll have a bunch of boxes with different proportions. Only adjust the body section to fit the length of the text. Use the matching lines to connect the boxes to form a tree.

Be careful when selecting art elements. There are a number of components to each, linked together via Word's "Group" feature to allow them to be moved together. If this is disabled they will be adjusted independently.

Feel free to use them in your own material.

Making a talent tree out of these components will be simple but time-intensive, as each element has to be positioned. If someone figures out a way to automate the scale (so that the whole box can be a single element that adjusts itself to the text inside WITHOUT distorting the proportions) please post it back on this thread for the rest of us.

EDIT: Ugh, how do you make attachments? The "copy from Word" option isn't preserving the art.

(If someone knows a better way to attach that, please let me know).

Note that ronix posted a link to a project he has on github where a program written in Java will generate those kinds of tables for you, based on input files you present.

That would be a lot cleaner than trying to create your own in Word.
