Col Jendon Errata - Was It Necessary?

By TheLoneDeranger, in X-Wing

I never understood reasoning for Colonel Jendon's pilot ability being errated to only work with ships that don't have target lock. He just seems so lackluster now. He didn't even seem that great before the errata. He wasn't bad, but he was no Biggs or Howlrunner or Soontir Fel, just a solid ship with a fun ability. Was he so dominate with bombers or something that they had to tone him down? I don't remember anyone ever complaining that he was too powerful.

There are now only three ships he can even use his ability with: Tie Fighters, Interceptors, and Phantoms. Tie fighters with a target lock seems lackluster, and nearly pointless if you're running Howlrunner. The strength of Phantoms and Interceptors lies in their extreme maneuverability so flying those within range 1 of a lumbering shuttle seems silly. I guess you could give those ships a one time boost and then send them on their way, but is it worth spending all those points on the shuttle just for that; especially when Interceptors and Phantoms already cost a lot of points? Why not just slap a Targeting Computer on an Interceptor for 2 points instead? Also, Buzzsaw Whisper is way more brutal and efficient.

Colonel Jendon was made for Bombers. My question is if Jendon plus Bombers wasn't ever dominating the tournament scene then why was he ever nerfed in the first place? It just takes away from the variety of the game. If it isn't stomping all the Falcon, Phantom, and Swarm lists then why cut that option out of the game? Actually it might even be a decent contender verses the ubiquitous Fat Han lists that people are growing tired of, probably not, but if someone wants to play it why not allow it?

That isn't what they did. He can give a blue target lock to any ship, including a ship that doesn't already have the TL action.

There was a question when he came out if he could give the blue TL token to a ship that doesn't have the TL action and they clarified that it works for any ship.

That (what VanorDM said) is why Jendon isn't in the Errata but a few sections down in the clarifications.

Oh, and for full disclosure, first time I read that I misinterpreted it as well. So now I pay much more attention to section titles than I used to. :P.

A LOT of people seem to make that mistake when reading that bit.

I didn't think it was confusing before, but the 'clarification' seems to have seriously confused the matter for some people.

As others have said above, it states that he can give a target lock to any ship, including those who cannot normally take a target lock. It did not nerf him at all, it just reinforced what we already knew, and what was already consensus anyway.

What Jendon + bombers does REALLY effectively is give IMPS the ability to take down epic ships with brutal efficiency.

In this match-up I'd lay my money on the shuttle and bombers any day of the week. Plus imps have an additional 13 points towards escorts.

This is good news! It's like getting a new ship to play with! I used to use him all the time in epic games until I read the faq. Everyone at my game store has been using Jendon (or not using him) with the understanding that it can't be used with ships with target lock. The way it's worded in the faq is so specific that it sounds like it can only be used on ships without target lock. It should just say: Colonel Jendon can pass out target locks to ships whether or not the chosen ship as target lock in it's action bar.

Ehh the wording is just fine the way it is. It says "may" which we know means it is not required. It doesn't not say "must" or "only ships without the TL action". It is also in a section of clarifications to rules - nothing else in that section overwrites what is listed on the card......

I still don't see how people keep getting confused about this...

Neither do I. The ability is very straightforward. All the assorted FAQ entries about it seem to have done is confuse the issue.

Because original text is quite clear IMO, yet there is a "clarification", you start to wonder what I got wrong originally.

Clarification should read "...lock tokens also to a ship that..."

"Colonel Jendon may assign 1 of his blue target lock tokens to a ship that does not have the target lock action listed in its action bar."

In any game I've ever played, "may" means its an option, but not mandatory(as opposed to must).

Well, i can jumpo in here as well since i read it wrong the first time too...

It is the may that mostly confuses ppl which native language is not english... (like mine)

Of course it seems still to confuse ppl who are native english speaking ppl so i did not feel like a dork anymore as someone explained that to me.

I hate MAY.... its a month and not a word that allowes me to do stuff... ah well... maybe i will be fine(d) .... grml :)
