Palob Godalhi (spoiler alert if you didn´t like to read previews)

By Cununculus, in X-Wing

Palob Godalhi is another Scum pilot your foes would be wise to avoid. Whenever he can get within Range 1–2 of an enemy ship, he can steal an evade or focus token from it at the beginning of the Combat phase. (Quoted from the FFG preview page for Most Wanted, part 2, courtesy of FFG!)

Palob Godalhi combined with the Opportunist upgrade will be a nice combination.

Add either a Blaster Turret for which you use the stolen focus (or if got one from an action you also still have)

Or use it with the cheaper Autoblaster Turret for optimised effect.

Has anyone playtested anything from Most Wanted yet? Using a squadronbuilder for the cards, using rebel ships and dials for proxy Scum?

See here for the math:

http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/128417-mathwing-comprehensive-ship-jousting-values-and-more/

Summary: you can get his PS1 equivalent jousting efficiency above 100% with some upgrades (using a TIE Fighter as a reference point). And he has a turret. He's an extremely points efficient glass cannon that will shred your opponent, and can do this with a R1-2 turret. He is public enemy number one, expect him to draw more hate than Wedge or even generic naked Phantoms.

I was just looking at him yesterday.

Palob Godalhi — HWK-290 20

Bodyguard 2

Ion Cannon Turret 5

Outlaw Tech 2

Moldy Crow 3

Once a round, you can steal a focus token, Bodyguard let's you spend that token to make your friends harder to hit. Outlaw tec let's you get another focus if you go Red. Ion cannon to penalize anyone being dumb enough to let you in range.

Palob might be ealkng some dogs...

Thank you for your replies people!

I especially like that last build, it brings a bit of synergy to the selfish pilots and all.

(Though I have the tendency to look for synergy within any faction even though it mainly is a rebel thing to do, does that mean deep inside of me I am a Rebel no matter what? I have to change my Avatar! )

I'll finally have a use for the 100+ Focus Tokens I've amassed....

I'm not sure I'll be impressed by him. He is good on paper but I don't think he'll function well. The HWK is very fragile and has (IMO) the worst dial in the game. It's move will be predictable, and opponents will just target lock him instead. If he's got a blaster turret and nobody is giving out free focus, then he's just a really expensive inefficient, HWK.

He also doesn't really do anything against some of the most powerful ships out right now. Whisper will use gunner to fire volleys and get a focus off the hit anyway, Han and Dash both use re-rolls to push through damage and he won't win a shootout with a decimator.

Basically, his success relies more on your opponent playing poorly than you playing well. I think he'll be a fun, but woefully inconsistent choice in a list.

I am excited for Torkil Mux, however. He seems tailor-made to slug the current META in the gut. High PS is all the rage and a very common archetype is 50+ point, PS9+ ships with baseline PS support.

Well Torkil's PS 3 sits just atop the baseline PS ships (for the most part), and then drops that PS 9 all the way to the bottom. So he gets to ion a phantom while it's still at only 2 agility, and he lets your swarm dump fire on that wounded YT and finish it before it opens fire.

Han doesn't shoot first, not anymore.

And he's cheap. 24 points with an ion cannon. He'll severely disrupt ships that cost double what he does.

I think he'll be a fantastic buy.

Torkhil Mux is definately going to be fun too.

He and Palob have something anoying. With Palob Godalhi there are some possibilities for combinations and synergy as pointed out above by our fellow forum members :)

Dace Bonearm is nice, but, well..., he just that. It is a nice trait, but not as good as I think the other two can be.

Will try it out in a game though, he might surprise me ;)

Whether their being annoying is going to make Torkhil and Palob prima targets I don´t know. Depends on the other things you field and I do have the Impression many opponents leave the HWK for last as if a ´support´ ship can´t harm you that much.

Fatal mistake sometimes

I filmed a battle report last night with the Scarlet Thief list I described in the video link above. It will take some time before I can post it, but I continue to enjoy the list.

Palob is great for a few reasons: his ability is great and he is a huge heat score. The opponent wants to shoot him, which means they will suffer some other ship to live a little longer. In my case last night, it gave Kath the time she needed to get into position. 5 dice with target lock and focus at range 2-3 is going to leave a mark.

I played a small game the other day using
Palob + Blaster Turret + Moldy Crow + Greedo + Predator + Hot Shot Blaster
Kavil + Ion Turret + Unhinged Astromech + Determination + Bomb Loadout + Seismic Charge (bwowwm)

against

Rexlar Brath + Ion Cannon + Outmaneuver

Turr Phennir

Scum tore the TIEs up, even without using the bomb, Hot Shot (in case I had to use my focus on defense), or Determination. Turr went down pretty quickly as Greedo tossed a crit on him and the TIEs took Palob down to 2 Hull. The last turn of the game saw the Y-Wing get ionized near the edge of the board and the Defender, after being ioned several times, took its last hit. If the Defender had survived, Kavil would have "left the building" at full health (oops). I can't wait to get that Most Wanted pack, when it gets back from its cruise....

I've playtested him 3 times on Vassal with this loadout:

Blaster T + Opportunist + K4 Droid + Moldy Crow

MJ's comment about Public Enemy Number One is spot on. In the first two games I shot with him once before he went down in flames. In the third game I used a strategy of keeping him back, letting his wingmen take the brunt of my opponent's fire, but then he is no help at greater than range 2 like the Rebel HWKs can be.

Because of the range 1-2 restriction for his ability and the Blaster T, he wants to be close to the action...but he dies quickly in the thick of things. He needs some form of protection.

A larger threat may be a good addition. Boba Fett has been very effective for me in other Scum lists. Pairing these two could be a step in the right direction.

Adding an Engine Upgrade may be an option for added maneuverability and the ability to arc dodge. However, he is becoming a point sink quickly though.

Finally, pairing him with Torkil to tag and drop a higher PS threat to Polab could be an interesting option that I would like to test.

Ion turret and engine upgrade. Why bother with anything else?

I was thinking about him with Lone Wolf. LW only allows you to reroll blanks, so it pairs well with those focus tokens and aids his survival. It greatly reduces the number of blanks he sees on defense, keeping him alive longer.

I only have two opportunists cards, why do you make this to me FFG ?

How much value would Palob add without any other upgrades? Or with just Lone Wolf? He'd have next to no offensive value, but it would lower his target priority, and allow him to strip tokens longer, which sets up attacks from his squad.

Also, how would he interact against Pilot Kyle, Ysanne or a mirror match? All resolve at the start of the Combat phase, so would initiative play a factor?
