Thinking of continuing to play in tournaments

By chilligan, in X-Wing

I'm tired of negative posts. I am seriously thinking of carrying on with playing tournaments and enjoying the game. Don't try to stop me!

  • I love the tournament scene and the game.
  • I love the fact that I go to tournaments in different cities and still find my nemesis, that same guy I always get to play in the top brackets. We're 2-3, I'm going to get you next time, buddy!
  • I love the fact that I meet many people interested in the game with crazy build ideas, even if they don't always work (I'm looking at you, guys that haven't read the Biggs Epic FAQ)
  • I love the prizes. I am not going to be a hypocrite. Winning prizes is part of the incentive, and I like what FFG has done with prizes: instantly recognizable tokens for bragging rights, with high-quality and utility added on top (you're not going to take a medal/trophy to a tournament, but you will take your Worlds Champion templates if you have them XD )
  • I love playing competitively. People play with a different mindset than in casual play, and I'm actually not talking about lists! You really have to bring your A game, so you think about every possibility turns in advance! It takes me 1h30 to finish a Vassal game, I had one last night in a tournament that lasted 3hours! I was in a trance all game, didn't see anything happening around me. It felt like playing chess, though I wouldn't exactly know since I don't play chess beyond the basics.
  • I love the fact that you can't just bring any list, just how in Starcraft you can't just make any units to win. You have to give yourself a fighting chance for every possible matchup, or at least play to your strengths.
  • I love preparing for specific matchups, running scripts to check my chances in a scenario, etc.
  • I love throwing dice. I love that feeling when you barely get that Han Solo that was running away, from range 3 through an asteroid.
  • I don't like time limits, but hey! You can't have everything, right? Especially when Han survives with 1HP, and didn't take any damage in the last round from 2-3 Ties with focus... but that happens!

(T he following post is satire and not meant to insult the wonderful X-wing community or FFG)

  • I love obese neckbeards making the same 3 Star Wars jokes during every match(STAY ON TARGET!)
  • I love facing Fat Han lists 6 times in a row
  • I love arguing over .0001 of an inch on the same ship my opponent "accidently" knocked over 3 times
  • I love people that call me Lando because I'm the only black guy they know(ok, that part I actually enjoy)

Maybe they say that because you're extra smooth with the ladies?

Wow, only one satirical reply. I guess I'm the only one that likes participating in tournaments? I guess you'd rather whine about OP turrets...

Still trying to get enough people for casual play. :/. Would love to do some campaign ruckus on the side of some super competitive awesome tournaments.

I sympathize. Right now I'm in the Netherlands, where I have a tournament a week within 100km, I don't even go to all of them. Once I return to Romania, I'll have to see if I can foster a larger player base. Not that rests solely on my shoulders of course, but maybe I can help.

Sigh. So far it seems like I'm the most enthusiastic about this game. It's made me really tired.

I agree that it can be difficult. It requires a lot of effort. Do you have support of a FLGS? Have you tried demonstration nights? Even playing in a visible spot is a good strategy. We've been playing each Thursday night in Amsterdam in a cafe, people come over and ask about the game, some take it up. We've started with 4 people in September, now we get about 8-10 people each Thursday.

I love playing in tournaments because I see builds I would not see otherwise.

I love playing in tournaments because even though it is a "tournament," we still play casual.

I love playing in tournaments because even if my build gets absolutely trashed, we have a good time and I love the discussions about how to improve my game.

I too have an issue with the timeframe. I hate the 1-hour timeframe because it is too long and you can only squeeze in so much in a game night. I hate the 1-hour timeframe because it is too short and some of my lists can't kill enough in that time window.

I too love tournaments.

  • Agonsing over which list to bring, to fight the perceived meta
  • Making jokes and being a fun guy to play
  • Bringing my A game
  • Having brain farts and doing something stupid (like barrel rolling Turr off the table in the first round on the top table in my final game, but still finishing second in the tournament).
  • Playing 4-6 games in a row vs lists and people I've never met, and learning new tactics and ideas
  • Making new friends and enemies
  • Heading down with friends and hoping not to play against them as they often beat you
  • Beating your friends who often beat you, and it counting for something because its a tournament!
  • Flying casual, reminding my opponents to take their actions, or which of my ships doesn't have a focus when they agonise over who to shoot
  • Then rolling 3 natural evades when they targeted a ship without focus
  • Winning a tournament after having only 4 hours sleep and a coffee and an energy drink, while being equal parts of shattered and hyper.

I've had great games and terrible games at tournaments, I've also had great games and terrible games playing casually. I've taken part in around 10 tournaments so far, and had awesome fun in all of them.

I've only met 1 person I wouldn't willingly play again, and I've learnt so much from all of them. I've generally finished middle of the pack apart from finishing second once and first in my last one.

I'll bite.

It's a dumb thread. Yeah, okay it's kind of funny, and it's nice to see people *not* complaining about the game, but it comes across as such a snarky, backhanded sort of optimism, I couldn't feel anything other than a resounding 'meh'.

I'm enjoying the tournaments I go to as much as you, I just don't feel the need to tell everyone about it, satirically or otherwise.

Except now, because I wouldn't be allowed on the internet if I wasn't a little bit hypocritical.

There must be a great lack of Falcons in your casual scene.

I did't mean to come off as snarky, I actually enjoy the things I mentioned.

I know it's not a great thread, but I was trying to offset the overwhelming negativity from the balance discussions.

Were you around for the great "Lets be more inclusive ... " rubbish of a couple of months ago?

Even the first one was ahh... misguided ... to begin with, but then the 'satirical' ones started. It was a pretty dark time for this forum.

This thread, playing off another thread, had a very similar feel to it.

Don't let me stop you being positive, you're very right in trying to counter negativity in the discussions because it does get really, really tiresome. Perhaps avoid picking out certain threads or users if possible. The last thing we need is a Casual vs Competitive flame war.

Yeah I was here. The first was a troll, the rest of the satirical. Perhaps the first one of the satiricals gave me a good chuckle, the others were too much.

I did purposefully name the thread as a reference, to make it an obvious counter, because I have been avoiding posting in certain threads with premises I don't agree with.

I have no intention of starting any Casual vs Competitive flame war, my like for tournaments does not equate disdain for the Casual setting. I like casual play. I actually keep these settings fairly separate, I use Casual to try crazy build ideas.
